Favorite One-on-One Fights in Film

You Know Who

Recommended Posts

Exclusively those involving two combatants receiving no direct assistance from third characters (for example, Spidey's first confrontation with Doc Ock in Spider-Man 2 is out, since Aunt May assists Spidey at one point).

These are my top ten, though not too strictly ordered:

1. King Kong vs. T. rex (1933 version)

2. Nicholas Angel vs. Simon Skinner (Hot Fuzz)

3. Sam vs. Shelob (The Return of the King)

4. The Beast vs. Gaston (Beauty and the Beast)

5. Luke Skywalker vs. Darth Vader (The Empire Strikes Back)

6. James Bond vs. Alec Trevelyan (GoldenEye)

7. James Bond vs. Oddjob (Goldfinger)

8. Batman and Bane's first confrontation (The Dark Knight Rises)

9. Hamlet vs. Laertes (in the 1996 film; in this case, I just mean from when Laertes first draws blood, not the sporting fencing beforehand)

10. Harry Potter vs. Voldemort (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2; not crazy about most of the wand fights in the Harry Potter films and this one, while probably the best, still isn't perfect)

Honorable Mention: Loki vs. The Hulk (The Avengers; most of my favorites are more-or-less evenly-balanced fights a few minutes long; this one the main exception)

I tried to limit mine to one or two per franchise, hence why there aren't more from Star Wars or Bond films. I'm sure there are a dozen so that I'm forgetting, but which will be brought up by other people.

Inigo Montoya Vs Count Rugen in The Princess Bride

Nick Angel Vs Simon Skinner in the model village from Hot Fuzz

Sherlock Holmes Vs Jame Moriarty in Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (Because the physical battle is played out entirely hypothetically by both men)

Captain American vs. the Winter Solider on the streets of Washington is in my head right now. There are plenty others tho.

Along the same lines, the Hulk vs Abomination in Incredible Hulk. A huge part of why I love that movie so much.

Now the first post got me thinking of that counts. I mean the military get involved but they don't really assist so much as distract. Hmm.
