Falsified Findings in Seduction of the Innocent

Recommended Posts

That stuff all came up during the PMRC trials, shooting down the argument that heavy metal, like horror and crime comics, was responsible for the ills of society. Wonder why NY Times is getting to it now?

PMRC.

People tend to think that we're an overreactive culture now, but they are either ignorant of, or never lived through the witch-hunty 80s with the PMRC and the Satanic Panic.

Parents Music Resource Center, Tipper Gore's collection of alarmist housewives responsible for the "Parental Advisory - Explicit Lyrics" sticker that comes on CDs if someone swears or talks about sex.

As for the Wertham thing, I'm honestly surprised this is newsworthy in 2013. People have known for years that his work was sloppy at best and fictitious at worst. His mantra of "some kids are criminals, lots of kids read comics, ergo comics turn kids into criminals" was the worst type of "academic research" imaginable.

I believe in the "Eisner meets Miller" anthology Miller talks about reading "Seduction of the Innocent" and talking about how poorly written it is. When Frank Miller criticizes someones writing, you know its bad.

Ironically, Fredric Wertham is probably the only guy in comics history with more misdirected hostile sexuality than Frank Miller.
