I've just watched the 10 minute news discussion of Dent's DA poll night. They're really pulling out all the stops here - a 10 minute piece that won't even make it into the actual film? That's impressive.

yeah i just saw it about five minutes ago.

It really shows how much effort has gone into this.

it also shows that this story really is going to be about more than just batman, this story is going to have so many things going on at once. i hope it doesn't do what happened to batman returns in my opinion and have so many things going on it loses sight of certain things and doesn't resolve others.

also Anthony Michael Hall, i thought he'd be a roaming reporter, but this could work as well.

all in all if you haven't seen it, it really is worth checking out, plus the next episode about Bruce Wayne looks interesting.

Lock Scarecrow away. And Two Face. And Joker. And whoever is in the next two. And then you make the fifth one Knightfall, with them all breaking out and Bane being behind it all. That's the only way I would really care about these Bat movies.

Why the fuck do so many people love Knightfall and Bane so much ?

I don't get it. Is it just a nostalgia thing?

Because Batman lost. It's great that Batman is this super duper detective and is a great hero, but it gets REALLY old when he wins no matter what, every single time. DC has written themselves into a corner with Batman because he seemingly beats everyone and everything in front of him. In Knightfall, he got the shit kicked out of him, and when it looked like he might pull through, he got his back broken. That was some huge shit, especially for Batman.

Not sure if it means much to most people, but one of my favourite critics James Beradinelli has reviewed the film calling it the best superhero movie of all time. I've mostly ignored the reviews, but this one has me really intrigued. I’ve respected the guy’s opinion ever since I started visiting his site years ago.

Anyone worried that they are setting their expectations far too high for this film. With extensive ad campaign they have done, the focus on the Joker, esp after Ledgers death and how good the first one was? Until now I have been confident it would live up to my own hype, but with under a week to go (I'm going on Sunday to the IMAX session) and imposing a media blackout on myself to avoid any spoilers, I am left wondering if I am putting too much pressure on.

I don't know, I've been so much into the hype, but I think when I watch it I'll just block it out and try to judge the film on its own merits. Of course, I say that as someone who booked tickets a week ahead so I could see it tonight, when normally I'd wait for it to die down a bit before seeing it.

But hey, after all the praise it's getting from critics and fans, I doubt you'll be disappointed. I'll probably be posting a few spoiler-free opinions of it tonight as well, if you want to hear my 2c.

I'm actually not worried. The most common pattern we've experienced thus far in the Comic Book Movie genre has been how the 2nd film has been superior to the first film(X-Men II, Spider-Man II, Blade II and Fantastic Four: The Rise of the Silver Surfer). I believe this will follow in that tradition and with the dark, gritty core that Nolan and Goyer set there Batman world in there isn't much room for failure if you really care about the franchise. The 3rd film I may keep my hopes low, this goes with the fact the 3rd film from the comic book movie genres are inferior to its predecessor(X3, Spider-Man III, Blade: Trinity) not my faith in the writers, for we can see they care for the franchise.

So I thought I’d give my general opinion of the film. I’m not really going to go into spoiler territory until more people have seen it, but I’ll put my opinions into spoiler tags anyway just so I don’t spoil the experience for anyone.

I thought Ledger’s Joker was excellent. He definitely added his own quirks to the character, but it never felt out of place. The writing for the character, his lines and his actions, all felt more like they came from people with a genuine love for the comics. The dude just loves to cause chaos, and he likes to do it in the most elaborate way possible. He’s playing a game with the Batman, who’s the one person he genuinely respects.

Harvey Dent was great as well. Eckhart did a great job with showing his frustration from trying to make Gotham a better place. I didn’t think Two Face was given enough screen time though. I think I would have liked it more if they set him up for the sequel, but as it is he fits into this film really well.

They went out of their way to make Batman seem more human this time around. He gets beat up and bruised, and is constantly struggling with the Joker (who always manages to stay a step ahead). The plan he uses to find and take him down is kinda goofy though. I’d put it on the same level as the water evaporation thing in the first movie. Still, most of his detective work is pretty cool regardless.

Outside of that, there were a few niggling problems I had with the script. Little plot holes or gaps in logic here and there (most of which I’ve forgotten now). I doubt they would hurt anyone’s enjoyment of the film though.
