Season 7 was the first to be filmed and then have a laugh track added instead of having a live audience. This lead to some negative feedback on the track in places, because the performances weren't timed correctly to allow for the laughter, which lead to some lines being obscured. Partially as a result the VHS copies featured several extended episodes that did not feature the much-despised laugh track, but for some reason didn't remove it on all of them.

I quite like the Chloe Annett Kochanski because she's clearly a different one to the original, she brings some fun elements. Without the audience or Rummer she's a presence on the ship that can be disgusted by the way they all live, but of course provokes exactly the opposite response from Lister that Arnie did. Clearly she's no replacement for Rimmer, but stuff like Pride & Prejudice world makes her worthwhile.

Plus Chloe Annette starred in the all time classic science fiction show Crime Traveller. So that's a plus.

I think I'm just miffed that they replaced Rimmer with an endless whiner that now dictates the entirety of the plot. Rimmer was the glue of this show, and in my mind is the true main character, even over Lister. Granted, I'm happy they stopped doing Monster of the Week, but they've sort of stopped doing much of anything.

Plus, the other Kochanski was cuter and the series 3 retcon they did to their relationship never sat right with me.

The way they got rid of Rimmer was great though, having to replace the exact opposite version of himself from another reality, that was good. Have you got to the episode where Lister starts to miss Rimmer? And what were your thoughts on Rimmerworld?

The Expendables: The craziest action movie I've seen a long damn time. It was just always fucking on. It's not the best movie ever made, but as a movie you can sit down, watch and just enjoy, it was fucking great. I loved the pier scene.

Long Kiss Goodnight: I do not remember this being so cheesy. It was fun, but half the film just felt like a bad TV movie, that somehow got Geena Davies to say fuck a lot, and break peoples necks.

Million Dollar Baby: First time I've seen this, and I really enjoyed it. It really was a great story, and was well paced and just kept my attention throughout.

Bringing out the dead: I've come the realisation you can't really name a bad John Goodman role, just a bad movie that John Goodman is a part of. This was just bland. It doesn't really grab your interest, and you're just left watching, and wondering when will I actually give a damn about what is going on in this movie?

Watched Robocop for the first time. It's fun, but it's hard to get into it when I keep waiting for the badguy to call someone Dumbass. I liked it though and am now looking forward to a remake. Keep the story the same and just use modern effects. Could be awesome. Also started Robocop 2. That is the shits.

Do yourself a favor and ignore Robocop 3. It will be tempting but you will not regret avoiding that... I can't even call it a movie. Collection of images strung together at a rate of about 30 frames a second?

Alright. Seen the complete run of Red Dwarf now. Some thoughts.

- Favourite series was 2, easily. All of the concepts were still fresh, Rimmer and Lister were the nucleus of the plot and the writing was at its absolute best. Even the worst episode, Kryten, is really good.

- Favourite episodes were Better Than Life and Queeg, both, funnily enough, from series 2.

- Least favourite series, it's a tie between 7 and 8. What should have been the crowning moment of awesome for the entire show (Kochanski's return) ended up being the thing that grinded the show to a halt and series 8 really only shined an unnecessary light on the fact that Lister didn't develop one bit in the previous six years.

- Worst episode, either Duct Soup or Pete. One exemplifies everything I loathe about series 7, the other is a five minute gag stretched to an hour.

- Favourite character, Rimmer. Human, hologram, Ace, they're all awesome. I honestly believe that he is the true main character of the show and the scant episodes that he's absent from are hollow because of it.

- Least favourite character, Kochanski. Chloë Annett is a lovely lass, but her character was written as an unrelatable git that served literally no purpose other than to cocktease Lister for a dozen episodes. And after all that, they never even got together! Not to mention she promptly forgets disowning him at the end of Krytie TV and never brings it up again.

- Seeing as watching Back to Earth is what prompted me to go through the whole show, I re-watched it with all of my new-found knowledge.

What... in the FUCK is this? Kochanski's dead? Holly's gone? Rimmer's a hologram again? Is this the old Rimmer, back from his Ace duties, or is this the Rimmer that kicked Death in the balls and somehow died again anyway? So Lister and Kochanski got back together, but then she faked her own death to dump him... and none of this EVER happened on screen? Am I ever going to find out what the fuck was going on with the wedding in Stasis Leak? Are they just planning on retconning all of this with another superfast scroll of text at the beginning of series X? I liked this story better when it was called Back to Reality. This should have never ever ever ever ever been made.

All in all, a fantastic show for the first 6 series. Infinitely rewatchable and just miles of fun. If the show had ended at Stoke Me a Clipper, I'd be prepared to call it my favourite TV program ever. The problem is that they ran out of ideas and just kept going. And when the old girl fell, she fell HARD. The peaks of those early stories are only matched by the valleys they find themselves crawling in near the end. Very interested to see where they go from here, if nothing else.

Okay, I realize that my last comment was slightly dickish, but if you can't find joy in something as smart and funny as Fargo, or in the amazing performances of Frances McDormand, William H. Macy, Steve fucking Buscemi and Peter Stormare, I actively pity you.

William H Macy was awesome, he's never given a bad performance in the films I've seen him in, Steve Buscemi was great as a snivelling twirp hustler/robber/general murderous scumbag, and Frances McDormand was great as well, she was incredibly likeable. I didn't say the film was shit, I said I don't think I will go out of my way to see it again. Had I came on here and said "It's fucking shite." then you'd have a point, but I didn't, I said honestly, it's not a film I want to see twice.

My favourite scene was William H Macy preparing to make the phone call about his wife being kidnapped, and Steve Buscemi trying to bribe the officer, and arguing with the guy at the carpark about changing his mind about parking their, and refusing to pay, just after he stole someone else's license plates. However, what bothered me was just the lucky ending, and just how the film concludes, and everything is just sorted out very quickly.

Honestly, it doesn't matter what the film is, I could make this argument for half the movies you've posted about. It genuinely seems like you're underwhelmed for the sake of being underwhelmed, anf it's just tiring. I don't understand why someone who doesn't enjoy film regularly subjects himself to it.

Austen, compile for me a list of movies that you think are special.

I'm genuinely interested and I imagine it wouldn't take long.

Alright, off the top of my head, this is what I've came up with:

Toy Story 1-3, Monsters Inc, Terminator 2, Aliens 1-2, Memento, Evil Dead 2, The Dark Knight, The Godfather 1-2, Gran Torino, Casino, Taxi Driver, Goodfellas, Sleepers. Star Wars 4-6, Wall-E. Batman, Superman, True Lies, Total Recall, Robocop, American Psycho, eXistenZ, The Big Lebowski, Dumb and Dumber, Big Trouble in Little China, Dirty Harry, Back to the Future 1-2, Reservoir Dogs, The Usual Suspects. Rocky 1-4 and Balboa. American Beauty. The Shawshank Redemption. Scarface, Carlito's way, Heat, Dog Day Afternoon, One Hour Photo, Pleasantville, Good Morning Vietnam, Insomnia, A Bronx Tale, This Boys Life. Awakenings. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Bicentennial Man, What Dreams May Come. Mrs Doubtfire. Aladdin, The Lion King, Good Morning Vietnam, Dogma.

These are the films that I am able to come up with on such short notice. Likely half the films are panned by critics, but I enjoy them, and at the end of the day, the main thing you are supposed to take away from any form of entertainment, is enjoyment, and feeling like your time was well spent on whatever it was that you were doing.

Okay. I've concluded that your taste in film is comparable to a pregnant woman's taste in food. There is simply no reason to try and make sense of it.

I'm going to point out that I think you guys are being a little harsh on Austen as well as pointing out that Austen's list comprises a fair amount of my top 200 of films. Austen's taste just happen to be different than some of ours. It happens. I mean, I honestly don't like The Godfather at all. It happens, people don't like certain movies. The point is that everyone probably has some movie they dislike that is commonly on the list of movies most people love.

I spotted that Alison Brie GQ deal. Homina homina.

Can't disagree much with your analysis of Dwarf Dubs, although my personal favourite series is probably 6. That's probably at least partially because it was the first season I watched as it was coming out as opposed to in reruns or on tapes.

I also rather like Duct Soup. It's one of those really cheaply made episodes that goes with a premise and really sticks to it, and I think it works. It's pretty funny.

I think I have less of a problem with 7 than 8 because 8 fundamentally changed the nature of the show. They didn't have much power over Chris Barrie wanting to leave but they easily could have made the return to Red Dwarf itself better than this. It just turned into a sci-fi Porridge.

If you want more I'd advise checking out the books. Much like The Hitch-hikers Guide to the Galaxy the story is told differently in each medium, it's an alternate universe version. Infinity Welcomes Careful Drivers follows Lister from before he even joins the crew (don't worry, there's plenty of Rimmer), Better Than Life hugely expands on the TV show in a seriously poignant way and somewhat oddly each creator wrote their own 3rd book, Last Human and Backwards, each is worth checking out.

Besides, Red Dwarf has the worst continuity of any show ever, even just cosmetically.

Which is a big part of the reason everything after series 2 drives me up a wall on one level or another.
