JackFetch
The live-action Akira is getting close to becoming a reality. Variety reports that Warner Bros. has greenlit the project with director Jaume Collet-Serra (Unknown) attached to direct. What's more, they may have already found their leading man in TRON: Legacy star Garrett Hedlund. Famously adapted as an anime in 1988, Akira will be based on the original manga by Katsuhiro Otomo, depicting a sci-fi cyberpunk dystopia, but will relocate the action to "New Manhattan" rather than "Neo-Tokyo." Hedlund's involvement is only tentative at the moment, but he would up be for the part of the original story's Kaneda (there is not yet word on whether or not the character names will be changed). Budgeted at $90 million, Akira could shoot as early as February of next year. http://www.superherohype.com/news/articles/168692-akira-gets-the-green-light-
Stavros
Is it going to be called Akira? Are there actually going to be any asian people in it?
James D.
This has "trainwreck" written all over it. Like Dragonball: Evolution-sized trainwreck.
dc20willsave
Yep. Garret Hedlund is officially playing Kaneda. I half expect them to rename the character Kane any moment now.
Delete
Yep. Garret Hedlund is officially playing Kaneda. I half expect them to rename the character Kane any moment now. Apparently the explanation for the Japanese names in the script is that Neo Tokyo has become the major city in the world and Japanese culture has taken over the world including America
James D.
11. The Center of the Universe Principle: Everything that is worth your attention takes place in Tokyo. If there is action that takes place elsewhere, it means that a character is going to be a foreign exchange student in the United States. Koete
It would be quite an achievement to be worse than CRASH.

Koete
The one that thought it was saying something profound about race when really it was an insulting crock of superficial bullshit.
bobobob_100
Rename the movie "Steve", take out all references to Akira, then make it a bland action movie. I see this as the only way to make this movie work. Note that i did not say good.
James D.
Having read the synopsis this has real potential to be the worst movie of all time Considering the pantheon of shitastic movies I've seen over the years, that would be something. Delete
Seems someone at Warner Bros has a brain and production has been shut down. They finally figured out the script made no sense and that 90 million dollars might not be enough money.
JackFetch
Guess what has risen from the grave? Marco J. Ramirez, the scribe who will be co-showrunning the second season of Netflix’s Daredevil, will write Akira, the Warner Bros. long-in-the-works adaptation of the Japanese manga classic. Dan
They're talking to Taiki Waitita (Thor: Ragnarok) to direct.
Donomark
Akira has a love action movie is unfilmable. Its impact is measured chiefly in terms of anime and animation. The story is sci-fi cool, but just imagine all that creativity and kinetic energy from both the movie and the manga being washed out by a Big-Named actor and the merchandise for said property replacing the merchandise for the original property.
