  1. Happy Birthday El Pandarino, outlaw, vigilante, scourge of the bit of the a43 between Kettering and Brackley! Stand and deliver, lest he fling another impression at you that sounds a bit like Michael Caine but isn't actually supposed to be him! 50 silvers to the man who gives information leading to the capture of the elusive El Pandarino!

Edit- Can't believe I missed the obvious Pandy Highwayman joke.

  2. Comedy doesn't really have to be about anything, as long as it's funny.

Whilst I agree that it doesn't have to be I would say lot of the best comedy IS about something, there's an essential joke or dynamic or statement built into it. That's what makes it memorably funny. I guess I regard a lot of McFarlane's work as disposable. I was a huge pre-cancellation Family guy fan but going back it's not nearly the classic I thought it was at the time.

edit: to clarify my thoughts, theres nothing wrong with off the cuff agendaless comedy. That's MST3K in a nutshell. It's just that, if you make a science fiction show it needs to be making as larger point about science fiction beyond 'funny star trek door joke #6' or weird alien sex gags. Again, see Galaxy Quest or Red Dwarf. Red Dwarf is damn near profound at points.

  3. For those who don't follow me on social media, my aunt Debbi Morgan is going to be in the show for three episodes. She told me months ago (she initially auditioned for T'Challa's stepmother for Black Panther), and most of her scenes will be with Luke and/or Claire.

Oh wow, that's awesome! I'll keep an eye out for her.

  4. Iron fist was a good show. The early reviews were way off base. Not like it changed my life but it was one of the more consistently good shows, no outrageous highs but none of the lows the DD2 and Luke Cage fell into in the second half.

This looks good. I'm sufficiently hyped.

  5. Loving Vikings. Just good old fashioned Game of Thrones methadone with a slow but not ponderous pace dictated by seasonal raiding cycles. It's not really into its sexploitaton either, sex is there but doesn't feel like a focal point for the show. It's mostly just about culture clashes, responsibility and violence.

It's not a can't miss show but it does what it does well, and to a higher standard than I expected.

  6. Not a big fan of the Gump. It was a blind spot for years but after finally seeing it I didn't feel like I'd missed anything all those years.

Ditto. Honestly, it was always way too schmaltzy. It suffered from what I like to call The Grease Effect. It's when you take a source that was highly critical of the past, hand it to someone who then sands the rough edges of and now it's a loving look at a bygone age. It doesn't help that Forrest is infallible in the film which gives Tom Hanks little to work with as far as putting out a nuanced performance.

It's also a film where they're clearly way too impressed with the technology involved. Stuff that was a selling point in the 90s looks pretty bad now.
