The New Guy (1/8)

  1. I read through half of the first piece already, and had no idea it was part of a wider series until I saw this thread. It sounds fantastic, and it’s a really interesting insight. If you want any advice on how to approach the Vampire from a different perspective, shoot me a PM. I’ve got quite a few things on the Sexual Theory surrounding them, some Freudian analysis of horror and repression and various other bits and bobs. But, you probably either have that covered at this point, or enough material to fill your columns. And I’m so interested by the topic, I could use the material I have to blatantly steal your momentum and produce my take on vampires once you’ve finished the series. Anyway, back to the other half..
  2. Keep in mind that this was the first show, so certain things needed to be mentioned. Others, like my comment about the silent pauses, could have been omitted. You, James and Jenny have all said this, and I thank you all for pointing it out. Yeah, it being the first show didn't help. But information about not knowing how long you'll do this, and the silent pauses, could've been said once you've established what the shows about. I have this philosophy, that in all forms of entertainment, you should never dedicate as much time to describing what you’re doing, as you spend actually doing it. It’s just like a column in that sense. Out of curiosity, what did I dwell on? Jenny says ICO; what do you say? Specifically, the part where you said you couldn’t tell us much about the game, but kept attempting to nonetheless. And working with somebody else will help, and probably be more fun for you too.
  3. Brave thing to do. You’ve got a very conversational style, which works in your favour. It sounds just like we’re having a phone conversation, and you’re rambling on while I’m taciturn on the toilet. A few words of friendly advice: - don’t start a show off by going through the small print. Try and grab the listener, and tease some details of what’s to come. - don’t dwell too long on any one thing. - if you didn’t already, write a script, like a foetus-column, raw and leaving plenty of room for growth once actually speaking. You did a heck of a job really. Talking non-stop for 35-minutes is definitely an impressive feat. I think in general, these conversational audio programs work better when you have somebody to talk and bounce off, but that may be difficult in your position. In a way you have to create a dual-personality, where you debate with yourself. The most important thing to start with, was that you seemed very comfortable and were easy to listen to.
  4. This sounds incredibly ambitious, and in my eyes that’s a good thing. Its success, I think, will depend on the additional writers they’ll inevitably have to hire. They could make it an animation series, which would be interesting, and lend itself to self-contained episodes. But yeah, if they don’t, they’re going to have deal with interlinking stories, and find a way of not being too repetitious.
  5. Roven's an idiot when it comes to the creative side. Nobody on the net has seriously discussed the casting of the Riddler, mostly because nobody seems to suspect he'll play any part in the sequel. But he lets Nolan and Goyer do what they want, and that's the most important thing. Bettany would make a perfect Joker. The only thing that counts against him, is that he's playing another major villain in The Da Vinci Code. That may ruin his whole mystic, and if he isn’t a particularly diverse actor then he may end up acting the same performance twice.
  6. Thanks Logan. Like I told Yoda, I was a bit out of my depth with this, but I enjoyed the cathartic experience of writing it. It’s the first time that I’ve been able to translate exactly what I’m thinking into an article, so it may have been a tad jumbled, but I enjoyed the process mucho amountos.
  7. I can relate. There's an irrational itch that leads my mind to splurt out against better judgement - turrets-like - that this looks appalling. It just looks so OTT, as if a Donner fanboy is trying desperately to recapture the magic of the (very outdated) original Superman. It seems - so far at least - that Singer's making a film that belongs in the 70s. I still am completely unconvinced by the premise of the movie (30 years after Superman 2 in movie time, 7 years in ours, & completely ignoring Superman 3 and 4), but even aside from that, this looks disappointing. It's not the hard-biting, new-age, melodrama free Superman I had wished for
  8. Yoda, what's the reaction to Batman over at the Oratory? I see a thread about it, but I'm avoiding spoilers until Friday at all costs. Can you summarise what the opinion is? Danke.
  9. Aintitcoolnews was the first site to break the news, and now they are reporting that John Moore and Brett Ratner are the two in the running to take over from Vaughn. All I have to say is Ugh.
  10. Grammer cast in 'X3' If Variety is correct, then that's pretty out of the blue. I can see why they cast him, because his gentle etiquette does suit the mild mannered Dr. 'Hank' McCoy, and he is a great (classically trained) actor, but it is quite odd casting nonetheless.
  11. This was really hard for me to read, because I didn’t want to spoil a single thing. I don’t even fully know how spoiler-free your reviews were because I tended to skip the paragraphs where it seemed like you were headed down a dangerous road. Still, there were lots in these reviews that I could read, and a lot of stuff I could admire. I never realised how accomplished a writer you were until I came over here. You’re very professional and very readable. I like your style, whiteboy. The whole Sin City week has been fantastic. Great idea and really good execution. Now all I have to say is roll on Sin City: the film review. And yeah, I’m going to have to buy all the Sin City books. I’ve been trying to for awhile, but I think they’re all being re-released because most of the old prints have sold out. ARGH!
  12. I thought that lanky girl who Peter Parker shared some pie with was going to turn out to be the Black Cat. There’s certainly a couple of lines in the dialogue about either her or her father having the eyes and ears of a feline, which would support that. Also, the scene where they’re together in Peter’s apartment has virtually no bearing on the narrative, so it would make sense if it was given meaning in retrospect.
  13. Really? I've looked on Yahoo news, AICN.com and IGN.com and found nothing. Where did you hear it? Vaughn is completely out of left field. But as well as him being responsible for Layer Cake, he also had a strong hand in Snatch and Lock, Stock. Perhaps he even had a bigger hand than we'd first think, because the only thing Guy Richie has done without him is Swept Away, and we all know how terrible that was. Strange choice. Vaughn gave the impression he was better suited to tackle the next Bond.
  14. So all of a sudden this is coming out in June in the UK? What the hell is up with that? I thought it was originally heading our way on April 22nd.
