dc20willsave
Depending, Disney can just release it as an exclusive to Disney+ or, more likely, Hulu.
JackFetch
Disney Says The New Mutants Is Still Getting a Theatrical Release I'll believe it when they start releasing trailers.
Missy
It's been pushed back. Again! This time to April 2020.
JackFetch
They might as well rewrite and film it again at this point.
dc20willsave
New trailer is supposed to hit on the 6th, film is dated for April 3rd.

Missy
This actually looks like it might be kinda interesting. It also looks like a lot of focus will be placed on Anya Taylor-Joy's Magik. Hopefully Charlie Heaton will bring a little more to Cannonball than what we're shown here, 'cause I do love me some Sam Guthrie. Alice Braga is playing Cecilia Reyes, but I'm thinking (and hoping) she's Miss Sinister in disguise.
Dread
It looks pretty heavily implied that she's Miss Sinister. Is that why the delay I wonder? Same character in Dark Phoenix? They trying to wait for the stink to waft away? Like I said for the last trailer a bajillion years ago: I'm in. Looks great!
Missy
Based solely on the focus that's being put on Magik, I'm wondering if the reshoots were to make the movie more about her.
teenalphabro
I'm cautiously optimistic about this. It looks interesting, but. I don't know, my gut's telling me to be worried about this. At the same time, tho, I want to go and see this thing.

This is the director's cut. The reshoots apparently introduced a new character and they aren't using them.
Missy
In light of COVID-19, Disney has delayed releasing Mulan, Antlers, and New Mutants. We were so close! At this point, toss in on Disney+, Hulu, and same-day Blue-ray.
teenalphabro
Fucking amen, it's already finished.
dc20willsave
Especially since some of the studios are already sending recent/same-day releases to streaming. Mulan, I can see why Disney is holding off on that one. New Mutants and Antlers, films it inherited from the merger, those are kinda odd. Let's see where we are in a couple of weeks. teenalphabro
Sidenote, the main Mulan actress came out against the Hong Kong protests, so like: maybe don't go see that.
Missy
Guess what? AGAIN! Disney has rejigged their entire schedule due to COVID-19, and New Mutants has been completely pulled from the calendar. As someone pointed out on Twitter, it's doubtful it will ever make it to Disney+ because there are no R-rated movies on the service. So that means we're looking at 2021, a Hulu drop, a re-edited version to get to PG-13 for Disney+, or nothing.
Missy
Will pointed out to me that it's PG-13, not R, so Disney+ is indeed an option.
teenalphabro
Honestly, I don't even know why it hasn't gone up already.
dc20willsave
A reason I saw online: HBO had an existing agreement with 20th Century Fox. Because the film was produced under Fox, HBO gets initial streaming rights. With HBO Max launching soon, Disney would basically be giving them something to lead with by sending it straight to Digital. It's a cynical reason but a reason. Missy
Ah, that's fascinating.
dc20willsave
And it tracks. When Disney+ in the EU went live, they had the original X-Men trilogy. The closest we have is Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. Looking around online, it looks like the deal goes until 2022. So, we'll get New Mutants in 2023. Professor
Now scheduled for 8/28. I remain skeptical.
Missy
No way that happens. LA County has extended their stay-at-home order until mid-August, and I foresee other cities and counties following suit. And even if places reopen soon, or even by the end of June or July, I don't see people wanting to be inside a cinema. Disney will surely be paying attention to the public's willingness (or lack thereof) to congregate once more, and I think they'll yank it for the final time. dc20willsave
We're not seeing it until 2021. HBO has first Streaming Rights so no going direct to Disney+ or Hulu and with HBO Max launching soon, no way Disney gives them something to market as a premier. Professor
If I can wildly speculate with my tin foil hat on... Could finally releasing New Mutants on 8/28 just be an offering to theaters? In that, theaters are not happy about the idea of a same day digital release. New Mutants is clearly a movie that Disney doesn't really care about. But it is a finished movie. So, make nice with the theaters and give it them. And if no one goes (for legal/health reasons or general disinterest), Disney can claim 'we tried, but it was too soon'. Thus giving them a reason to same day digital a film they care about, ie Black Widow.
