  1. While I’m tempted to say “it’s a Disney film, therefore there’s no sex in it (apart from the kind offscreen that produces children)”, I’m leaning towards sex workers yet not prostitutes — something more along the lines of strippers, erotic dancers, kiss-o-grams, or waitresses at Hooters.
  2. Quest, King, Superman, Return of the Joker, Terminator, and Back to the Future. Most of those are close calls though (at least for me).
  3. You’re right 😖 I remembered Ratcliffe shortly after our recording. Frollo also has major singing parts in The Bells of Notre-Dame and In Here/Out There, plus Hellfire.
  4. Enjoy! It’s our longest one yet but we had a blast.
  5. Great episode as always! Nightmare 2 is actually the only Elm Street I've seen much footage of. The shower scene with the coach was playing on in the background at a Halloween party I went to once. I wouldn't call Robert Englund -- who's about 5'10", if the internet is to be believed -- a "comically tiny person" though (I'm 6'7", so believe me, I'm in a position to judge).
  6. Beauty and the Beast (1991) vs. The Empire Strikes Back
  7. Close call. Both are messes but I think Spider-Man 3 is probably the better-executed (or less-botched) one, at least from acting- and special effects-wise.
  8. Rogue One. Both are uneven in places but Deadpool kinda peters out (at least from memory) and has Gina Carano in it.
  9. Here's the translation of The Little Mermaid I read in preparation for the episode, for anyone interested: https://andersen.sdu.dk/vaerk/hersholt/TheLittleMermaid_e.html
  10. I’ll second Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. Unfortunately, you’ll probably need to cover The Help for her earlier career/breakout role. For a pick between those two, either Fences or Widows. I’ve heard good things about The Woman King but also that it’s more of an ensemble than a Davis-central film (by her own request).
  11. The Little Mermaid (1989) vs. The Shape of Water
  12. No need. This episode was amazing and made me want to watch both movies! I also can’t wait to one day hear
  13. Jurassic Park, Singin’ in the Rain (though like you I find it indulgent and overrated, in spite of its good points), School of Rock (Les Mis c’est merde), and Batman Begins.
  14. Superman (due ultimately to its greater historical importance/influence), The Mask (because it's fun and Watchmen is a surface-level adaptation of a deeply nuanced story and doesn't understand a lot of what makes it special), GMD (because it's awesome and Spider-Man 2 is deeply sexist; I was driving towards that point in our FCF episode but didn't get to state it), and Men in Black (because it's fun and doesn't overstay its welcome; while X2 is still one of the better X-Men films, it's also tainted by its director. Plus, the second half a lot duller and less tight than the first half, perhaps because of the some of the behind-the-scenes drama). Still not seen Hellraiser or The Thing, so
  15. Love them both and am not even bothered by the Ewoks or the multiple endings (at least on the most recent viewings) but Return of the King. That said, there are two cut-related caveats: 1) A lot of the Lucas-mandated changes on the version of Jedi bieng streamed do hurt it to varying degrees. 2) I’ve only ever seen the barebones cut of Return of the King. I’m fine with the length of the theatrical cuts of the films, but I feel like the extended editions’ length would start to test my patience.
  16. The Great Mouse Detective vs. The Muppet Christmas Carol
  17. Prestige, Trousers, Phantasm (easily), and Spider-Verse. Haven't seen Eternal Sunshine or 30 Days, and haven't seen Pretty Woman or When Harry Met Sally for a nearly a decade -- for better or worse.
  18. Close call, but Hardy’s Bane, Hathaway’s Catwoman, and the very ending give Rises the edge for me. V for Vendetta and Alien.
  19. The Black Cauldron vs Pokémon: The First Movie
  20. Never seen a John Carpenter film. I'm tempted to say Superman for the influence but I think Spider-Man just edges it out (particularly when you put Willem Dafoe into the equation).
