It's definitely better than the first season. More consistently written and a tighter focus on the stories it wants to tell.

I have a huge problem with its tone and characterization however. Admittedly new interpretations of old characters can do whatever they want, but by this point it's pretty clear that this show has no idea how to tell stories other than by ways of intense violence. In episodes like "Knock Knock", the high stakes justified it completely. But there's been so much consistent strong violence in this series, that it's obvious they don't know how to tell their stories otherwise.

Like Riddler isn't an OCD lunatic obsessed with confounding people and showing off how smart he is. He's just a murderer, and he's fascinated by it. That's not the Riddler. It wouldn't be bad if he were unique to the program. But every bad guy is like that. Every bad guy in Gotham is a deranged torturer and killer to the point where there's no grounds to be surprised by any of it. Penguin regularly beat people to death in the last show. Tigress is obsessed with torture that she sees it as recreation. There was an entire fucking island devoted to body horror and experimentation in the last season, and in this one low-level gangsters can just happen to be cannibals at the same time. It's ridiculous.

Plus there's too little dimension to the characters. Bullock started off great but has devolved into Gordon's wise-cracking sidekick. His role in the show has been usurped by Leslie Thompkins. Selina Kyle's little more than a moody teenager who desperately wants people to think she's cooler than she really is. And Silver St. Cloud is a mustache twirling hench-wench for a wasted James Frain.

The best part about the show is the acting, but it kills me to see Ben McKenzie, Robin Lord Taylor, Donal Logue, Michale Chiklis and others spout off this insipid dialogue scene after scene. And this whole aspect with Gordon's "dark side", fuck off with that. We all know that won't go anywhere, so why trojan horse a bit of character development that won't lead to anywhere interesting?
