Oh HELL yeah!

Smallville might've gone down the drain after a while, but the pilot was easily the best live-action superhero pilot ever done. Not that there's too many shows to compare it to, but still, it was excellent. If he's doing that but darker, it can only mean good things.

I wonder if it has anything to do with the success of The Avengers and the fan following another archer has gained because of it.

The CW's actually been doing pretty well with genre shows like Vampire Diaries and Supernatural. And since this is Eric Kripke doing it, it should be good. And with the CW the way it is, if a show is getting somewhat-okay ratings, that's enough to keep renewing it.

Two things: The brief narration we're given is lifeless, and the tennis ball sequence was dull. Instead of showing us the arrows striking the balls, they gave us the aftermath. Okay, whatever, they were trying to build towards a cool reveal, but to me it comes off like they were trying to save money by not using CGI or hiring an actual archer to pull off the trick.

I liked the tennis balls thing. Smallville did five years of Green Arrow slow-mo shooting CG arrows at CG things. He hit a bullet in mid-flight once. I'm good with more subtlety. If anything, this still had the same dramatic effect without being egregious with its CG. And there's little or no chance you could actually get a real archer to hit the balls like that.

Looks pretty darned good, barring the fact that if that "island" is where I think it is, he wouldn't have to be stranded there for 5 years when there's a First Nations community about 200 yards away, and about a one hour walk to an actual city. #NotReallyAnIsland

I had to watch this without sound but I didn't like the tennis ball thing. It's so implausible and it looks really cheap. I mean I know it's on a TV budget but that was just lazy. It almost seemed like a parody of Green Arrow.

Well, no super powers hasn't stopped 90% of the villians that have shown up in Batman films. It could work out, maybe. I mean Clock King is still fair game for the show.

Depends how you define superhero powers I guess. If it's TV martial arts or inhuman accuracy that's basically a superpower in my book, even if it's unacknowledged. I guess GA's rogues normally don't have much in the way of specific powers, Constantine Drakon and Slade are just superhuman level fighters. Count Vertigo could just be using tech, but I wonder if that sort of thing is disallowed too. I guess the only real superhuman regular villain is Brick, although GA has often fought curses and demons and the like. I mean, he has to face people who are scarier than him, otherwise it's boring.

I mean, I just don't think the CW has the storytelling of say, Christopher Nolan to the point where they can carry off this show without some superheroic flash to it.

Actually, now that I saw a version of the scene that was viewable in the UK I'm intrigued. There's a slightly hilarious level of man-porn but I like the look of the show overall. Plus I wasn't as bothered by the cheating in the tennis ball scene, they always use that sort of trick when bows or throwing knives are on TV. What was impressive was the speed of his notch and draw, it felt good to see that this show isn't going to be all smoke and mirrors when it comes to the fighting skills on display.

I don't see why Vertigo would be out, if he's using tech. Inducing vertigo in soldiers with technology is something the actual military had had some success with, in test runs.

It looks good to me. Green Arrow, done right, should be a really easy show to do. He has archery skills and some trick arrows and gadgets. I hope CW doesn't eff it up and go against such a simple story. Just make Ollie an uber liberal dude and don't stray too far from the basic idea of him.
