A Monster Calls - Just heartwrenching. Loved it.

I've been meaning to see that, in part because the same director is helming the next Jurassic Park movie. Speaking of which:

The Impossible: Wow. That was a really damn good movie that I never ever want to see again. Bodes well for Fallen Kingdom and I'll bet the lead child actor will go places someday.

Hot Girls Wanted: honestly, some porno docs are amazing experiences of sleaze and/or tragedy on a level so human it's almost unbearable. Stuff like Catching the Muse, The Girl Next Door and the Serbian one I saw are powerful films. This is fucking terrible. Not a single person is likeable. Hard to give a shit about these girls as they are some of the most annoying people on the planet. I have to think that they failed in almost every aspect of what makes a good doc.

Money Pit: admittedly very low on the scale of quality Tom Hanks 80s comedies but it has its moments, especially a Buster Keaton-sequel set piece of physical comedy that is sheer perfection. Never been a huge fan of Shelley Long and while I didn't like her character very much, she acts the hell out of this movie.

The Simpsons Movie: this is clearly the year's first rewatch.

Less Than Zero: Robert Downey Jr. is great in this. Otherwise, this was much ado about nothing. The brutality of rich white kids getting into hard drugs has diminishing returns when that's all the movie's about. The characters, despite their solid actors, are all archetypes, so there wasn't much to hang onto for me.

Batman and Robin: Is it bad? Yes. It is enjoyable to watch? oh, fuck yes!

The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe: The 0s animated version. The voice acting is hammy but still, it's alright for what it is.

Clue: One of my favorite movies of all time. Still funny, still quotable, and just has some awesome direction.

Castle in the Sky: While it's not the best Studio Ghibli film, it is probably the best one to just throw on casually.

10 Things I Hate About You: What really strikes me about this film is how it can be subversively weird at times. It's part of the charm that elevates it above most other teen movies of its time.

Yeah, Batman and Robin is out of style to completely hate now, because it's harmless. At the time, sure, you didn't want people thinking that Batman was as corny and stupid as that film in a way similar to the 60s show. But now that he's in no danger of audiences thinking that, it's a fun movie to laugh at. I personally never hated it myself, and find things to enjoy with all four original Batman movies.

Seriously. It's not like I don't listen back to the Dark Knight Discussion we did on this, and I maintain it was the worst film of that series, but it wasn't nearly the carcinogenic atrocity that we perhaps made it out to be.

From my ongoing project there are *at least* 10 comic book movies that are worse than Batman & Robin in terms of concept and/or execution.

It's the same thing as Phantom Menace. Shitting on Batman and Robin is something a handful of people still do because they either think it's still funny, or because they need validation from other internet rocket scientists who haven't seen a bad movie in two decades somehow. It's easy, it's lazy, and it stopped being remotely relevant twenty years ago.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skulls: I'm convinced this movie is undeserving of the shit it's had heaped on it. It's pretty faithful in tone to the rest of the films, but the difference is twofold: 1. The acting: Jesus Christ, doesn't ANYBODY care about their performance in this movie? Actually, Lebeouf [sic] isn't bad. But no one goes to an Indiana Jones movie for the acting. Everything would be fine if 2. The fucking CGI didn't look piss poor. Seriously, fucking Spielberg directed Jurassic Park the better part of 30 years ago and it looks way better with a much smaller budget (not firm, but I'd definitely bet on it). He should be fucking ashamed at how shit this movie looks. If the effects were decent (including the wig they put on Ford's stunt doubles) this movie wouldn't be much different form the others in the series.

The Day After Tomorrow: good lord. This film deserves all the shit it gets. Preposterous. Terribly-acted. Mind-numbingly addicted to ripping off its betters (its betters include DEEP IMPACT, the only film I've ever walked out of the theatre on).

Also, British television is addicted to shitty American movies.

I rewatched Being John Malkovich last night and I had clearly forgotten just how amazing it is.

Watch Adaptation. They're heavily interwoven, it's a fictionalized autobiography of the writer during the making of that film. I pushed it before during Nick Cage month. One of my favourites.

Shit I watched on the plane back from Europe:

Colossal: holy fuck, this was good. Like, maybe my favourite movie of the year, good.

John Wick: kind of regretted not watching this on the way over when I watched Fist Fight instead. Though, I wanted to watch both it and the sequel on the way over. The way back didn't have the sequel, but now I REALLY want to see it. The hype is most certainly lived up to. I fucking loved this. Just complete mayhem all the way through.

Maps to the Stars: new Cronenberg is my third favourite Cronenberg out of all three Cronenberg's but this was pretty spectacular. Everyone was amazing in it, especially Julianne Moore. Goddamn, she's great. The threesome and then naked dude trying to get his dick hard again scene is a little rough to watch on a plane though. But I made it through. Don't worry.

Rogue One (A Star Wars Story): I slept on this coming out in the theaters. Initially I really wasn't interested because Felicity Jones looked boring AF in it, but it got such positive reviews (and I heard what they did with Cushing and Fisher's likenesses) that I meant to check it out. Finally saw it on Netflix last night. It's pretty good. Easily the most intense SW movie (guess I'll break down and say "it's the darkest"), but what I really loved was the visuals. This has to be the most gorgeously shot SW movie since the original trilogy. It's incredibly directed, and various shots of the ships in the planet's orbit and some of the interiors really kept me engaged. I didn't realize until watching that Krennic was Daggett from Dark Knight Rises.

In terms of cons Felicity Jones is still bland as she looked to be in the trailer. All of the other characters are cool and different and likable, but my biggest hang up was how Forrest Whitaker was a glorified cameo. His acting was so fun and weird and different and there was such an imprinted big-dealness to his character, but I never fully understood what he was about, nor did I feel the way the film wanted me to when he exited the story. Looking it up, I understand that he originated from one of the cartoons, so I guess his brief appearance was biting off that. Still, wish he was in it more.

But this was still a solid viewing experience. I loved the retro look all the villains had, and Darth Vader's appearance was just as ill as I heard.
