On the devkit you'll notice what looks like cameras on both sides which could be for the rumored stereo depth cameras

The announcement was today, and here is some of the highlights:

It does not have built in backwards compatibility for PS3 games. Instead, it will stream them from the cloud. That means you will have to have a fast internet(that leaves me out), and will most likely have to buy those games again to stream them.

The touchpad on the controller is just that. A touchpad like the back of the Vita.

The system will instantly turn on without booting up first.

It is not using the Cell. I guess that was a flop for Sony.

They are pushing social integration like crazy. Expect lots of apps for Twitter, Facebook, ect.

The UI looks to me like if Xbox 360 and Windows 8 Metro had a baby.

Games:

A Final Fantasy announcement will be made at E3.

They said a lot of the right things, feature wise. Specs seem a bit iffy and there's only one announced game I care about (The Witness), but they have time.

As someone completely outside of gaming, it this as big of deal as I think it is?

It matters less and less the further you go into the console cycle, but I’d be lying if I said it didn’t annoy me. I never bothered to get a PS3. It just wasn’t different enough from the 360 for me. But if the PS4 had decent backwards compatibility, it would be significantly more enticing, since it would give me a chance to go back and play the games I wanted to play from the PS3’s library.

But eh, what can I do?

Having to stream games from the cloud is what is really not going to fly, especially here in the states. With the number of Internet Providers that put caps on data, it's going to be a nightmare if you can't just download the blasted game. It's why when the PS3 goes down in price after launch day, I'm probably going to buy one.

Since this is merely a console announcement, I don't know that those complaints matter too much. If this were E3, where they're basically supposed to say, "here's everything in hardware, software, and ideas that we'll be giving you for the next 1-2 years," it'd be a bigger problem.

Me and Matt have already discussed chipping in on a PS4 together. It looks like they learned every lesson they could from their previous blunders and everything Microsoft has done wrong. Plus, I'm not a first person shooter guy but I am totally digging the feel of Destiny.

No one else will care, but I'm also very excited for the announcement of Rocksmith 2014 Edition. It's easily been my most played game of the past year and a half.

Sony really learned their lesson from last generation. It's like they've switched roles. Now Microsoft is the cocky industry leader overestimating what their consumer base will put up with.

I'm seeing a lot of absurdly loyal Microsoft fans hanging on the PS+ charge for online... even though Microsoft has been charging for online... and it costs more... and you get less from it.

I see the PS+ charge as an easy price to pay for everything else they're offering.

"Publishers can still use online passes." Well, of course they can.
