Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome

Holy frak!

Syfy has just ordered a new "Battlestar Galactica" series pilot.

The two-hour backdoor pilot chronicles a young William Adama's adventures during the first Cylon war.

BSG executive producer David Eick is back on board, though visionary showrunner of Syfy's first reinvention of the series, Ron Moore, is not.

The title is the very Spartacus-esque: Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome

Official description: Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome takes place in the 10th year of the first Cylon war. As the battle between humans and their creation, a sentient robotic race, rages across the 12 colonial worlds, a brash rookie viper pilot enters the fray. Ensign William Adama, barely in his 20’s and a recent Academy graduate, finds himself assigned to the newest battlestar in the Colonial fleet… the Galactica. The talented but hot-headed risk-taker soon finds himself leading a dangerous top secret mission that, if successful, will turn the tide of the decade long war in favor of the desperate fleet.

“The ‘Galactica’ universe as re-imagined by Ron Moore and David Eick is rich with possibilities and backstory,” said Syfy programming head Mark Stern. “We jumped at the chance to revisit the William Adama character and explore this exciting chapter in the BSG narrative which falls between the events of the original series and the prequel, ‘Caprica,’ currently airing on Syfy.”

“While maintaining the themes of politics, social propaganda, and the timeless question: what does it mean to be human? – ‘Blood & Chrome’ will also return us to the authentic, relentless depiction of combat and the agony and ecstasy of human-Cylon war, which was the hallmark of ‘Battlestar Galactica's’ early seasons,” said David Eick.

Still no word on whether Syfy's other BSG series, Caprica, will get a second season. Syfy says they have not yet decided, and stressed that the Blood & Chrome order will not impact the fate of Caprica (obviously with the Stargate franchise Syfy showed they're willing to have overlapping titles from the same creative universe as long as each pulls its weight).

I guess I'm not the only one that hates Caprica.

Wasn't the whole point of new BSG to leave behind the disco toasters?

Spoilers: they show up later in the series anyway. And they're kinda awesome.

Besides the fact that this is a prequel, which kicks a lot of the "what happens next?!" out the window. Because we know the 12 Colonies won and Adama lived.

Doesn't mean there's not still some great drama to be had there. Same deal goes for WWII movies.

We know Adama is going to live, sure, but we know nothing of say Ace Pilot Zelda Zurgenstern. Will she survive or will humanity die like that woman in the red dress keeps on telling her? There's drama to be found with all the characters we've never met not to mention more Adama family drama. We could meet Starbucks mother before she became an abusive drunk.

Oh man, and maybe we can finally get some explanation on just how the heck Apollo is a Cylon...

This is sad news.

Following this morning's debut of the first trailer for Syfy's two-hour "Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome," (check it out by clicking here) Deadline is reporting that, while the network will still air the pilot as a special, Syfy has elected not to go forward with the show as an ongoing televised series. They may, however, return to the notion of developing "Blood & Chrome" as it was originally conceived: as a webseries. Syfy president Mark Stern issued the following statement:

“We are actively pursuing it as was originally intended: a groundbreaking digital series that will launch to audiences beyond the scope of a television screen. The 90-minute pilot movie will air on Syfy in its entirety at a future date. Our enthusiasm for this ambitious project has not waned.”

"Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome" takes place in the 10th year of the first Cylon war. As the battle between humans and their creation, the sentient robotic Cylons, rages across the 12 colonial worlds, a young, talented fighter pilot, William Adama (Luke Pasqualino), finds himself assigned to one of the most powerful Battlestars in the Colonial fleet: the Galactica. Full of ambition and in pursuit of the intense action that the Cylon war promises, Adama quickly find himself at odds with Coker (Ben Cotton), the battle-weary officer to whom he reports. With 47 days left in his tour of duty, Coker desires an end to battle just as much as Adama craves the start of it. Though they clash at first, the two men forge an unlikely bond when a routine mission turns dangerous and becomes a pivotal one for the desperate fleet.

Joining Pasqualino and Cotton in the cast is Lili Bordan, who will play Dr. Beka Kelly, a Ph.D. who worked for Graystone Industries that created the Cylon robots. Currently assigned to a secret military mission, Beka and Adama quickly establish a rapport.
