Microsoft statement on death of HD-DVD

“We do not believe the recent reports about HD DVD will have any material impact on the Xbox 360 platform or our position in the marketplace. As we’ve long stated, we believe it is games that sell consoles and Xbox 360 continues to have the largest next-gen games library with the most exclusives and best selling games in the industry. We will wait until we hear from Toshiba before announcing any specific plans around the Xbox 360 HD DVD player. HD DVD is one of the several ways we offer a high definition experience to consumers and we will continue to give consumers the choice to enjoy digital distribution of high definition movies and TV shows directly to their living room along with playback of the DVD movies they already own.”

There are some that have been saying since the beginning that Microsoft wasn't really behind HD-DVD, but wanted to push a format war to move the dissatisfied people to digital downloads like Live Marketplace. I don't know if that's true, but they did manage to mention it in this press release.

Personally, I think a Blu-Ray player add-on will be out in a couple months, and then possibly a sku with a built in Blu-Ray will be out by the end of the year. They will still not use them for gaming though, since they would eliminate 12 million older consoles from playing any newer games on a Blu-Ray disc if they did that. It would have been a lot different if they had gone with putting an HD-DVD in every system to start with though, and putting their games on the format. I think Sony would have gone bankrupt if they didn't win this war.

Edit: Toshiba finally announced they are ceasing production on HD-DVD. Read the press release.

so Blu- Ray won the who's better HD or Blu-Ray debate?

No, they won the "who's going to survive" debate. HD-DVD was a cheaper medium to produce and the quality, as far as movies go, is pretty goddamn identical. Blu-Ray won because of the PS3, really.
