Random wrestling thoughts

Finished up the Vice documentary series The Wrestlers.  Host by Damian Abraham, the show goes around the globe exploring the non-WWE world of wrestling.  I quite enjoyed this.  I generally have a problem with documentaries on subjects I know.  And three of the first four episodes (Indy talent, MVP & Death Match) fall into this: I gained very little new information.  Yet, I understand why they went with these first for a wide audience.  Easing them in with something familiar to a WWE.

But when they leave the United States, this series shines.  2 in Mexico (Indy Lucha & Exóticos) & 2 in Japan (Stardom & DDT) went into topics that I knew on a surface level, but went deeper.  The three best episodes (Fighting Cholitas of Bolivia, Canada's Reserves & Voodoo Witchcatch in Congo) show wrestling in ways that I had no idea existed and was fantastic.

Seriously, if you only watch one episode, the Congo episode in a must.

My one and only SummerSlam prediction: Matt Riddle will interfere in the Goldberg / Ziggler match, costing Goldberg the victory. This will help Ziggler, be Riddle's call-up, turn him heel, and setup a match between Riddle and Goldberg at WrestleMania 36.

While that would be awesome, it won't happen. WWE Brass isn't happy with Riddle for running his mouth, so unless it's a brilliant work, I expect to see Riddle stay in NXT for a while. Which is fine by me. After Gargano, Cole and Ciampa leave, Riddle and Dream will rule that joint. Maybe Keith Lee too.

Ah, I was coming in here to talk about that very thing. He's insistent on retiring Brock and Goldberg. So now I'm thinking they're going to have Riddle constantly mock / call out Goldberg across various platforms (Twitter, streams, NXT), all while Goldberg ignores him. This will tick off Riddle, who'll go after Goldberg (maybe in the Rumble), setting up their WrestleMania match. It could turn Riddle heel, but he's partway there with his cocky attitude.

I went back and watched Orton pitching a fit after Kofi messed up a spot in 2009, and wow was Orton unprofessional. He's the one who should have been pushed down the card, not Kofi.

Making a mistake is one thing. A total lack of professionalism is something else.

Watched Raw last night and the crowd turned heel on Natalya last week. Chanting "thank you Sasha" was cold.

Not sure what WWE expected. They had to know that Sasha Banks was going to get a huge face pop when she returned. The heel turn happened way too fast, and was always destined to backfire. They should have saved that for at least a week or two.

Also, where was Seth Rollins while Becky Lynch was being beaten with a steel chair? If this were real, any dude would run out to protect his girlfriend. He wouldn't hit Sasha to stop the attack, but he would stand in between her and his girlfriend. This is a huge plot hole. If Lynch can run out to save Rollins from being cheated out of his title, Rollins can save Lynch from a beating.

The greatest picture from last night. You can look right above Alexander's elbow pad to see my arms up, booing the shit out of Sami Zayn being jobbed out in four minutes and my darling bride telling me to shut the fuck up.

Stayed up to watch AEW live and got home from the casino showing it at 5am.

Pretty good card from top to bottom, with only the main event falling flat. I agree with the choice of winner, but with a caveat:

Spoiler

Jericho has the name value that AEW needs whilst getting its TV show off the ground, but you need better guys than Page to get a really good match out of Jericho, given his age. I think Page will get his time, but he really didn't click with Jericho in this match.

Also, I like the fact AEW has pyro for entrances. It spooked the Rhodes' dog though, which was a bad thing.
