Calm down, Des. My pick for 1981 is not that ringing an endorsement; I just haven't seen any better films from that year so far.

Empire, Ran, and Henry V are all in very close battle for best of the decade. Not incidentally, these films feature my all-time favorite screen villain, villainess, and hero, respectively.

1980- The Shining

1981- Raiders of the Lost Ark

1982- Blade Runner

1983- Return of the Jedi

1984- Amadeus

1985- The Breakfast Club

1986- Stand by Me

1987- Raising Arizona

1988- Akira

1989- The Little Mermaid

Favorite of the Decade is probably The Shining followed closely by Stand by Me and Raising Arizona. I don't love Raiders, Akira, or Little Mermaid, those years didn't have a lot of winners.

The 80s. I was dreading this decade because so many years are going to be so difficult.

I am dreading (sorry) the 70s because that is sadly one of my black spots of Cinema history. I'm good with the 60s and the 50s actually has two of my favorite movies of all time IN THE SAME YEAR but yeah, the 70s. So many years of, "Oh crap, I've only see weird movies starring William Shatner as a Cowboy and his native American Twin!"

Also, a google search tells Drunk Will that White Comanche was 1968.

I realised how crappy my 70's knowledge was years ago when I read Peter Biskind's Easy Riders Raging Bulls. Definitely gave me big chunk of extra stuff on my To Watch list, and brought me up to speed on what is probably the greatest artistic period in cinematic history. I'm far from seeing everything I should but my knowledge is so much better now.

Anyway, back to the 80's.

Best:

1980-Raging Bull

1981-Raiders of the Lost Ark

1982-Blade Runner

1983-King of Comedy

1984-Naussica of the Valley of the Wind

1985-Brazil

1986-Laputa: Castle in the Sky

1987-Robocop

1988- Die Hard (hon mention Grave of the Fireflies)

1989-The Little Mermaid

Favourite:

1980-Airplane

1981-Raiders of the Lost Ark

1982-Wrath of Khan (hon mention to First Blood)

1983- Local Hero

1984-The Terminator

1985-Back to the Future (hon mention to Rocky IV & Day of the Dead)

1986-Transformers: The Movie (hon mention Aliens)

1987-Predator

1988-Die Hard

1989-Back to the Future II (hon mention Licence to Kill)

Slightly hilarious even to me that I still rate Transformers over Aliens but man, that film still has the best soundtrack of any movie in the 80's, and that's a stacked category. Plus I can still quote the entire thing.
