Mr. Keith
What's everyones take on their games? I never could get into it that much, but several people I've known loved it and gametrailers has really bragged about the series. Anyone else love it? Missy
Contra was one of the hardest games from that era. You really needed the Konami / Contra Code to have any real chance. Despite the difficulty level, it was hugely fun, especially if you played co-op.
JackFetch
I remember playing it, but I didn't own it. I was too busy playing Legend of Zelda.
Guest
The original Contra pretty much set the stage for two player co-op in the console era, and was legitimately a difficult game even with the code. The best game in the series, however, was the Genesis iteration titled Contra: Hard Corps. Pretty much every version since then has sucked a big one, and they really need to stop trying to bring it back.
drqshadow
Yeah, I don't know that I could word it any better than D.W. just did. Although I never played Hard Corps, I agree it peaked in that era. The SNES chapter would've been perfect without the terrible overhead stages. Kscriv
I still have Contra on the NES back at my parents' place (can get to level 5 without the code) and have played Hard Corps (though not in forever) and I loved it, I still want to pick up Super C and Contra III on Virtual Console. Mr. Keith
I only have Super C for the NES and I can just get to the third stage final boss. After that, I keep getting killed and sent right back to the beginning of the stage/game if I have no more continues. Does the Konami Code work for that game, cause I swear I heard somewhere that it doesn't.
Guest
It's a different code, and it only grants you 10 lives instead of 30. It's right, left, down, up, A, B, start at the title screen.
Chops
I agree with everything that's been said in this thread. Contra was a great game that has gone downhill since the PS1.
Aaron Robinson
I heard the new DS entry was surprisingly good.
Missy
If you trust IGN, they gave it an 8.0 / 10.

Missy
How did I know you'd be first to respond to that?
Guest
Because I have no life. And I'm here to spread truthiness.
Aaron Robinson
Honestly, most of the praise I’ve seen is from other people on message boards. I tend to stay away from sites like IGN and Gamespot.
Guest
I played a demo of it a while ago. The game is okay (mainly cause it's 2D), but it's just not really needed.
SinisterRabbit
Contra 4 is fun if you are a) a masochist b) an old school 2d shoot 'em up fan The game loves the fact that it is incredibly hard, and in fact mocks you if you choose to play on the easy level. There are 9 levels to the game and each time I make my way to the next I swear that it is impossible. Memorization is the key to success, and you will have to play each level probably a dozen times before you figure it all out. Get hit once and you lose a life, you only get 5 continues, but if you stop and save the game they take a continue away from you. Oh, and the Contra code is not included. I have heard that if you complete the game you can unlock the original Contra and, I believe, Super C. I love it, if for no other reason than it feels like I have gone back in time to when games were really hard.
Mister R
I just downloaded Contra III: The Alien Wars from the Virtual Console service. I've never played a Contra game before, but I've heard about them. And so far, despite dying a lot, I'm enjoying it. I'm on the Second Stage, which is an over head one. And that type of thing hasn't aged very well.
