Favorite/Best by Region: France

Recommended Posts

Thought this might be fun, considering how well people responded to the Favorite/Best threads by decade the other year. I chose by region rather than by country since I don't see many people responding to one devoted to Denmark, Myanmar, or Kenya, but ones devoted to Scandinavia, Southeast Asia, or sub-Saharan Africa might have potential.

We can discuss favorite French actors, directors, films in English set in France, etc. as well, but to start off, my favorite film in French set in France is Elevator to the Gallows (Ascenseur pour l'échafaud). The best I've seen so far is Hate (La Haine).

Honorable Mentions: Amelie, Joyeux Noel, Untouchables, 13 Tzameti

A L'Interieurs, Les Martyrs and Haute Tension changed modern horror cinema. Love them all in a different way.

Les Diabolique (1955) is pretty amazing too.

Un Chien Andalou is my everything.

Also: L'age D'or and City of Lost Children.

There are roughly a million others I could name.  My favorite country for film, ever.

L'Atalante has the best love scene in cinema; Jean-Pierre Léaud gives one of its best performances in The 400 Blows

Jean Renoir plays the best character in his own masterpiece, The Rules of the Game.

Few directors have an 8 year creative streak on the level of Jean-Luc Godard's New Wave period from 1960-67.

I've yet to see a film by Agnes Varda that I dislike, she's criminally underrated.

I like Cocteau's Belle y la Bete (Beauty and the Beast).

Un Chien Andalou is my everything.

I am not cultured enough that I can ever get past the eyeball scene from that movie.

"Cultured Motherfuckers" is actually the name of our jam band.

We might not be the most technically proficient, but when we find that groovin' riff, we hump it to death!

I almost cannot believe this thread exists on these boards.

Almost.

You're welcome.
