A "Green Arrow" television series is being planned for The CW with Greg Berlanti, Marc Guggenheim and Andrew Kreisberg writing and executive producing, EW reports.

Dating all the way back to 1941 when he made his first appearance in "More Fun Comics" #73, Oliver Queen is a billionaire who leads a double life as expert archer and costumed hero Green Arrow. Over the years, Queen has been a member of the Justice League and even Mayor of his hometown, Star City.

Justin Hartley previously played a television version of the character on "Smallville", becoming a regular cast member in later seasons. It's not mentioned whether or not the new series will connect in any way, but it is noted that Hartley is not being sought to play the role at this time.

"Green Arrow" isn't the only DC superhero being planned for the small screen. Plans for a "Booster Gold" pilot were announced late last year with "Blue Beetle", "Deadman" and "Spectre" series still believed to be in various stages of development.

Of course, just because a network expresses an interest in a pilot doesn't mean that a series will see the light of day, as was the case with last year's proposed "Wonder Woman" series.

It doesn't have the same hurdles that Wonder Woman did so it should at least get on the air.

I think saying it should get on the air before a pilot's even been made is saying a little much. This could be good. I would appreciate a look at a more mature Green Arrow as opposed to the teenybopper superhero bullshit we've been getting for years.

If it retains its political bend, they could craft a character compelling enough to be worth watching.

There's a few things to consider, though. First, GA existed before he was made into a left-wing character. He wasn't exactly popular before then, but still, there is precedent for a non-politicized version of Oliver Queen.

Secondly, there's a danger in approaching Ollie from a "he must be left-wing" angle. In the comics, it's almost a gimmick. It's like it's a bullet point they put on his character sheet.

Superman: Flight, Super-Strength, X-Ray Vision, Invulnerability

Batman: Martial Arts Master, Gadgetry, A Fleet of Bat-Vehicles

Green Arrow: Master Archer, is Left-Wing

Too many people in the world choose their political alignment not based on their own personal beliefs, but because they're "choosing a side." You know them; the stupid teenagers that just follow the politics of their parents or friends and don't even know what it is they're protesting/voting for.

If Ollie is going to be liberal-minded, it should spring out of his beliefs in supporting the downtrodden and fighting against those who unjustly wield political and economic power, not because he's been labeled "left-wing." Too many GA comics approach it from the wrong angle, though, by starting with "he's a liberal" and applying the trademark liberal values to him in an unrealistic manner. Often times he comes off like a salesman, finding random ways of mentioning the various left-wing views (pro-choice, drive a hybrid, rich people suck dick, etc.) like he's listing off the features of a used car.

There's also the fact that this is a show directed at the CW's audience. Were this an NBC show, I could see a political angle working better, but the CW? They've crafted their lineup mostly around badass/hot/sexy/young characters doing badass/hot/sexy/young people things. Having politics in there isn't necessarily going to track with their target audience, and throwing politics in for the sake of having politics (because really, Dinah as a lawyer that hates the 1%?) brings the show dangerously close to getting preachy.

I'm all for Ollie being a liberal-minded character, I just don't want liberal talking points dropped in there for no reason.

Katie Cassidy ("Gossip Girl," "Melrose Place," "Supernatural") has landed the female lead role in The CW's Green Arrow pilot "Arrow," reports Deadline. She'll be joining Stephen Amell in the Warner Bros. TV project and is set to play Laurel, "a young legal clinic attorney who shares a romantic past with Oliver (In the comics, the character, Dinah “Laurel” Lance, has a superhero alter ego, Black Canary.)"

Susanna Thompson was also cast yesterday as Oliver's mother, Moira Queen.

The pilot is about a 27-year-old reformed bad boy, who after having spent five years shipwrecked on a tiny, brutally dangerous island in the South China Sea, returns to town a different man. Or to be more specific, a tortured, thoughtful master of the bow with a ferocious determination to make a difference.

David Nutter is directing the pilot, written/executive produced by Andrew Kreisberg, Greg Berlanti and Marc Guggenheim.

Arrow’s suit was designed by three-time Oscar®-winning costume designer Colleen Atwood.

Arrow pilot director/executive producer David Nutter said: "When I directed the pilot for 'Smallville,' I knew that making Clark Kent relatable would be the key to audiences believing in him as a hero. 'Arrow' is a different show -- darker and harder-edged -- but it's the same core idea. We're creating a real, believable world in which Oliver Queen can do incredible things. Colleen Atwood's great work on the Arrow costume reflects that effort."

Sounds better and better.
