JackFetch Posted April 9, 2009 Report Share Posted April 9, 2009 Sony is officially moving forward with its Spider-Man spinoff movie focusing on Venom and has hired Zombieland writing team Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese to pen the script, the writers told a group of reporters. "We had a really great relationship with Sony on [Zombieland], and so that was a nice in for us there," Reese said in a group interview. "It gave us a leg up." The duo is already working on the script, but they are sworn to secrecy on the details. "We're under strict orders on Venom," Wernick said. "We can't talk about it. It's just super secret." Unlike Spider-Man director Sam Raimi, who has admitted that he wasn't a Venom fan before directing Spider-Man 3, Wernick and Reese said they are big fans of the comic character and have recently been doing their research to ensure that they do justice to him. "We read [Venom] growing up, but we were not experts," Reese said. "We certainly know the mythology of Venom, but went back and learned more when it became clear that we could actually get this job." Ultimately, the writing team has fan interest at heart, they said. Even as they are just getting started on the script, they admit fan scrutiny is on their minds. "Absolutely, I'm terrified," Reese said with a nervous laugh. "It's source material that everybody knows and everybody's familiar with and everybody loves. There's a burden on you to meet the expectations of people. Is he supposed to be an anti-hero now? I really like the way they have Mac Gargan as Venom and Eddie Brock as the "reformed" Anti-Venom in the comics, but this film is supposed to make Brock a "sympathetic character." JackFetch Posted April 10, 2009 Author Report Share Posted April 10, 2009 A few weeks back, ComingSoon.net/Superhero Hype! had the privilege of visiting the set of Sony's upcoming horror comedy Zombieland, starring Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin. While we can't talk just yet about what we saw, we did get to spend a good 45 minutes with the film's co-writers and executive producers, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, both cool guys who are clearly fans of genre. With that in mind, it was exciting to know they were working on the first draft for Sony's planned "Spider-Man" spin-off movie Venom, and we had to try to get in a few questions about that. The duo actually went to Sony with a pitch for their take for the popular Spidey villain, but couldn't really say too much about it due to the usual non-disclosure agreements anyone involved with such a high profile project for Marvel would probably have to sign. "Venom is something that we're very fired up to be writing," Reese told us. "We have turned in a draft and are waiting to hear back, so it's early in the process. But it's a thrill to be writing 'Venom' for obvious reasons." As far as what Marvel is looking for, Reese did say that they had to follow "certain parameters" or the "47 rules" as Wernick called them. "Obviously, with a character like Venom there's a ton of stuff to draw from," Reese told us. "Then they had specific rules about the villain and the backstory and stuff like that, so there were certain things they wanted us... certain parameters they gave us. But largely we pitched them something and they liked it but they had changes, so we worked on the outline for a long time and then we wrote the script. So with Marvel and Sony and us it's definitely very, very collaborative." No, it wasn't Batman and Robin, but suffice it to say fans weren't particularly happy, especially with the treatment of fan fave and longtime Spidey arch-nemesis Venom. Now Sony is going forward with a Venom spinoff movie, which pretty much has fans split down the middle. Will it finally do the fanged black-ooze baddie justice, or will it be more of the same? The good news is that Zombieland co-writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick have been tasked with penning the project (Zombieland is awesome, so fingers crossed). Today Wernick confirmed to us that the project is still moving forward and the writing team has turned the script in to the suits at Sony. "We've written two drafts of Venom, and the studio has it, and they're pushing forward in whatever ways they push forward," Wernick told SCI FI Wire in an exclusive interview. So when might Venom be going into production? "We're not sure, [but] we've turned in our two drafts," said Wernick. One big question has been whether a Venom movie might happen even before Spider-Man 4, but that now appears unlikely. The latest rumors have Spidey 4 shooting in early 2010. When asked about the relationship between the two movies, Wernick was tight-lipped. There have been other symbiotes: * Scream (worn by Donna Diego) A life foundation symbiote * Toxin (worn by Patrick Mulligan) Spawn of Carnage * The Life Foundation symbiotes worn by Carl Mach, Trevor Cole, Ramon Hernandez (aka Lasher) and Leslie Gesneria. * Hybrid (worn by Scott Washington) 4 of the life foundation symbiotes merged to form Hybrid. He is the first good symbiote. * She-Venom II (worn by Communications Specialist Patricia Robertson.) Clone of the Venom symbiote. * Krobaa in "Venom: Seed of Darkness" Minus 1, a younger Eddie Brock fights a man wearing a symbiote calling himself Krobaa, whom Eddie defeats using the flash on his camera. * Dreadface (worn at times by Thing, Human Torch, and Psi-Lord ) was an alien symbiote of the same race as the Venom symbiote that appeared in two issues of the Fantastic Four volume one. It was imprisoned upon the warship of Devos the Destroyer and accidentally set free by the Fantastic Four when they crash-landed the ship on a remote island. While Reed and Sue take off in a jet to find help, Ben and Johnny are attacked by Dreadface. Ben sets off an explosion, destroying the symbiote. Of interest is the fact that while Dreadface showed a weakness to Johny's flames, when he had taken Johny as a host he gained the Torch's immunity to his own fire. This appeared to occur due to Dreadface pulling the symbiote back from the parts of Torch's body that were aflame, while retaining control over his mind. Dreadface's appearance is very similar to that of Venom's incarnation in the year 2099, though lacking the spider symbol and the monstrous tongue. * Anti-Venom - Created and worn by Eddie Brock after the remnants of the Venom symbiote in his blood bonded with his white blood cells. * Payback - Bonded to a more evolved cousin of normal race of symbiotes. Is currently a vigilante and head of the True Believers. * An as of yet unnamed symbiote is part of Vulcan's team of convicts sent to track down the Starjammers in X-Men: Kingbreaker. * The clone of Spider-Girl in the MC2 universe named April Parker is a hybrid symbiote/human. JackFetch Posted March 7, 2012 Author Report Share Posted March 7, 2012 Looks like it's back: In a somewhat surprising turn of events, The LA Times is reporting that Chronicle director Josh Trank is in talks to direct Venom, a feature film based on the "Spider-Man" character. First appearing in the comic book series as an alien costume worn by Spider-Man in "The Amazing Spider-Man" #252 in 1984, it was several years before the creature left Peter Parker and merged with photographer Eddie Brock, forming the antihero known as Venom. Since then, the character has appeared in a variety of different forms and bonded with several different hosts. In the "Ultimate" Marvel Universe, the suit has a more terrestrial origin, created by Parker and Brock's scientist parents in an attempt to cure cancer. Venom has appeared on the big screen before in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 3, played by Topher Grace. It is unlikely that the proposed film will bear any connection to that take on the character, though it remains to be seen if the project will connect in any form to July 3rd's The Amazing Spider-Man. Sony has allegedly toyed with the idea of a Venom spinoff in the past, but this new version is rumored to be unconnected to previous drafts.
