  1. My mother walked in on me watching tv, and asked what I was watching. I explained I was watching Overlord and that it started the son of Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn. Without missing a beat, my mother pointed out the parents starred in Overboard now the son is starring in Overlord. Well played, mom, well played.

Oh, in Reign of the Supermen, Hillary Clinton is President and Lex Luthor is Donald Trump. "Make Metropolis Safe Again."

    OK then.

Reminds me of how British shoe bomber Richard Reid looked like Jack O Halloran's portrayal of Non.

The 7 faces of Dr. Lao - To enjoy this movie I had to remember how @Dan and @The Master handled the Talons of Weng Chiang, (Bigger on the Inside Episode 53) cringing at how different cultural sensitivities have changed but don't give it so much power that it ruins the rest of the movie. Ironically once you get over that I found that a lot of the antagonists (and even a couple of the protagonists) were racist, learned better in the end.

Some Mike style fan theories I came up with

Dr. Lao is a Time Lord - It is mentioned his circus is bigger on the inside and he is over 7,000 years old.

Dr. Lao taught the Genie from I Dream of Genie her magic- Barbara Eden plays the female lead.

The lead antagonist is real estate tycoon Clint Stark, possibly the true ancestry of Tony Stark, despite what Howard said in Agent Carter.

  3. The 5000 fingers of Dr.T   I first heard about this movie when David Gerrold listed it as one of his favorite movies. I also saw a preview on Svengoolie. When my library celebrated Dr. Seuss I decided it was time to give it a try.  I can see why this movie was critically panned. It's amazing!!! Far and away, the best live action Dr. Seuss movie. The subversive tone of the movie along with the prankster element of the main character is something I have only seen in Calvin and Hobbes comics. Svengoolie pointed out that the film has been heavily edited because Dr. Seuss had even more subversive and satirical elements that were too risque for its time.

how many mothers walked out of the theater in disgust with a display of such violence?

I love how the sets remind me of the Cabaret of Dr. Caligari, while at other times appear to be something that only a child could think of. I agree with other online reviewers that this movie had influence on the Simpsons. Which makes viewers wonder if that is the origin of the yellow hand hats. Anyone who had to practice a musical instrument will take a special enjoyment of this film.

  4. I recently treated my parents to see Aquaman, my mom thought it was that or watch more reruns of "Chuck." when the trailer for Shazam played my mother pointed out that she managed to watch some more Chuck.

  5. The Road to Jonestown Jim Jones and the Peoples Temple

    The Road to Jonestown

by Jeff Guinn. I first got interested in this book from seeing another book, Cult City By Daniel J. Flynn. Since the book had Jim Jones and Harvey Milk I wanted to look into the life of Jim Jones before any homophobes saw the cover and jumped to conclusions. I have not gotten to Cult City yet but learned a lot more about Jones and that some of my perceptions about him were wrong.

I learned he was a ardent socialist and many of his sermons had an atheistic message which included throwing bibles to the ground and calling it  a "paper idol."

One of his side jobs involved selling spider monkeys.

He wore his shades to hide the fact his eyes were bloodshot from his drug addiction.

He would preach that the president of the United States was racist and that the government was setting up a concentration camp for blacks.

His congregation would get into competition on how little sleep they got.

He tried to hijack another religion, the International Peace Mission Movement, by claiming that the soul of their preacher, Father Divine, had gone into his body.

There were at least two times where there were attempted assassinations on his life and both of those appear to have been staged.

His healing sessions were also staged, his unique one was having plants who claimed to have cancer hold the fake tumor which were actually rancid chicken giblets.

He claimed to be the only true heterosexual in the world but would have sex with the men as well as the women in the congregation. Apparently one of the women he slept with wouldn't give in to his pressures to have an abortion.

Towards the end, he would trick his congregation into thinking they would make a last stand and simulate suicide in exercises called "white nights."

Despite being socialist, Jones had a small fortune stashed away. Guinn even suggests he had a stash of gold buried somewhere that has never been found.

Aside from his views on homosexuality, I find it unnerving how he could easily exploit people in today's society. Beware, there are dangerous people  out there.

I'm sorry for your loss Will.

    I am sorry, as well.

Mighty Jack and the Goblin King (Ben Hatke) - A retelling of Jack and the Beanstalk. In this version Jack went to the Giant to rescue his kidnapped sister. He does not get a fortune from the giant nor is he the one that kills the giants (could have been the girl that followed him). The epilogue was just like a after credits stinger from an MCU movie.

  7. Dragonball Z : That time I got reincarnated as Yamcha - The credits list someone named "Dragongarow Lee" as the person that did the story and art but I am convinced the art was Akira Toriyama (or some very brilliant copycat). I like how the unnamed protagonist (U.P.) was in a universe that was drawn in a different art style than the DBZ universe. "Yamcha" cheats by anticipating future events in the story, giving him a power level of over 10,000, but never got into a relationship with Bulma and still loses her to Vegeta. The ending is a bit of a cop-out and you don't feel like the protagonist is any better off. However there is a moment where U.P. is in his universe and gets a moment of confidence when he thinks he has the strength of Yamcha.

  8. Paperbacks from Hell, Grady Hendrix: This was very similar to his blog Freaky Fridays where he would talk about strange paperbacks. I enjoyed the new things he brought, like the story about the book that won him over (which sounded a lot like the movie that was covered in Tranquil Tirades: 63). I especially like how the book is regularly segmented with sections showcasing artists and the wonderful artwork, that was often the best part of the paperback. I found his conclusion to what caused the bubble to burst to be believable.

Aquaman: really fucking fun. The fighting and action in this is just so next level. In Marvel movies, it's trying to manage TV-style fight choreography. In DC films, it's like Gods and Titans are clashing. There's no comparison. Momoa is great. Heard is fucking delightful. Really enjoyed Patrick Wilson, especially in the Ocean master armour. Black Manta was fucking cool to see in live action. I want a whole Queen Atlana movie because that whole sequence was amazing.

I agree. I enjoyed it immensely. Saw it twice already. I know I would not have enjoyed it as much as I did if @dc20willsave didn't share the story of the disaster that was the Chinese Avatar knockoff "Empires of the Deep."

I wonder if the production crew took some ideas from the trailer.

  10. I have been having frequent ocean dreams. One time I even stood on the beach and summoned a large wave. The trailers for Aquaman are infecting my subconscious.

    And I couldn't be happier.

    Final trailer:

I thought I saw Daryl Hannah in the trailer but I think it was just Nichole Kidman.

I showed this trailer to my sister and she loved the look of Jason Momoa
