Ellen Page may sue Sony over nudity in game

This is the dumbest thing I've seen in awhile. It's not real. I thought she was smarter than this.

Actress Ellen Page is reportedly considering a lawsuit against Sony, it was revealed yesterday. The move comes in response to news that the company may have allowed realistic nude depictions of her body to be included in the recently released video game Beyond: Two Souls.

The diminutive actress, best known for her role as the title character in 2007 indie-hit Juno, provides the voice and likeness for the video game's star character. In the game's shower scene, players have discovered that a special "free camera" mode can be used on developer version of the game to manipulate the angle and view a fully nude depiction of Page's body.

Photos of the cartoonish scene were quickly posted to online communities like Reddit and spread around from there. A full video of the shower scene, without the "glitch" of graphic nudity, has also been posted online.

The actress is well known for having a strict no nudity policy in any movies she appears in, making the "digital nudity" a particularly sticky issue for Sony.

"The images are from an illegally hacked console and [are] very damaging for Ellen Page," read a Sony statement shared with CinemaBlend.com. "It's not actually her body. I would really appreciate if you can take the story down to end the cycle of discussion around this."

Since they used her likeness, I think it certainly merits a discussion.

She modeled for the game and did the voice, but it's not her. That's like suing for a cartoon showing nudity. It's not you, and it's not real.

Beyond used mo-cap for her movements/likeness, right? Cause if that's the case, that's where the line starts getting a bit blurry, because it's her likeness, her movements, vocalizations, etc.

Any game can be hacked, and any character model can be seen from any angle. This is an incredibly common thing.

The thing is, they made full nude detail for her body. Generally video game character models that aren't actually meant to show nudity are modeled like Barbie dolls specifically because of things like this. So either there was going to be nudity in the game at some point in the development process and they left it in, or they gave her realistic naughty bits just for the heck of it, knowing full well that the game was hackable and the model would be uncovered at some point.

Either they're stupid or they left it in because they knew it'd make controversy. I don't know that it justifies a lawsuit, but it does make whoever left in the detail a total dick.

It's a difficult one to call - she did mo-cap, but obviously not in the nude. The naked depiction will be a projection on the part of the game artists. So theoretically it won't be an exact likeness of Page being naked. That being said, if Page was unaware that this scene would be included and she has a no-nudity clause (which obviously purports her feelings of being seen in such a way), then that would definitely be problematic. Especially as the logical thought train is "Ellen Page gave her likeness to Character X - Character X is shown nude in this game - Ellen Page must have been on board with this".

It's clear that Sony has frayed nerves about this:

Most programs that create the human body will generate, at their core, a nude image. They are programmed to be anatomically correct because they are used by artists and need to be accurate, and that is what the body looks like. After that, further layers like hair and clothes are added. Most games have relatively few opportunities for hackers to do whatever these guys are doing (Oblivion was a pretty huge exception to this), but the mere fact that deep down in the code the character has boobies is not unusual in the slightest.

The fact that they included these camera angles, however, is not nothing.

It's a developer version of the game. It's essentially a debug mode, all of which inherently have free cameras, because they kind of have to. None of it can be viewed in the retail game, nor was it intended to be, so it's all quite silly.
