Roaring to life through WBA and Studio4°C’s use of the Japanese animated artistry of anime, “ThunderCats” characters Lion-O, Mumm-Ra, Panthro, Cheetara and others will spring off the screen with realistic cat-like characteristics inconceivable in previous incarnations.

The new “ThunderCats” will appeal to viewers who have loved the characters all their lives as well as young newcomers to the franchise. A sweeping tale combining swords and science and boasting ferocious battles with the highest of stakes, the grand origin story of Prince Lion-O’s ascension to the throne – and of those who would thwart his destiny at any cost – takes on epic dimensions in this sharp new telling. As the forces of good and evil battle each other in the quest for the fabled Stones of Power, Lion-O and his champions learn valuable lessons of loyalty, honor and mortality in every episode.

“ThunderCats” is executive produced by Sam Register (“Teen Titans,” “Ben 10,” “Batman: The Brave and the Bold”). Michael Jelenic (“Batman: The Brave and the Bold,” “Wonder Woman”) and Ethan Spaulding (“Avatar: The Last Airbender”) are the producers.

After a fan posted a cellphone image of the upcoming "Thundercats" cartoon series reboot on Tuesday, the web has been taken by "Thundercats" storm, the word even hitting as a trending topic on Twitter this week. Yesterday, Warner Bros. Animation released an official look at the 'cats themselves and, today, series producer Ethan Spaulding spoke with MTV Splashpage about some of the details of the new show.

In addition to acknowledging that the new series will play up the anime roots of the Thundercats, Spaulding discussed updating the characters. Tygra, specifically, he singled out as having an updated backstory.

"The consensus was that he was the boring guy of the old show," he explains, "so we wanted to make him more interesting and gave him another dimension. But don't worry — he still has the whip."

Other updates include making Lion-O younger and Panthro older, though Spaulding promises that all changes will be organic to the new storyline. What's more, we will be seeing Snarf, WilyKit and WilyKat, though it may be some time before they're unveiled.

If you've never seen the show, then you should know that half the appeal was the opening, which I consider the greatest of any animated show ever (considering when it was made).

But yeah, Thundercats suffered a little from being in direct competition with Transformers but it was a solid sci-fi/fantasy adventure show, and was pretty damn popular when I was a kid. In the UK it occupied the gap that GI Joe left by being overly American and therefore unmarketable.

Two members of the voice cast to the upcoming "Thundercats" cartoon reboot have been named, thanks to MTV Splashpage.

Speaking with Kevin Michael Richardson (who voices Cleveland Brown Jr. and other characters on "The Cleveland Show"), the site learned that the actor will be providing the voice of Panthro and that Will Friedle (who voiced Terry McGinnis on "Batman Beyond") will step in as Lion-O. The rest of the cast is currently unconfirmed, but expect a full announcement soon.
