Windows Update to Support Xbox

In Console News, submitted by Forcefire on 10/16/2005 9:14:34 AM

Microsoft today announced at the DigitalLife conference in New York City the availability of a new software update for Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005. The update Rollup 2 will enable customers to stream digital music, videos, photos, and standard and high-definition television and movies from Media Center PCs to any television in their home via the Xbox 360 gaming system.

Microsoft's update to the Media Center Edition of Windows will add the capability to stream digital media - music, videos, photos television and movies - from Media Center PCs to any television or device via Xbox 360. Company executives discussed plans to build the software earlier this year.

Microsoft already allows customers to stream media through devices it calls Media Center Extenders, and it has in the past sold a kit to make Xbox work with Media Center PCs. But the new software will make Xbox a peer in such arrangements and will for the first time include the ability to stream high-definition content. Xbox 360 consoles with special Media Center Extender technology will ship later this year.

The move could help promote sales of both Xbox and Media Center PCs, as Microsoft continues to link its products into a larger home entertainment plan, which still relies on the PC.

"The strategy here is quite simple. We want to create an environment based on Windows that will give consumers...the ability to take their content to any device that was connected back to a Windows PC. (Adding) the Xbox 360 is just the next evolution of that vision," said Brad Brooks, senior director of product management in Microsoft's Windows client division.

"In past extender experiences, we haven't been able to bring over the full navigation, 3D graphics and (user interface) experience on a Media Center. With an Xbox 360 you get all of that," he said.

The software update, called Update Rollup 2 for Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005, will support external DVD changers, so that users can manage up to 200 movies through Media Center interface, Brooks said. Media Center-supported DVD changers will be available beginning this year.

In addition, a new feature, called Away Mode, adds a consumer electronics-like on-off function to Media Center PCs. Away Mode enables the system to silently perform unattended tasks ? such as recording TV shows and streaming content to Media Center Extenders ? in a low-power mode that makes the PC appear off. Away Mode will be available on select new Media Center PCs in upcoming months from partners Acer, Fujitsu Siemens Computers, Gateway, HP, Phillips, Samsung and Shuttle.

Microsoft will also add new DVD-burning capabilities and will add support for additional high-definition TV tuners.

Updates to the Sonic Solutions DVD burning engine will improve the performance and capabilities of DVD burning in Media Center Edition. Consumers will be able to convert high-definition TV shows to standard definition and burn to a DVD all in one step, as well as burn to a DVD from other PCs on their home network.

Update Rollup 2 adds support for one more HDTV tuner, meaning it will support up to four tuners: two analog and two ATSC high definition. U.S. customers will be able to use two NTSC (analog) capture boards and two ATSC (digital) capture boards. This will enable personal video recording of two shows at the same time, broadcast as either ATSC digital TV (480p) or high-definition TV (720p/1080i).

Microsoft also plans to announce new deals with content providers to develop programming available to Media Center users. New to the list are: additional MTV and VH1 content, along with MTV Overdrive and a broadband video channel; the AOL Pictures digital photo service and AOL Radio featuring XM; the Akimbo Service, which offers more than 5,000 programs from the BBC, National Geographic and Discovery, as well as Major League Baseball playoff games; and two gaming services: Game xStream and Discover Games. The software update will be available as a free download for Media Center users on Friday from the company's Windows Update site. New PCs with the updated software installed should arrive at retailers by this weekend.

I'm beginning to think there's a giant conspiracy going on here and Microsoft is trying to eliminate gaming consoles and home entertainment centers by taking over those markets then merging them with the PC. Or I'm just over-analyzing, whatever.

Bungie Confirms Halo, Halo 2 on X360

They're not only compatible, but they run in 720p, too.

by David Adams

November 9, 2005 - Bungie's official site today revealed what any even half-intelligent Xbox gamer would have guessed: Halo and Halo 2 will run correctly on the Xbox 360. The better news, however, is that not only does Halo 2's Xbox Live functionality transfer intact, but both games on the X360 can render at widescreen, at 720p, with full-screen anti-aliasing.

From the official announcement:

"To clarify, the 'new' version of Halo or Halo 2 is simply the disk you have already. Pop it into your 360 and it'll load up just like before. You will have to log into Xbox Live to enable Halo 2's online functions, but both games will work immediately.

"But here's another bonus - the hardware in the 360 can do a lot of nifty stuff, and specifically in the cases of Halo and Halo 2, it can display the graphics in wide screen, at 720p, with full scene anti-aliasing. And it doesn't look kludgy, artifacty or smeary like an upscanning DVD player. The best way to describe it is that both games look like they're running on a PC at those resolutions."

Previous Microsoft sell-sheets confirmed months ago that Halo 2 was backward compatible on Xbox 360. It's also a no-brainer that Halo would be backward compatible. But at 720 with full anti-aliasing? Nice. Cheers goes out to Bungie for saying what we aleady know.

We're doing our own tests and tickles of the Xbox 360's backwards compatibility as we speak -- stay tuned for plenty more on what we find.

Official X360 Launch Titles, Accessories Revealed

Microsoft finally spills the November 22 beans.

by David Adams

November 14, 2005 - Let's put the unfortunate confusion of X05's mysterious "launch title" announcement behind us. However you or Microsoft or your mother want to define "launch window" -- is it the time it takes caramel to melt and drip into your little sister's crayon box? -- what gamers really want to know is which X360 games can we actually buy on November 22?

Today, at last, Microsoft released the official list of Xbox 360 games set to be available on, or even before, November 22 in North America. All told, 18 games are supporting Microsoft's step into the next generation:

* Amped 3 (2K Sports)

* Call of Duty 2 (Activision)

* Condemned: Criminal Origins (SEGA)

* FIFA Soccer 06 Road to 2006 FIFA World Cup (Electronic Arts)

* GUN (Activision)

* Kameo: Elements of Power (Microsoft)

* Madden NFL 06 (Electronic Arts)

* NBA 2K6 (2K Sports)

* NBA LIVE 06 (Electronic Arts)

* Need for Speed Most Wanted (Electronic Arts)

* NHL 2K6 (2K Sports)

* Perfect Dark Zero (Microsoft)

* Peter Jackson's King Kong: The Official Game of the Movie (Ubisoft)

* Project Gotham Racing 3 (Microsoft)

* Quake 4 (id Software and Activision)

* Ridge Racer 6 (Namco)

* Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 06 (Electronic Arts)

* Tony Hawk's American Wasteland (Activision)

Microsoft-published X360 titles are priced at a suggested $49.99, suggesting other publishers will offer similar prices. At the very least, it's doubtful we'll be paying $70 per next-gen title as some had feared.

The Xbox 360 launch is also supported by 13 accessories to make the retail frenzy complete:

* Xbox 360 Wireless Controller

* Xbox 360 Controller (wired)

* Xbox 360 Wireless Networking Adapter

* Xbox 360 Universal Media Remote

* Xbox 360 Faceplates

* Xbox 360 Hard Drive (20 GB)

* Xbox 360 Headset

* Xbox 360 Memory Unit (64 MB)

* Xbox 360 Play & Charge Kit

* Xbox 360 Rechargeable Battery Pack

* Xbox 360 Component HD-AV Cable

* Xbox 360 S-Video AV Cable (U.S. only)

* Xbox 360 VGA HD AV Cable

Finally, Microsoft will offer 12-month and three-month Xbox Live Premium Starter Packs and between 12 and 15 Xbox Live Arcade titles when the new console hits.

Xbox 360 Glitches Reported

Elizabeth Millard

In an informal online poll, some Xbox 360 users have noted that they are seeing glitches in their gaming consoles.

On the Teamxbox.com site, run by Fox Interactive unit IGN Entertainment, a poll on the forums indicated that between 14 and 16 percent of respondents are having problems with their machines.

Microsoft has not reported any major issues and has noted that any difficulties are only in a very small number of the consoles.

The Xbox 360 was released on November 22, and online discussion sites have been filling up with reports on the gameplay features since then.

Current Issues

In the Teamxbox.com forum, about 100 users have reported issues with their consoles. Problems related to possible overheating seem to be the most common issue, with machine shutdowns as a result.

Users have reported that their machines shut down after only about a half hour of play, and troubleshooting efforts uncovered heating issues.

The results of the poll are unscientific, and are not being seen on other parts of the Web. Some observers have pointed out that users experiencing problems would be more likely to report them on the site than users who are happy with their Xbox 360 experience, which would skew the poll's results.

Also, there are a number of satisfied users also weighing in on the Xbox 360. Currently, about 600 respondents not only have reported no trouble, but also have praised the console for its interface and controller functions.

Wait and See

Possible problems with the Xbox 360 are likely to be limited in scope, noted Forrester Research analyst Ted Schadler, simply because the consoles are sold out.

"Clearly, it's a hot product because you can't get one," he said. "There's a serious shortage in available units, which is interesting, considering the holiday season is so close."

But loss of holiday dollars could work out in Microsoft's favor if glitches really do have to be fixed, Schadler added.

"A staged rollout might be a way to minimize the impact of any issues, if they exist," he noted.

Microsoft sued over alleged Xbox 360 glitch

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A Chicago man who bought Microsoft Corp.'s new Xbox 360 has sued the world's largest software maker, saying the new video game console has a design flaw that causes it to overheat and freeze up.

The proposed class action claims that in Microsoft's bid to gain share in the $25 billion global video game market, the company was so intent on releasing the Xbox 360 before competing next-generation machines from Sony Corp. and Nintendo Co Ltd. that it sold a "defectively designed" product.

Robert Byers, who brought the suit, said the power supply and central processing unit in the Xbox 360 overheat, affecting heat-sensitive chips and causing the console to lock up.

Microsoft spokeswoman Molly O'Donnell on Monday said the company does not comment on pending litigation.

Complaints about the problem surfaced quickly on gaming enthusiast Web sites after the Xbox 360 debuted on November 22.

Console owners reported that some systems had crashed during regular use as well as during online game play using the Xbox Live service. Problems included screens going black and the appearance of a variety of error messages.

At the time O'Donnell told Reuters: "We have received a few isolated reports of consoles not working as expected."

She declined to say how many reports Microsoft had received and said that calls reporting the issue to the company represented a "very, very small fraction" of units sold.

The lawsuit, filed on Friday in federal court in Illinois, seeks unspecified damages and litigation-related expenses, as well as the replacement or recall of Xbox 360 game consoles.

If Sony doesn't do something fast, they are going to lose all of their exclusives.

What the hell are they gonna do exactly? The average PS3 game needs to sell a minimum of 500,000 copies to recoup development costs. There aren't even that many console units shipped worldwide. Meaning, it's impossible to make money on the PS3 as software developer right now, even with a killer app.

No 3rd party developer will keep its titles PS3 exclusive until Sony ships enough consoles for them to make money. It's simple economics. Now, the real question is, will they get these exclusives back once they do have enough units in the market? Or can the XBox 360, or maybe even GfW steal them away or make everything multi-platform?

If you are going to buy an XBox 360, read this first!

Engadget has managed to get pictures of what appears to be a new edition of the Xbox 360. Codenamed Zephyr, it is expected that Microsoft will make an official announcement this weekend as part of its CES 2007 keynote.

Engadget reports that the new console will make use of the upcoming Xbox 360 processor built on a 65nm process and in addition, Zephyr will incorporate a built-in HDMI port and a 120GB hard drive.

The existance of Zephyr raises many questions... Will Zephyr replace the current Premium edition of the Xbox 360? If so, will the existing Premium become the Core edition? Will Microsoft replace an existing Xbox 360 with a Zephyr one in case your console breaks? How many people will try to break theirs? How many Xbox 360 owners will be pissed because of the new edition of the Xbox 360?

After they announce the pricing for it, you might decide to wait to get the new version. Though, the older version price might go down so keep watching this story.

Not that I don't believe you, but do you have a source on that?

"We're always working on prototypes and new technologies and just playing with stuff in Redmond to see what's interesting. ... At the moment, everything you might have seen is just looking at our experimentation back in Redmond, not really a product that we're thinking about announcing," he said.

Interesting story about the logistics behind a price drop for both the PS3 and the 360:

http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20070205-8767.html

PS3 and the 360: The race to 65nm

There have always been game consoles that competed directly against each other for sales, market share, and third-party support. Today, the battle is very much between Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Sony's PlayStation 3, with Nintendo opting to play a different kind of game with the Wii. As the 360 and PS3 are closely matched in terms of performance and the types of games they play, the winner may be the company that reduces the cost of their platform the fastest.

One of the best ways to reduce manufacturing costs of any high-end electronic devices is to use a die shrink, where a more fine-grained optical process allows more transistors to be packed into the same area. In the case of a game console, the same number of transistors can be delivered in a smaller area and with lower power dissipation, lowering the cost of manufacturing the console by lowering the cost per-chip and cutting down on the amount of active cooling needed.

For both the 360 and PS3, the big move is from a 90nm process to a 65nm one. Sony indicated in a recent press conference that the company had already started production of parts of the PS3 chipset on a 65nm process. Microsoft had previously announced, along with its manufacturing partner Chartered Semiconductor, that the Xbox CPU would be moving to 65nm Silicon-on-Insulator (SOI) technology in the first quarter of 2007, although there are rumors that this migration may not be complete until the second quarter.

How much could each company save by this migration? A report in the Chinese-language paper Commercial Times estimates that Microsoft could reduce the cost of the CPU, northbridge, and GPU on the 360 from about $200 to $150 with a 65nm migration. The research firm iSuppli estimated that the total bill-of-material (BOM) cost of the Premium Xbox 360 is down to about $323 from $525 at launch, which would significantly help Microsoft's margins.

iSuppli puts the BOM cost of the premium PS3 at $840, which means Sony is losing as much as $240 on each unit. A similar component price reduction from the move to a 65nm process would lower this loss to under $200 per console.

If Sony completes the transition first, it will allow the company to execute the much-rumored price drop on the PS3, which can't come soon enough for Sony's flagship console. The PS3 sold well out of the gate but sales have tapered off as the non-early-adopting public waits for more compelling games and a lower sticker price. As for the 360, it has sold moderately well so far, with Microsoft estimating 10.4 million units delivered to retailers, but if Microsoft wants to maintain their lead over the PS3 they will likely have to drop their price as well. Microsoft has been coy about discussing any 360 price drops, although they did once say that consumers could expect one cut per year.

It is worth noting that Nintendo also benefited from process shrinks with the Wii, although their strategy was to take similar technology from the GameCube with more modest improvements (a higher clock speed, mostly) and gain the cost benefit of the die shrink right away. So far, their gamble has paid off, as Wiis continue to be in short supply.

The old ninja turtles game will also be coming to XBLA soon. :D

It came out today. I seem to remember that game being good when I was younger. It's horrible now. I've been spoiled by games with good controls. As for the graphics, lets just say it didn't age well. It always amazes me that they can take an old game from the 80s, slap a border around it to fit widescreen tvs, and then call it a high def game. At least on the other games, the border looks good. In this one, it's really pixelated and looks like ass. I call this one of the worst games on XBLA, and definitely the worst retro port. They should have made the game screen smaller to make the graphics look better.

A friend of mine was complaining to me about the TMNT port because I can't play with him. He's telling me that the only way to play multiplayer for the game is if I had a 360 (I don't) and the game (yeah... no). It seems silly that they won't let me walk to my friend's house and pick up a controller and play with him.
