dc20willsave
The Nominations are in. Outside of The Lego Movie not getting nominated for Best Animated Feature (a major oversight in my opinion) I'm fairly content with the nominations this year. Donomark
Surprised Gone Girl didn't get more nominations. I suppose the most arguable one, Miranda Frost for Best Actress, is what matters the most.
Missy
Michael Keaton is an Oscar-nominated actor!
Missy
Also: Batman, Rocket Raccoon, Sherlock Holmes / Dr. Strange, and Maxwell Smart.
Dread
Actor/Actress/Supporting for both: whitewhitewhitewhitewhite. Hell, you had to get to director to find a Mexican. Good for Keaton, but I don't think Birdman is the kind of movie that wins Oscars. It's the kind that gets nominated to satisfy film fans. It did get nominated for an awful lot, though. Koete
I'm glad Nightcrawler got a Screenplay nod, but man, Jake Gyllenhaal deserves that acting trophy.
slothian
By the by, has anyone here seen Birdman? If so, what say you? I take what Des says about the whitewash, but I counter with a flag! That's right, perceived racism in an ultimately meaningless awards ceremony bothers me not if there's a ton of Brits in there! Even if I'm amused that one guy has essentially gurned his way to an Oscar nomination. Admittedly, I've not watched Theory of Everything and Eddie Redmayne was pretty good in The Black Death so for all I know, he does very well, but the whole marketing campaign seems to be based upon him wearing glasses and gurning. Also, Rosamund Pike. Time for a nostalgic Google search...
Koete
Gurning vs. Cumberbatching.
Stavros
Also, Rosamund Pike. Time for a nostalgic Google search...
dc20willsave
If anyone wants to watch the awards with me, I'll be in chat tomorrow night (plus red carpet). Predictions: Most of the races this year are going to be boring with no likely upsets. The only potential upset might come if Birdman went really far over. The most concrete will be: Best Supporting Actor Will/Should Win: J. K. Simmons, "Whiplash" Might Win: Edward Norton, "Birdman" Best Supporting Actress Will/Should Win: Patricia Arquette, "Boyhood" Might Win: Emma Stone, "Birdman" Best Actress: Will Win: Julianne Moore, "Still Alice" Should Win: Rosamund Pike, "Gone Girl" Could Win: HA! That's funny. Julianne has every award from this last season so far plus the stigma of having lost a metric shit ton of times before when nominated for an Oscar. If she somehow loses, I will not just do that review of 50 Shades but do a follow-up for each sequel. As for more competitive races... Best Original Screenplay: Will Win: Birdman Should Win: The Grand Budapest Hotel/Birdman Could Win: Boyhood Best Adapted Screenplay Will/Should Win: The Imitation Game Could Win: Whiplash Best Animated Feature: Will Win: How to Train Your Dragon 2 (Namebrand recognition sadly) Should/Could Win: The Tale of Princess Kaguya Best Actor Will/Should Win: Michael Keaton "Birdman" (Going with Keaton mainly since it's about an actor who wants to be known for more than a comic book role. How meta is that and how much will an organization of mostly actors eat that up?) Could Win Eddie Redmayne, "The Theory of Everything" Best Director Will/Should Win: Richard Linklater, "Boyhood" Could Win: Alejandro G. Iñárritu, "Birdman" Best Picture Will Win: Birdman Should Win: Boyhood/Birdman Could Win: Boyhood
Missy
Michael Keaton winning will be the best birthday present ever.
