I remember thinking he was a bear or a mouse or something. Yeah, he's definitely an aardvark. In the first Arthur book, he looked like an actual aardvark. As time went by, he evolved into...guy with ears on top of his head. I think Brain was a bear though. I don't know if they had mice, but Mr. Ratburn was, in all probability, a rat.
