I like the movie, and I can't find anything to say against mikes points. By the way, if I win that, it will be opened! I can agree with a lot of the points brought up but I do have a couple of things to say about this film that maintains it at around 3/5 in my book. Even though its not said I think the timeframe deal is just poorly explained rather than crucially flawed. This isn't all happening in one week, all that stuff didn't just happen in one night. This stems from Burton's usual style over substance storytelling. What I mean by substance in this case is the sort of clues, realistic characters or hard-nosed realistic background. Just because you can't lay out a calender and point to each event happening day by day it doesn't mean they all happened at once. The date with Vicky Vale at the mansion for example, I took to be happening several days after the fundraiser, a pretty reasonable expectation. Regarding the supposed stupidity or oddness of the characters I think that these people act as they do because they are basically living cartoons, a motif taken from every other big 80's family action blockbuster in some form or another. People act a certain way because it works, especially when the Joker comes courting. Does it make a lot of sense? No. What it does have is a good rhythm throughout, culminating in the already rattled Vale opening the box and fainting. Its also a little unfair to have a go at her for getting the door. He needs time to collect his thoughts and the persistant doorbell isn't helping, she probably just wants to get rid of whoever it is for Bruce's sake. The innate pacing of each scene is what makes the film work if you don't think about it too much. Keaton's Wayne is just great, its not that he's airheaded per se, he's just preoccupied, supposedly with Vale. His rapport with Alfred is so strong that Alfred recognises this (whilst collecting drinks and pens), forming the basis for his affection and trust for Vale. Oh yeah, by the way, name the richest guy living in your city. Go on, name him. I'm betting he makes the society pages on occasion but I bet you don't specifically know who he is. Its the same in Gotham. Not saying that anyone should know that Vale and Wayne are an item but its not automatic that everyone knows who Bruce is. Anyway, to my final point. This was directed by Tim Burton. If you expected Bruce to be out doing tough detective work or the issue of police corruption to be fully explore, maybe you should have lobbied for Michael Mann. Its Tim Burton! He got offered the biggest blockbuster of the decade and said yes, gave you his interpretation and you blame him? He's never done a film packed with realistic action or dealing with the moral ambiuitites of vigelantes. He tell fantastical stories about astonishing people in a way that a child can enjoy and understand. You and I might love the Dark Knight, but it was a bit tough for a few people in the audiance to understand (I know, I heard the complaints) and the general estimated intellegence of a viable blockbuster audiance was a lot lower 20 years ago when this was being made. This film went dark whilst retaining enough of the camp (and yes it is camp) to draw on its biggest potential audiance, ie everyone who remembered the old TV show. The honestly couldn't take it as far as you guys would have liked at the time, they would not have been allowed to by the producers. All the other stuff, Vickie Vale being annoying, Batman killing people, the batcave 'encounter', Napier killing the Waynes, all that I agree with. Also, it may seem like a long show (and it is - I'm surprised Mike turned it around so quickly), but there's almost an hour cut out of this show! If that's the case, what Bruce means is, though he suspected Penguin from the beginning, these new developments proves that Penguin is up to no good. You can paraphrase it: Alfred: Well, aren't you happy now that your cynicism is proved right? Bruce: No, why would I?
