Reboots Terminator Variety reports that Warner Bros. has acquired North American distribution rights to Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins, triggering an early 2008 production start for a film that seeks to reinvent the cyborg saga with a storyline to be told over a three-movie span. WB plans to distribute "Terminator Salvation" in summer 2009. The "Terminator" film franchise got a new lease on life in spring, when privately funded Halcyon and its co-CEOs Victor Kubicek and Derek Anderson teamed with Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines executive producer Moritz Borman to acquire film, merchandising and licensing rights from ex-Carolco partners Andy Vajna and Mario Kassar. Kubicek, Anderson and Borman are producing the new film, with Peter D. Graves as executive producer. WB had first right of negotiation for domestic theatrical and TV distribution rights because the studio played the same role on 2003's Jonathan Mostow-directed "Terminator 3." The producers said that the new film will carry the size and scale of "Terminator 3," and will have an event-sized budget. Sony Pictures Entertainment, which distributed "Terminator 3" in most overseas territories, is expected to get first crack at a reprise. Several other territories are spoken for, including Japan, where Toho-Towa is expected to distribute once again. A screenplay has been completed by "Terminator 3" writers John Brancato and Michael Ferris, and the financiers and studio are close to locking a director. While industry buzz has Charlie's Angels director McG as the odds-on favorite for the assignment, the producers said no final decision had yet been made. "This is set in the future, in a full-scale war between Skynet and humankind," Anderson told the trade. Borman said: "The third film was really the conclusion of what happened in the 'now.' You will find the most-loved characters, but the intention here is to present a fresh new world and have this be the first of a trilogy." The producers said it wasn't yet clear whether Arnold Schwarzenegger will be back for his fourth appearance in the franchise that launched his movie career. "T3" was the last film in which he starred before becoming governor of California. "We've left it open for him to maybe do a cameo," Borman said. Also following the link, Harry claims that WB tried to pull his site to stop the news coming out. He then goes on the defend McG, which isn't good, but still, I'm getting chills just thinking about how awesome this could be. I enjoyed the movie a fair bit, my point is the character Bale played was the default leader of the human resistance, so a similar character. She will join Christian Bale, Sam Worthington and Anton Yelchin in the "Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins," which is set for a summer 2009 release via Warner Bros. Bloodgood will play a no-nonsense and battle-hardened member of the resistance who is carrying a lot of guilt over surviving the nuclear holocaust. This brings up the Die Hard 4 argument again since that's what they are basing this on. Why go PG-13 now? The series has grossed over a billion dollars as R-rated films. When Die Hard was PG-13ed it ceased feeling like a Die Hard movie. You can defend the film and that's fine, but I've not spoken to one person yet who has said it was a better film for being PG-13. They might have accepted it and moved on, enjoyed it for what it is, but no one can explain to me how it benefited the series being PG-13. That's the same way I feel about any R series being pussified. Imagine if the next Nightmare on Elm Street or Friday the 13th went PG-13. Dan Posted May 6, 2008 Report Share Posted May 6, 2008 I think that as Hollywood moves away from ticket sales being the driving force behind a movie's profitability, and towards DVD sales, then R rated movies will make more and more of a comeback. I can (from a business standpoint) understand why studios weere moving towards PG-13, now that theater owners are being made to adhere more closely to the ratings system, but when DVD sales make that a non-issue, these movies will be able to stay true to their R-rated origins. All three had a US boxoffice total of around 80-85 million, but Alien only cost 9, Aliens cost 17 and AVP cost 70 million. The 18 rated films were far bigger financial success, not least because they were acutal good films and thus have made millions more in the decades since thier release. How much will AVP made 25 years from now? Take into account the worldwide takings and Alien made a cool 30 million more total. They also came out in an era when a thirteen-year-old kid could buy a ticket to an R-rated movie without any difficulty. Theater owners here came under a lot of fire for that a few years back. "Alright so the main character is a cyborg named Marcus. For some background, Marcus was a criminal who was executed in 2003. He donated his body to Project Angel which was involved with SkyNet. They take his body and make a terminator out of him so he's a terminator skeleton but has living muscle/skin and a beating heart too. At the end of the movie John Connor is fighting a T800 model 101 and loses. He dies and the top resistance people come up with a plan to help the resistance keep fighting on. The resistance feels that it's important to keep the image or idea that John Connor is still alive so the resistance keeps going. If it's a T-800 Model 101 that causes John's death, doesn't that mean Arnold HAS to have a cameo, since that's his model? He has said he'd like to make a cameo, but it wouldn't happen until the next two films.
