slothian
I don't think Mendes was down to return in the first place. The franchise doesn't have tenure directors nowadays.
dc20willsave
It's mostly that in interviews, he's been saying that he was 70% sure he would be returning.
Koete
They should be hoping they get Roger Deakins back for cinematography.
dc20willsave
Sam Mendes is in talks to return as director. The consequence is, since Mendes has commitments for the next year, preproduction can't start until then.

Missy
I would love that, but fanboys will literally explode if they don't say "James Bond" is a codename and not a single man.<------ 20,000!
Koete
How badass would it have been if he walked through the door in the last scene of Skyfall?
Molly
Didn't Skyfall pretty much ruin the codename arguement?
slothian
Didn't Skyfall pretty much ruin the codename arguement? Yes, yes it did. And how exactly would Elba introducing himself at the end of the film have fitted with the story? I like Elba as much as the next guy, but I"m pretty happy with Craig atm. And if he IS doing two more films then Elba will be a tad old to inherit the role (nowt to do with his ethnicity, although there'd definitely be people who protest a black Bond, particularly given how "fans" reacted to a blonde Bond). dc20willsave
Didn't Skyfall pretty much ruin the codename arguement? I think it was Mike a couple of years ago who came up with the idea that they kill off Craig in his last film and, to honor him, they choose to use Bond as the codename for all future 007s. Because not only does it feel like Craig's last Bond film, but the ending is so constructed to feel like the original franchise that introducing the next Bond in that scene would have been a brilliant meta moment. Of course, I wouldn't expect them to do that, it was just something I thought of while watching it.
KnightWing
I think the problem with James Bond being a codename is that it doesn't make any sense for MI6 to do that. It barely makes any sense for James Bond himself to keep using his own name everywhere he goes; he's supposed to be a secret agent for God's sake. If MI6 purposely had someone use an ongoing alias like that, all they'd do is alert their enemies to the fact that the same person is going around and foiling multiple villain plans. I think it was Mike a couple of years ago who came up with the idea that they kill off Craig in his last film and, to honor him, they choose to use Bond as the codename for all future 007s. Actually it was the plot basis for the 1967 spoof Casino Royale, which is a very poor, incomprehensible film. I'm not saying Mike didn't say that as well, but then Mike thinks The Doctor can fly, etc etc... Yes, yes it did. I disagree that it felt like Craig's last Bond film, although if you rephrased it to say this is the first Craig film that had a realistic sense of closure, I'd agree. It'd give Craig a better out than either of his previous films. And the Bond franchise doesn't really do meta moments. They do callbacks, but that's a different kettle of fish. Missy
And the Bond franchise doesn't really do meta moments. The only two I can recall are George Lazenby's introduction (RE: "This never happened to the other fellow") and Q in Skyfall joking about exploding pens. But as you state, they weren't all that regular either.

slothian
I agree to an extent - the Austin Powers series did skewer some of the more fantastical elements of the Bond franchise......as well as the titular character pissing to keep the continuity of a water fountain of course. But the series spoofed the genre in general - Austin Powers is just as akin to Derek Flint than he is James Bond. If anything, whilst the series usually reinvented itself with every Bond actor, it was Die Another Day which pushed the absurdity too far within the context of its contemporary trappings. I get Craig's point, and ultimately the series will never revert to the tone of the 60s era Bonds, even if Blofeld does get brought back. But the popularity of the Austin Powers trilogy is a factor rather than the factor.
Donomark
I love the fact that he invoked the idea that the Bond films are "family movies". Reminds me of the whole k.d. Lang controversy you guys mentioned back on FYEO.
