SYFY RENEWS BEING HUMAN FOR SECOND SEASON

Supernatural Drama is Syfy's Most Female-Skewing Scripted Series Ever

New York, NY - March 17, 2011 - Syfy is ordering a second season of its new hit drama series Being Human, it was announced today by Mark Stern President of Original Content, Syfy and Co-Head of Original Content, Universal Cable Productions. Since the show's January 17 launch, premiere episodes of Being Human have averaged 1.8 million viewers making it Syfy's most successful winter season scripted series launch in 6 years. Also, with women comprising 53% of the total audience for premiere episodes, it is the channel's most female-skewing scripted series ever.

Through its first nine weeks on Syfy, and including repeat broadcasts, Being Human has been seen by 19.1 million total unique viewers.

"Being Human has proven to be a winner for Syfy on all fronts," said Stern. "Using the original format as inspiration, showrunners/writers Jeremy Carver and Anna Fricke - along with a superlative team of writers, cast, and production - have created an amazing, compelling series in its own right. We can't wait to watch Aidan, Josh and Sally continue their struggle to be human in the second season!"

Being Human stars Sam Witwer, Meaghan Rath, Sam Huntington and Mark Pellegrino and is a Muse Entertainment production in association with Zodiak USA. It is based on the acclaimed series, Being Human, created by Toby Whithouse and produced by Touchpaper Television, part of Zodiak Media Group.

In Being Human, leading everyday lives is a lot harder than it looks for three supernatural roommates - vampire Aidan (Witwer), ghost Sally (Rath) and werewolf Josh (Huntington) - who share their secrets and a Boston brownstone. Together they learn that there are fates worse than death and more to life - and the afterlife - than most "normal" humans could ever imagine.

Executive Producers are Michael Prupas (The Kennedys, Pillars of the Earth), Jeremy Carver (Supernatural) and Anna Fricke (Men in Trees, Everwood) who are both writers/showrunners, and Rob Pursey and Toby Whithouse. Irene Litinsky is series Producer and Adam Kane (The Mentalist, Heroes) is Co-Executive Producer.

Zodiak Rights hold worldwide rights to the new series.

That doesn't make me want to watch it. That just makes me wonder why it's not on CW.

Syfy brass plans to trot out on stage at Tuesday’s upfront presentation to unveil its biggest original programming slate in the the network’s 18 year history.

Two years after using the Madison Ave.-focused platform to announce its name-change (from Sci Fi to Syfy), the NBC Universal-owned network is back this year to showcase a schedule that will now boast 14 new original series and events. The news follows continued ratings gains with primetime tune-in is up 13 percent in total viewers and 7 percent in the advertiser-beloved adults 18-49 demographic thus far this quarter, compared to the same period a year earlier.

In addition to its trio of reality show pickups, which The Hollywood Reporter first reported, the net will announce a slew of scripted projects, including Alphas, which will premiere in July alongside Warehouse 13, Eureka and Haven.

The series will follow a team of ordinary citizens whose brain anomalies give them with extraordinary mental and physical abilities. With those the group, led by Dr. Leigh Rosen (David Strathairn), band together to investigate cases that the CIA, FBI and Pentagon haven’t been able to crack. Malik Yoba, Warren Christie, Laura Mennell, Ryan Cartwright and Azita Ghanizada fill out the Alphas cast, with Universal Cable Productions and BermanBraun Television on board to co-produce the series.

Among the half-hour comedy entries in development are Three Inches, about an underachiever named Walter Spackman, who is struck by lightning and develops a unique "super" power: the ability to move any object using just his mind at a distance of three inches. The project, from Fox Television Studios, is being written by Harley Peyton (Twin Peaks).

Joining Inches in the development pipeline is In the Dark, which follows a misfit group of wannabe ghost hunters. The project, which hails from Universal Cable Productions, is based on a teleplay by Michael Davidoff and Bill Rosenthal.

Filling out the trio of potential scripted efforts is Me and Lee, about a down on his luck twentysomething whose botched back surgery turns him into a bionic man. In a made-for-TV twist, he becomes a mentor to others looking to get their life in order. A Lionsgate production comes from Weeds creator Jenji Kohan.

Finally, Syfy is prepping Battlestar: Blood & Chrome, a scripted drama with Luke Pasqualino (U.K.'s Skins) and Ben Cotton (Hellcats) tapped to star. The Universal Cable Prods. production, which is set in the 10th year of the first Cylon war, comes from executive producers David Eick and Michael Taylor.

That Three Inches premise cracks me up, but I doubt it will work as a series. It would make a good short though.

The Cartoon Network is expanding its foothold in the funny business.

Network brass used Wednesday’s upfront presentation to advertisers at New York’s Lincoln Center to unveil a programming slate that includes 13 new animated series, 19 returning shows and the network’s newest live-action scripted comedy series, Level Up, which will kick off with a 90-minute original movie later this year.

The network and its parent company, Warner Bros., also announced a new multi-platform programming block with DC Entertainment, appropriately titled DC Nation, as THR reported.

What’s more, the Cartoon Network, which is coming off of a 6 percent bump in kids viewership in primetime in 2010, trotted out DreamWorks Animation boss Jeffrey Katzenberg to reveal development plans for a small-screen series adaptation of his 2010 Oscar-nominated flick, How to Train Your Dragon. The CG-animated series will occupy a half-hour block on the net’s growing schedule.

“Our commitment last year to build on the volume of broad content for our audience has paid off in solid ratings growth and renewed strength among our core 6-11 audience,” said Turner Broadcasting’s Animation president and chief operating officer Stuart Snyder. “We now have successful new shows that we can grow into the next big franchises. By partnering with premier entertainment companies like Warner Bros., DreamWorks Animation SKG and DC Entertainment, we are laying the groundwork for even further growth and expansion opportunities across the coming year.”

The Madison Avenue crowd was treated to exclusive first looks at a handful of new animated series, including The Problem Solverz and Secret Mountain Fort Awesome, which will join Adventure Time, Regular Show and MAD on Monday nights. Also on offer: sneak peaks of The Amazing World of Gumball, the stateside premiere of a new international series from the net’s U.K. production arm, and The Looney Tunes Show, an all-new series in the tradition of classic theatrical shorts from Warner Bros. Animation.

The kid-focused network also announced plans to roll out a series of animated action-adventure shows, including a new version of the popular global franchise Ben 10; an all-new remake of the action series ThunderCats, and a CG-animated follow-up to this summer’s blockbuster, Green Lantern: The Animated Series.

Lest it stop there, the Cartoon Network served up its latest venture into live-action scripted comedy with Level Up, which the net dubs “a fantastical comedy for the video game age.” The project is created and written by Derek Guiley and David Schneiderman (Chasing Liberty), with Peter Murrieta (Wizards of Waverly Place, Hope and Faith) on board to executive produce. The film will be directed and executive produced by Peter Lauer (Sons Of Tuscon, Chuck).

The network also used the opportunity to announce the renewal of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, from LucasFilm Animation Ltd., for a fourth season. It will share space on Cartoon Net’s schedule with a fourth season of animated comedy reality show Total Drama.

Showtime has ordered a second season of The Borgias, Showtime entertainment president David Nevins announced Monday.

The series, which debuted earlier this month, delivered the best ratings for a new Showtime drama series in seven years and attracted 3.71 million viewers across multiple platforms (On Demand, replays and DVR) during its premiere week.

Season-to-date, The Borgias is pacing ahead of The Tudors' fourth season, the series' highest-rated season.

Ten new episodes of The Borgias -- which stars Jeremy Irons as Rodrigo Borgia, the manipulative patriarch of the Borgia family -- will go into production this summer to air in 2012.

"The Borgias has become Sunday night appointment viewing for a broad swath of our subscribers," Nevins said in a statement. "Neil Jordan's cleverly crafted tale of a 15th century papal family has proven quickly addictive. It's a tribute to his incredible skills as an auteur and to the extraordinary cast led by Jeremy Irons that this show fits so seamlessly into our line-up of quality shows."

I hope they thank Ubisoft because if it wasn't for the last two Assassin's Creed games there wouldn't be as much interest in this story.
