I could have guessed about half of Mike's.

Any reasoning for the groups, Tom?

Honestly, it was just to keep the numbers straight and I forgot to remove the gaps.

Sod it, I've missed half a dozen things off this list in my haste. No Radiohead? No Clint Mansell? (Good calls Ian and Koete)

Switch out Hope of the States, Feeder and British Sea Power for Radiohead's The Bends and OK Computer. Then throw in Mansell's Fountain. I'd switch out the Cardigans for Radiohead's Hail to the Thief but it's a sentimental favourite and I'm already overstocked with Radiohead. It's already killing me not to have any Dire Straits, REM, White Stripes, Pixies, Blur, Muse, Darkness, Aimee Mann, or B*Witched in there.

In no order:

Alestorm -- Captain Morgan's Revenge

61DZYoKugvL._SL500_AA300_.jpg

Pirate Metal, just a band and an album that kick inordinate amounts of ass. Favorite tracks:"Over The Seas" "Wenches and Mead"

Flogging Molly -- Within a Mile of Home

flogging_molly-within_a_mile_of_home.jpg

Probably my favorite band of all time. Dave King is an incredible vocalist. This album tends to lean a little further from the rock direction the band can take and is a bit more of a quiet experience. Not that there aren't some driving songs, of course. Lucinda Williams does guest vocals on "Factory Girls", which are fucking incredible. Favorite Tracks: "Factory Girls" "Tobacco Island" "With a Wonder and Wild Desire"

Flogging Molly -- Float

61vv2XKgOLL._SL500_AA300_.jpg

The second entry from Flogging Molly on my list. Unlike the last album, this is almost all high energy stuff, and it's awesome. Not to say it's one note, the songs range from celebratory to mournful. Favorite Tracks: "Punch Drunk Grinning Soul" "Between a Man and a Woman" "The Lightning Storm" "Man with No Country"

Audioslave -- Audioslave

514RWTJvpHL._SL500_AA300_.jpg

Probably the only album that I loved in high school that I still love now. It's Chris fuckin' Cornell singing with the RATM guys. It's a shame the next two albums kind of sucked. Tom Morello is a bass god, though. Favorite Tracks: "Cochise" "Bring 'Em Back Alive"

O Brother Where Art Thou Soundtrack

31981399.jpg

Just a really nice collection of old folk songs. Favorite Tracks: "I Am A Man of Constant Sorrow" "Didn't Leave Nobody but the Baby"

The Pogues -- Rum, Sodomy and the Lash

61c6hm9t0mL._SL500_AA300_.jpg

Is there a bigger twat in the history of music than Shane McGowan? Probably not. But the motherfucker can sing. Again, another fusion of Irish Folk and Punk, as it's kind of my joint. "Dirty Old Town" might be my favorite love song, ever. Favorite tracks: "A Pair of Brown Eyes" "Dirty Old Town" "Body of an American"

Gorillaz -- Demon Days

demon-days.jpg

The only album on here that isn't entirely guitar/piano/vocally driven. Gorillaz is the rare band that can work for me, outside of my normal comfort zone, mostly due to Damon Alburn. The rappers brought in all kill it, though, so that's a plus. Also, the narrator on "Fire Coming Out of the Monkey's Head" is Dennis fucking Hopper. Awesome. Favorite Tracks: "Dirty Harry" "Feel Good Inc." "Dare"

A Perfect Circle -- eMOTIVe

a-perfect-circle-emotive-album-cover-8372.jpeg

Great album, which is much more cohesive than an album entirely made of covers has any right to be. Favorite Tracks: "Imagine" "Passive" "Counting Bodies Like Sheep to the Rhythm of the War Drum" "The Fiddle and the Drum"

Modest Mouse -- Good News for People Who Love Bad News

lanajaabf.jpg

Most people will tell you that "Moon and Antarctica" is better. Most people are wrong. Yes, this album is infinitely less complex and more poppy than Modest Mouse's previous efforts, but that's what keeps it from disappearing entirely up its own ass. Favorite Tracks: "Float On" "Bukowski" "Satin in a Coffin"

Korpiklaani -- Korven Kunnigas

Korven%20Kuningas.jpg

I don't speak Finnish, so a good 90% of the lyrics go right over my head. What I do know is this is some rocking folk metal. Favorite Tracks: "Keep On Galloping" "Gods on Fire"

The White Stripes -- Get Behind Me Satan

515NY3NS1EL._SL500_AA300_.jpg

Probably the hardest choice on this list, because all of the White Stripes albums rank about the same with me. Jack White is really among the last real rockstars, and can do about zero wrong as far as I'm concerned. Favorite Tracks: "My Doorbell" "Take, Take, Take" "Blue Orchid"

Johnny Cash -- American V: A Hundred Highways

51BToYzk17L._SL500_AA300_.jpg

I don't care who you are, you have to respect Johnny Cash. Like his music or not, his talent is undeniable. This album is very much a collection of his coming to terms with his own mortality, and though it's mournful, it's in its way, uplifting. Favorite Tracks: "God's Gonna Cut You Down" "Further On Up The Road" "Rose of My Heart"

Johnny Cash -- American VI: Ain't No Grave

51fuvxY%2BTJL._SL500_AA300_.jpg

Even more than American V, this is just simply uplifting. Even for someone like me, who doesn't sign on to Cash's Christian ideology, this album just makes me feel the beauty of being alive. Favorite Tracks: "Ain't No Grave" "Cool Water" "Aloha Ae"

Jet -- Get Born

61q78VkfF%2BL._SL500_AA300_.jpg

This album showed the world that classic rock can still be made in 2003, and can still sell. Just a great album, evocative of the Rolling Stones at their best. Favorite Tracks: "Roll Over DJ" "Cold Hard Bitch"

The Beatles -- Abbey Road

album-The-Beatles-Abbey-Road.jpg

There have been essays written about this album, frankly, there's nothing I can add. Favorite Tracks: "Come Together" "Here Comes the Sun" "Because"

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World Soundtrack

pilgrim__-300x300.jpg

Just a collection of songs I would probably never listen to alone, that work very, very well together. Favorite Tracks: "We Are Sex Bob-Omb" "Black Sheep" "Garbage Truck" "Under My Thumb"

The Book of Mormon Original Broadway Cast Album

The%20Original%20Broadway%20Cast%20Recording%20-%20The%20Book%20Of%20Mormon.jpg

Proof that musicals don't have to suck. Hilarious. Favorite Tracks: "Hello!" "Hasa Diga Eebowai" "Man Up" "All American Prophet"

Dropkick Murphys -- The Warrior's Code

DropkickMurphysTheWarriorsCode2005.jpg

Probably the easiest Dropkick album to just listen to. Favorite Tracks: "Green Fields of France" "Shipping Up to Boston"

Hayley Westenra -- Pure

517bDdj4ZLL._SL500_AA280_.jpg

A super talented young lady with an incredible voice. Favorite Tracks: "Amazing Grace" "Hine E Hine"

The Flaming Lips -- Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots

514RXxEyY%2BL._SL500_AA300_.jpg

Just plain fun. Love this one. Favorite Tracks: "Fight Test" "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots Pt. 1" "Do You Realize?"

In no particular order with reasoning, and broken up into groups of five to keep count. Please note that most of my music skews more instrumental. :P

Flogging Molly, Float - why helo thar soundtrack of my life.

Battlestar Galactica Season 4 soundtrack - some of Bear McCreary's best work. Just saying.

Streetlight Manifesto, 99 Songs of the Revolution - really fun ska covers.

The Book of Mormon cast recording: DUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUH.

Avenue Q soundtrack - my life's soundtrack lately, take 2.

Coraline soundtrack - holy fuck creepy ass music

The Fountain soundtrack - see Chris' reasoning.

Angela Aki, Home - album that holds a lot of meaning for me.

Marie Antoinette soundtrack - anachronistic? Absolutely. Great songs? Fuck yeah.

Scott Pilgrim (soundtrack and score and yes damnit it counts) - see Preston's reasoning.

Sting, Songs from the Labyrinth - partially only on here because of that year I spent studying Renaissance music for Academic Decathlon

Keane, Under the Iron Sea - great band, kind of a breakup album, but still good none theless

Zack and Miri Make a Porno soundtrack - again, great collection of songs that I probably wouldn't listen to on any other album

500 Days of Summer soundtrack - some of my favorite all time songs are on here

Sabrina takarazuka soundtrack - Sabrina, as a musical, sung entirely by Japanese chicks. Logical? Not really. Having seen it? Pretty damn fun, especially when the lead male player can pull a pretty good Bogart despite having tits.

Wall-E soundtrack: probably one of my favorite parts of the movie, except for the preachy vocal song

Weird Al Yankovic, Alpocalypse: Probably my favorite album of his, ever

Flogging Molly, Drunken Lullabies: highest concentration of my favorite songs of theirs

Great Big Sea, Sea of No Cares: fun folk rock and just a lot of songs that cut close for me

Kingdom Hearts II soundtrack: Fuck you, it's a good soundtrack.

Honorable mentions to the Muppets Green Album, the soundtrack for Gankutsuou, and anything involving Joe Hisaishi and/or Yuki Kajiura.

-The Clash's "London Calling" (greatest punk record of all time, hands down. Strummer is a Golden God and the band is on top here. I love the Clash but this is their opus)

-Fantomas "Director's Cut" (I love movie music. I love Mike Patton's Naked City brand of thrash jazz. How about Mike Patton's thrash jazz covers of classic movie themes? Yes please.)

-Natural Born Killers Soundtrack (could have chosen Judgement Night here, but this is the most eclectic collection of music ever put to CD. PLus it has the audio of Robert Downey Jr.'s best line in the film and it was the first time I ever heard Lard, to which I quickly replied "why the fuck have I never heard them before?")

-Guns N Roses' "Appetite for Destruction" (One of, if not the best rock records of all time. Fuck the haters, this is what rock and roll is.)

-Faith No More's "King For a Day...Fool For a LIfetime" (I go back and forth on almost all of the FNM Patton-era records as favorites, but this one has Gentle Art of Making Enemies which is my favorite song from them so I pick this now)

-Metallica's "Master of Puppets" (Metallica's best album. THE best metal album ever)

-Corrosion of Conformity's "Wiseblood" (Southern metal meltdown. Love this shit. Pepper Keenan is everything I ever aspired to as a singer.)

-Johnny Cash's "Live at San Quentin" (Live at Folson is the more popular one but this is way bette for me. The Carter Family guests on some brilliant gospel and Cash plays the song San Quentin TWICE...IN A FUCKING ROW! Ballsiest live album move in history. Plus, Boy named Sue.)

-Alice Cooper's "Billion Dollar Babies" (from 71-73 the Alice Cooper band released five amazing albums, this was the best as an album)

-Beach Boys' "Pet Sounds" (besides the weird psychedelic beach bum answer to Sgt. Pepper, this has some of the best BB songs. I grew up on this shit. Wouldn't it be Nice and God Only Knows are two of the best love songs ever and Sloop John B is one of their signature songs. If Good Vibrations made it on this record it may have been the greatest record of all time)

-Rolling Stones' "Let it Bleed" (again, from 68-72 the Stones released four of the best rock records ever made, but this one has two things those ones don't: Gimme Shelter and Midnight Rambler)

-Bad Religion's "Recipe for Hate" (Probably the best punk record in my lifetime. American jesus, All Good Soldiers, Kerosene, Man on a Mission...it goes on and on.)

-The Misfits "Static Age" (speaks for itself. the collection of non-horror movie related songs for the most part before everything was named after a horror movie.)

-Clutch's "Elephant Riders" (I loved Clutch in high school, but this bizarre concept album fucked my shit up. I remember saying out loud in math class listening to this for the first time when I should have been paying attention: is that a fucking trumpet?!"

-Roadrunner United "The All-Star Sessions" (One of the greatest musical accomplishments a record label ever commissioned. Look it up. If you're a metalhead, you need this record.)

-Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon" (epic and beautiful. I love Floyd but this is the pinnacle of their creativity. No flashy movie, no floating pig, just beautiful music.)

-Ennio Morricone's "Danger: Diabolik" (one of the most insane superhero movies ever with the swankiest score ever. Italian pop music as score. Amazing!)

-Turbonegro's "Scandinavian Leather" (these guys are rock and roll. This is their best record.)

-Tom Waits' "Mule Variations" (this was another shot in the dark, could have been Bone Machine or Alice or Swordfishtrombone, but this one won tonight)

-Nick cave & the Bad Seeds "Let Love In" (Fucking menacing and sexy. Most would choose Murder Ballads but this is my psychosexual music masterpiece)

There could have been another 20 albums but I chose these.
