DC Universe Online

What a week, huh? From BRIGHTEST DAY to a new LEGION ongoing series, we’ve rolled out a truckload of news to keep fans chatting for at least the next hour or so. But there’s more. Seriously.

History was made in the DCU a few years back with the launch of 52, a weekly, year-long series filling in the gap of time between INFINITE CRISIS and ONE YEAR LATER. Since then, the weekly series has been a staple for the DCU. So what could we possibly do to keep the things fresh and exciting?

How about a weekly series set in the world of DC UNIVERSE ONLINE, SONY ONLINE ENTERTAINMENT’S upcoming Massive Multiplayer Online Action Game? Well, there you have it.

DC UNIVERSE: LEGENDS will run weekly and exist in the same world as the game. Can there be a more perfect companion? Probably not.

Okay, that was pretty random.

This is basically how all MMOs work. They're basically like the Death Stars of the gaming world: take forever to build, and then either become awesome and blow up planets or get shattered to smithereens because of design flaws.

That was one of the greatest analogies I've ever read.

"SOE is dedicated to delivering the highest quality game experiences possible," says John Smedley, President of Sony Online Entertainment. "'DC Universe Online' is the first game of its kind, and a truly massive undertaking -- the first action MMO set in the DC Universe, the first MMO on the PlayStation 3, and the first time the entire DC Universe will be accessible to the millions of fans who are eagerly anticipating its release. As the game heads into external beta testing, this extra time will allow us to address community feedback in a meaningful way. When we get deeper into external beta, we'll be able to share more information regarding the new launch date."

SOE has also revealed new details regarding the beta program. Players with VIP key cards and those having registered at the DCUO website will receive access on a priority basis starting as early as next week. As an added thank you, everyone that has already pre-ordered the game, and those who do so by November 15, 2010, are assured access to beta by November 30 (North America only).

Anyone pre-ordering the game after November 15 will gain beta access one week prior to the launch date and will be able to participate in the special beta ending event entitled Battle of the Legends with the rest of the beta participants. As an additional bonus, all beta participants will be recognized post release with a special emblem for their character when the game goes live. Beginning October 7, 2010, instructions on how to qualify and receive your pre-order beta key, visit: www.dcuniverseonline.com/betakey.

Those wishing to register for beta without pre-ordering have until 11:59pm PST tonight. This is a general queue and does not assure access.

Lastly, due to overwhelming demand from the community, SOE is pleased to announce that a Collector's Edition for the PlayStation 3 will also be released (North America only), which includes the same items contained in the PC version announced earlier this year - the DCUO Batman statue, the limited edition Art of DC Universe Online art book, the DCUO Legends Issue #0 comic book with a Jim Lee variant cover, the DCUO Prestige comic presentation of the DCUO back-story and the limited edition Jim Lee-drawn poster Version of the Issue #0 comic book variant cover.

Delayed til next year, but beta coming soon.

Sony Online Entertainment LLC (SOE) today announced that the highly anticipated online action game DC Universe™ Online (DCUO), has reached gold master status and will be available at retail outlets worldwide on the PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system and PC on January 11, 2011. DCUO, licensed by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment on behalf of DC Entertainment, will be the first online game based in the DC Universe, the first MMO on PlayStation 3, and the first time DC Universe Online will be accessible to the millions DC Universe fans.

"Creating DC Universe Online has been a massive undertaking, and we're excited to be that much closer to launch," said Christopher Cao, Game Director of DCUO for Sony Online Entertainment. "We're grateful to our beta players for providing us invaluable feedback in these final stages that has enabled us to put the finishing touches on a fun and exciting experience when the game launches in January."

DC Universe Online will carry an anticipated retail price of US$59.99 for PlayStation 3 and US$49.99 for PC in North America. The game includes one 30-day game membership, with monthly subscriptions available thereafter for US$14.99. For customers playing the PC version of the game, DCUO will be included in SOE's all-in-one Station Access subscription. Sony Online Entertainment expects to update the game regularly with new episodes featuring iconic DC Comics characters, new instances and major in-game events.

As a traditional action-based MMO that combines fast-paced, twitch-based combat with an interactive physics system to deliver a new and unique gameplay experience, DC Universe Online brings the DC Universe to life, allowing players to create their own superheroes - or villains - and join forces with their favorite DC Comics characters such as Superman, Batman and The Joker to aid in saving - or destroying - the universe.

I think it's pretty much lost most of the momentum it had.
