Then they should put "You only think you know the story" or something else that makes sense. "The Untold Story" makes it sound like it's a side story from the last movie series.

Well, they never told the story of Doc Connors losing his arm in the other films, or did the story of the lizard, even though it was rumored for every film, so there's that. Also, they could go into more detail about the Spider that bit Peter, rather than just having a passing line about it, and how it looked the same as Peter's future costume.

From the official website:

The Story

Like most teenagers his age, Peter is trying to figure out who he is and how he to be the person he is today. In his journey to put the pieces of his past together he uncovers a secret that his father held... a secret that will ultimately shape his destiny as Spider-Man. This is the first in a series of movies that tells a different side of the Peter Parker story. On July 3rd, 2012, the untold story begins.

Peter Parker

Ever since Peter's parents disappeared 13 years ago, he has struggled to find his purpose in life. Now, on the brink of unlocking the mystery about what happened to them, he must face the ultimate challenge - one that has been created within the laboratories of Oscorp.

Gwen Stacy

Smart, charismatic and rebellious, Gwen is the chief intern at Oscorp, a position she takes very seriously. But her life takes a complicated turn as she watches both her boyfriend, Peter, and her mentor, Dr. Connors, undergo radical transformations.

Captain Stacy

An esteemed police officer for over twenty years, Captain Stacy is the public face of the NYPD who leads the department's investigation into Spider-Man's vigilantism. The only thing Captain Stacy vows to protect more than the city is his family - and particularly his only daughter, Gwen.

Dr. Curt Connors

One of the leading scientific minds, Dr. Connors attempts to engineer a revolutionary regeneration serum to help re-grow limbs and human tissue. His motivations are unclear as to why he elects to be the first human test subject - but what becomes evident is that something goes horribly wrong.

Thing is the last 3 films were classic Spidey going in, you get some high-school, the Bugle, the Osbournes, all that stuff that's right there on the surface of the concept. In order to differentiate this one, to make it worth telling just ten years later, it has to come at it from a fresher angle. Otherwise it might as well be in continuity. It's not like this is a Dark Knight level shift, but it's pretty seismic as far as the concept allows. I'm not sure how well the large changes in the basic characters involved and the additional mystery plot will go, but I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt because what I've seen so far looks good, I like Marc Webb a lot and I appreciate how tough their task is coming off the back of a largely beloved franchise (the first two films at least).

Plus this one's not bothering with organic web-shooters so that's a plus. Always felt lazy.

The official synopsis:

One of the world's most popular characters is back on the big screen as a new chapter in the Spider-Man legacy is revealed in "The Amazing Spider-Man." Focusing on an untold story that tells a different side of the Peter Parker story, the new film stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Denis Leary, Campbell Scott, Irrfan Khan, with Martin Sheen and Sally Field. The film is directed by Marc Webb from a screenplay written by James Vanderbilt, based on the Marvel Comic Book by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. Laura Ziskin, Avi Arad, and Matt Tolmach are producing the film in association with Marvel Entertainment for Columbia Pictures, which will open in theaters everywhere in 3D on July 3, 2012.

"The Amazing Spider-Man" is the story of Peter Parker (Garfield), an outcast high schooler who was abandoned by his parents as a boy, leaving him to be raised by his Uncle Ben (Sheen) and Aunt May (Field). Like most teenagers, Peter is trying to figure out who he is and how he got to be the person he is today. Peter is also finding his way with his first high school crush, Gwen Stacy (Stone), and together, they struggle with love, commitment, and secrets. As Peter discovers a mysterious briefcase that belonged to his father, he begins a quest to understand his parents' disappearance – leading him directly to Oscorp and the lab of Dr. Curt Connors (Ifans), his father's former partner. As Spider-Man is set on a collision course with Connors' alter-ego, The Lizard, Peter will make life-altering choices to use his powers and shape his destiny to become a hero.

A lot of changes in the story. It also pretty much says they are doing the spy story with his parents.

So, Ultimate Spider-man, basically.

Not really. Richard Parker's former partner (that being Eddie Brock, Sr.) is already dead at the beginning of the series and the Parkers' death is because of something he does, while Mary Jane is Peter's first and predominant love interest throughout the series. More importantly, though, the part about Peter "trying to figure out who he is and how he got to be the person he is today" is not an ongoing theme in that series, at least not in the earlier books.

Looks pretty great. I'm not as psyched for this as I was for the first round of films or Avengers or Dark Knight but it could well be the sleeper hit. I like the cast and director immensly, it's just the story elements that seem atypical of Spider-man. The mystery deal could be good, could be bad, could be nothing. We'll see.
