James Denton, Christina Hendricks and Anthony LaPaglia are lending their pipes to Warner Bros.' "All-Star Superman," the animated adaptation of one of the most acclaimed comics of the past decade.

"All-Star" is the 10th DC Comics story line to be turned into an original PG-13 movie by Warner Premiere, DC Entertainment, Warner Bros. Animation and Warner Home Video. The comic mini-series has won three Eisner Awards, two Harvey Awards and three Eagle Awards.

Written by Grant Morrison and drawn by Frank Quitely, the story begins with the Man of Steel (Denton) oversaturated by radiation during a rescue mission near the sun, accelerating the degeneration of his cells. Knowing that he has a limited time before he dies, Superman sets out on a journey that sees him revealing his secret to Lois Lane (Hendricks), giving Lex Luthor (LaPaglia) an epiphany on humanity and ensuring the safety of Earth for when he is gone.

Also in the cast are Ed Asner as Perry White and Frances Conroy as Ma Kent along with Linda Cardellini, Arnold Vosloo and Matthew Gray Gubler.

Bruce Timm is exec producing, and Sam Liu, who helmed the DC animated film "Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths," is directing. Dwayne McDuffie, a comics scribe who also penned "Crisis on Two Earths," wrote the script.

The film is due to be released in the spring.

That sounds really great.

So, anyway, WightKing may or may not have threatened to summon an army of undead corpses to attack me unless I posted his thoughts on S/B:A.

This one might have the best animation yet in a DCUOAM (god, that acronym is too long...) movie. The detail and fluidity are just insane. The character models look off in the few pre-release stills we've seen, but in the actual movie the characters look really good.

The voice cast is all really excellent with the exception of Darkseid. Michael Ironside completely defined that character's voice, so it's hard to hear anyone else's and have it work. Still, though, by the end, you mostly forget about it. Darkseid is still Darkseid, despite him sounding different.

There's some minor alterations to the comic's story. You can almost see the writers sitting there reading the comic and saying "Wait, what? That doesn't make sense. We're changing that."

Though they still have that terrible Wonder Woman-attacking-Kara-in-a-park thing, which is stupid beyond belief.

The plot moves really fast. Almost too fast. They jump straight from place to place, skipping periods of time along the way. If I was a non-comics fan and didn't already understand the DC universe (or hadn't already read the comic), I can imagine I might've been a little confused.

There's a lot more development of Kara's character than was there in the comic; it's nice. Also, Harbinger/Lyla has a much bigger role. I got kind of a constant geeky glee from seeing her appear in animated form, wearing the same exact costume from Crisis on Infinite Earths.

I won't spoil it, but there's an all-female fight later in the movie that may seriously be the best-choreographed fight scene thus far in ANY DC animated production. My jaw hit the floor several times while watching. It's just amazing.

Overall, it was really pretty good. A thousand times better than Public Enemies, at least.

About twenty minutes in, lving everything about this except Batman and Superman's faces, which are both ugly and wildly inconsistent. They're much more careful with Supergirl.

Voice-wise I really like Summer Glau, I completely forgot it was her, she's ideal in the role.

edit- Eww, Darkseid's voice sucks ass. Couldn't they find someone with a little more natural bass? Darkseid is an evil god, his voice alone should fill me with dread.

OK, condensing an issue-by-issue plot into one movie really exposes the weaknesses in this story. Characters are needlessly confrontational, pointless asides get drawn out, new characters just appear with no introduction and somehow we're supposed to care. It's a real mess.

The animation and voice construction is a mess too, scene to scene can often be jarring in places, and some speaking scenes seem really disjointed.

Superman waits until a load of Amazons die before deciding to end the fight? Douche. I guess ending the fight by vaporising everything at least makes sure the Amazons aren't burdened by y'know, caring for the wounded or giving their dead a dignified burial.

Batman kills. Speaks for itself there.

The Doomsdays vs Amazon's fight had some really shitty moments. Apparently the Doomsdays are perfectly happy to let them retreat slowly in a line, all they want to do is pose like they're cavity creeps or something.

Superman punches fire, repeatedly. Oh, and they added a punch sound effect. Take that physics!

Because I don't want to be all negative, I have to say that watching Wonder Woman fight is still a thing of beauty, there Barda & WW vs Furies fight is really good, right up there with WW's solo movie.

Oh, and the final Darkseid fight is AWESOME.

It's a shame because there's a lot of great individual moments, but this is a terrible adaptation of a story. They should have rewritten vast chunks of it instead of slavishly sticking to the original. This wasn't fucking Watchmen, not everything in this story needed to be a sacred calf.

He didn't know he could vaporize them that easily until that point. Doomsday is, after all, the monster that killed him once. Normally, even a heat vision overload like that wouldn't work. Also, his heat vision is often tied into his anger; he only unleashes it AFTER he's brought to the brink.

Batman kills. Speaks for itself there.

Eh? Don't remember that... Are we talking about the Doomsday clones? 'Cause I don't think that counts. Neither do para-demons.

I agree about the WW kidnapping thing, but the rest I think makes perfect sense to me.

To be fair, I don't know how you'd replicate Quitely's art style satisfactorily.

An attempt at using designs that looked a little like his would have been nice. I understand Quitely's art is complex, but, this is just so generic. I'm still excited, just a little let down.

No, I totally get where you're coming from. I mean, All Star Superman is one of my all time favorite comic books, so I'd much rather it be a mini-series or a bigger budgeted animated film with more attention to the art style. I'm just trying to stay optimistic about it.

Then again, how would you actually make a trailer about All-Star Superman? Wouldn't be all that exciting.

So...you have to make it look like a generic superhero action film because that's exciting?

Because that sells DVDs, yes. It's a rule with trailers: blow the audience's mind with crazy action.

All-Star Supes' best moments, for the most part, were the quiet ones. The suicide intervention and all that. Making a trailer that accurately represented the movie wouldn't likely be that great of a trailer, since it wouldn't have much time to really show what made the comic story so special.
