Well, they never told the story of Doc Connors losing his arm in the other films, or did the story of the lizard, even though it was rumored for every film, so there's that. Also, they could go into more detail about the Spider that bit Peter, rather than just having a passing line about it, and how it looked the same as Peter's future costume. Stavros Posted December 19, 2011 Report Share Posted December 19, 2011 Thing is the last 3 films were classic Spidey going in, you get some high-school, the Bugle, the Osbournes, all that stuff that's right there on the surface of the concept. In order to differentiate this one, to make it worth telling just ten years later, it has to come at it from a fresher angle. Otherwise it might as well be in continuity. It's not like this is a Dark Knight level shift, but it's pretty seismic as far as the concept allows. I'm not sure how well the large changes in the basic characters involved and the additional mystery plot will go, but I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt because what I've seen so far looks good, I like Marc Webb a lot and I appreciate how tough their task is coming off the back of a largely beloved franchise (the first two films at least). Richard Parker's former partner (that being Eddie Brock, Sr.) is already dead at the beginning of the series and the Parkers' death is because of something he does, while Mary Jane is Peter's first and predominant love interest throughout the series. More importantly, though, the part about Peter "trying to figure out who he is and how he got to be the person he is today" is not an ongoing theme in that series, at least not in the earlier books. I'm not as psyched for this as I was for the first round of films or Avengers or Dark Knight but it could well be the sleeper hit. I like the cast and director immensly, it's just the story elements that seem atypical of Spider-man. The mystery deal could be good, could be bad, could be nothing. We'll see.
