dc20willsave
Playtone Setting Neil Gaiman's 'American Gods' For HBO Series EXCLUSIVE: As HBO prepares to unveil its epic-sized series adaptation of George RR Martin's Game of Thrones this Sunday, the payweb has begun talks to acquire the Neil Gaiman novel American Gods to be developed into another fantasy series. The project was brought to HBO by Playtone partners Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman, and it was brought to them by Robert Richardson. The plan is for Richardson and Gaiman to write the pilot together. Richardson is the renowned cinematographer who just completed Hugo Cabret and whose recent credits include Shutter Island, Inglourious Basterds and Kill Bill. He is a regular collaborator with directors that include Martin Scorsese, Quentin Tarantino and Oliver Stone and has won Oscars for The Aviator and JFK. It is his first significant scripting effort. He'll do it in collaboration with Gaiman, a fanboy god for works like The Sandman, whose script work includes Beowulf. His novels Stardust and Coraline have been turned into films, and Neil Jordan is directing an adaption of Gaiman's The Graveyard Book. American Gods, the 2002 book that won both the Stoker and Hugo Award among other prizes, lays out a battle between two sets of gods. One consists of the traditional gods and mythological creatures who got their power because people throughout history believed in them. They are losing steam as people's beliefs wane and are in danger of being supplanted by a new set of gods who reflect America's preoccupation with technological advancements and obsessions with media, celebrity, technology and drugs. The protagonist is an ex-con who becomes the traveling partner of a conman who turns out to be one of the older gods trying to recruit troops to battle the upstart deities. Playtone just completed its run of the HBO series Big Love, and generated the miniseries The Pacific, John Adams, Band of Brothers and From The Earth To The Moon for the network. Source. So, outside of a Tardis showing up outside right now, this could be the best Birthday present the universe has ever given me.
Molly
FUCK. YES. All I have to do is loose eighty pounds, get cast as Shadow and this would be perfect.
dc20willsave
The show is apparently set to be ready by 2013 and run six seasons of ten to twelve episodes a piece.
JasonC
So, outside of a Tardis showing up outside right now, this could be the best Birthday present the universe has ever given me. If they announce any news on the Good Omens Project - such as a cast list or a filming date - that would cover Christmas as well...
dc20willsave
From Gaiman's Twitter: neilhimself Neil Gaiman And for those asking, No, 6 years of AMERICAN GODS on TV doesn't mean just the 1st book. It means I need to write the 2nd now, for a start.
Venneh
A fun little casting suggestion thing that Gaiman linked to, spoilers if you haven't read the book Yeah, I kind of disagree with most of those, especially their choice for Nancy. I could get behind their choices for Shadow, Czernobog, Laura, and Jacquel, though.
Dread
I'm excited for a second book. Good cast listing too. AG is the only thing fiction-wise of Gaiman's I like.

Venneh
I still think the cast that I came up with Preston while drunk is the superior cast, I'll probably post it one of these days.
Molly
Morgan Freeman would be terrible as Mr. Nancy. They should just wait until LeVar Burton is old enough.
Venneh
Okay, the cast we came up with and what reasoning I could find. Jeff Bridges as Wednesday, because Jeff Bridges Hendricks as Eoster, for reasons I should not have to explain here Portman as Laura, because is pretty enough to pull off what will happen later in the books Javier Bardem as Jacquel (would also take Idris Elba) Lawrence Fishburn as Ibis Mickey Rourke as Mad Sweeney or Low Key, cause could pull off the convict aspect Hailee Steinfeld as Sam Black Crow (assuming a few years for her to hit late teens), or Ellen Page Peter Stormare as Czernobog, see: Fargo Jeffery Dean Morgan or Tom Hardy as Shadow Gene Wilder as Hinzelmann, cause can pull of sweet old man and other things that hte character requires Alan Tudyk as Mulligan Morena Baccarain as Bilquis

Dread
Not just a different channel, one is a major network, the other is a premium pay channel known for doing only the best thing that have ever been on television ever. So...yeah, totally related. Based on, mind you, a pilot for a completely different show you watched after you stole it?

Dread
And this gives you insight into American Gods how? There is literally NO connection other than the fact that Gaiman used to write comic books and Constantine is based on a comic book.
JasonC
It doesn't. It is simply me going into my default Pessimist Mode again. I am managing to stay positive about Guardians of The Galaxy but its an effort.
