Slothian, first of all: thanks for the comment. When I started this more than half a year ago I had hoped that it would stimulate discussion and though I haven't got there yet, the very fact that your reaction was this thought out makes me happy. Second of all: I hope my column didn't come through as a ringing recommendation of the new "torture porn" movement (a term I dislike quite a lot). I too don't necessarily dig the extended torture much. However, if used properly it can be most effective (ever seen Marathon Man? You need to). Rob Zombie, while purportedly a fan, just doesn't seem to get it. Like the awful industrial music act of the eighties, Throbbing Gristle, it's all about image and shock more than substance. I fucking loathe to think of Halloween. Zombie should stick to music videos. Period. Though I hate to say it, Hostel wasn't just a good horror film, it was a good overall movie. In essence it is a remake of Deliverance with a little hint of Death Wish thrown in. Eli Roth might be loathesome and mildly retarded but Hostel did what it purported to do. I, for one enjoy being creeped out. I hate a jump scene, I hate a cat popping out of a garbage can, I hate a long-haired pale Japanese chick. I find it a little sad that there is very little follow-through in Hollywood these days. The best the genre has to offer in the past few years is a spoof ("Shaun of the Dead") and a satire ("Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon"). While I may have come up with my next column in that sentence it's a little sad that the best the genre has to offer is the deconstruction of the genre itself. I love both of those films but it is still kind of sad. I agree with you on Hellraiser, as I believe I mentioned in the final installment of Moronic/Iconic, but without the demons these films are nothing more than another sexy girl being hung on a meathook. My point throughout is merely to show a reflection between the screen and reality. The Video Nasty movement of the eighties (to bring it home) was much more the problem of a fucking dictator in office who took free milk away from poor school children than it was the British public. Sorry, but I'd like to see Thatcher exhumed so she could be pissed on. But I digress. My thoughts on the genre are that I much prefer the mystery over the explicit vision. In fact, the first third of Jeepers Creepers is the best horror film ever made. The moment he showed up with the axe, it screwed everything up. I don't really have an ending for this rambling response. I've had a little too much wine and should probably go to bed. So, to conclude, thank you for reading and please: respond more. They should have called it "Contest of Champions" since everybody is vying for their positions. That way they can call them The Champions within the context of the book and have a differently titled book to deal with copyright issues a la Shazam/Captain Marvel. I'm going to skip this one and maybe come back for the trade. The Initiative stuff is already clouding my monthly pull list with a lot of Marvel. I need to pare down not keep picking new titles up.

I've made no secret that my ultimate dream-job would be to write a WW2 book that begins with Logan and a few of the European Invaders and continues on to Cap and Bucky joining when the US got involved. Supernazis and uncooperative Communists and a Kamikaze Super Squad from Japan...christ! I'd love to do that.

BKV should be sainted for Y the Last Man. Best comic serial of the decade as far as I'm concerned. Warren Ellis has long been a favourite of mine but he's best when left on his own: pulling the fat out of the fryer for Millar and Bendis (whom together could not write a monthly UFF book) was a great run on UFF. his newuniversal is the best new superhero comic I've read in ages. Nextwave was the best limited series of last year by far. As Planetary coms to a close in the next few months (ie: one issue left but with Cassaday doing AXM too it takes long) I'm awaiting the final chapter on what I think is the best slice of pop culture I may have ever seen. Matt Fraction is doing wonderful stuf on PWJ and I hear Casanova is good too. I should give that trade a try.

On the latest Joe Fridays on Newsarama, JQ mentioned in passing that he has been looking at TC Cap art. I listened to the Pod of Horror (a horror literature podcast) and David Morrell (writer of First Blood, the book the movie is based on) mentioned he's doing a Cap miniseries and he wasn't allowed to mention the artist. Ta-Da!!! David Morrell and Travis Charest on Captain America!

Doom Patrol? On the big screen???? I've been wanting that since before Morrison made them crazy! A TT movie could be cool but it could be so so bad too.

What I'd LOVE to see is Silver Surfer's first appearance in DC as a herald of Galactus. I'm writing it right now! Galactus is coming for New Genesis and Apokolips. What side is Silver Surfer on? It was a better story when he died at the end. It was also a better story when he killed all those rangers who were after him. Too bad the screenwriter didn't like Morrell's novel. Amen. Howard's End would have been sooooo much better.

Yeah, I don't know. I watch a lot of shitty movies (I'm a horror fan!) and do my best to find their good qualities. There's always some good (as I mentioned about SM3) but I've only walked out of a film in the theatre once and that was Deep Impact. I did so because my intelligence had never been so ridiculously insulted at the 30 minute mark. SM3 was close. I felt like I'd been slapped in the face. And I only paid $6.50! If I paid full theatre price I would have already mailed Raimi a stool sample. I think I enjoyed the first two films on a visual and script basis. Raimi has never been in my list of favourites, in fact he's quite low. Only Peter Jackson is lower. But the first two were vibrant and had stunning effects (neither of which had much to do with Raimi) and had great stories. They were Spiderman stories. 3 was a "Mask" movie dressed up as Spider-man. Script-wise, the only thing better about the third was the limiting of Aunt May. Thank God for that. I won't be going to see 4 if Raimi's involved. Maybe I'll catch it on cable.

Loved the advice for future homeless listeners! Hysterical. 7/10? Whoa! This one sits below Daredevil for me and only slightly higher than the Captain America movies. Good only for its "so bad it's good" value. Pretty visually but that is all it had to offer me. I really saw this as Raimi saying "fuck you" and showing why he is one of the world's most overrated directors. But I've talked about this at length...so I'll leave it at that.

I wouldn't say that. It was a scene snippet that looked competently made and basically gave you the gist of the story. I was impressed but not blown away. Crap is a little harsh :happy: I still don't think it'll make it past episode....let's say 8.
