Escape of the Living Dead 2011

Recommended Posts

I just found out that John Russo, co-creator of Night of the Living Dead(1968) has written a script for a new sequel. For more info on this story go to:

After the success of Night of the Living Dead, George Romero and John Russo had a falling out. Since "Night" was made available for public distribution Russo and Romero had fights about who deserved more of the profits.

In the end, they came to an agreement and Romero agreed to continue his series without using the "Living Dead" title(thus, Dawn, Day, Land and Diary of the Dead). While Russo will continue his own set of zombie films(Return of the Living Dead series).

Now Russo has decided to continue the series of sorts with Escape of the Living Dead(set to be released in 2011). One actor in particular that's already cast is Tony Todd(who was in Romero/Savini remake of Night of the Living Dead in 1990).

It looks like we will have a 3rd set of films to watch that follow the original "Night" film.

George Romero Series:

Night of the Living Dead(1968)

Dawn of the Dead(1978)

Day of the Dead(1985)

Night of the Living Dead(1990-Wrote only. Directed by Tom Savini)

Land of the Dead(2005)

Diary of the Dead (2008)

John Russo Series:{NOTE Russo only wrote and produced these films)

Night of the Living Dead(1968)--Co-Wrote

Return of the Living Dead(1985)---creator, producer and writer of novel

Return of the Living Dead II (1988)--not involved

Return of the Living Dead III (1993)--not involved

Night of the Living Dead (1990)--co-screenplay writer

Night of the Living Dead: 30th Anniversary Edition(Director of New Scenes, co-writer)

Children of the Living Dead (2001)---Executive Producer

Night of the Living Dead 3-D(2006)-Co-Sreenplay Writer

Return of the Living Dead: Necropolis (2005)---not imvolved

Return of the Living Dead: Rave to the Grave (2005)---not involved

Escape of the Living Dead(2011)

Remakes without Russo or Romero involved at all:

Dawn of the Dead(2004)-(The Romero original only provides the setting)

Day of the Dead(2008)-(Romero Original only Provides part of the happening, military)

Now I believe there is a 4th set of films that started when Dario Argento released his cut of Dawn of the Dead(1978) in the UK entitled Zombi, there was a Zombi 2.

Russo did not do any writing on NoTLD 3D, he's listed there because elements of his original script were adapted.

The novel he wrote is similar to RotLD only in name. Funnily enough, he novelized the movie that took the name from his novel. Weird...

Dario Argento, producer on Dawn of the Dead, did re-cut the film and release it in Europe as Zombi and it was Lucio Fulci who directed Zombi 2 (known as "Zombie" in North America). If my avatar is any indication, I am discussing this film along with several others by my favourite Italian director in a coming episode.

"Night of the Living Dead 3-D" was absolutely horrible. A bunch of burned-out stoners get killed. Yee-haw.

Now, had the burned-out stoners been ecoterrorists it would have been entertaining.

"In today's news, an ELF cell was wiped out by zombies while planning to burn down some homes in a development near the lake. Toxiology reports showed high levels of marijuana in their blood, leading to speculation that the ecoterrorists could have escaped had they not been stoned out of their minds."
