Ha. I was thankful for that too. Keeps the peace at home, if you know what I mean....
A lot of the skin is being washed out by the strong highlights I put in because of my bright (at first) background. I'm going to be re-working the background, so the skin tone values may end up changing as well.

I did this to kill some time in between jobs. I had wanted to give sort of a parting gift to this book on my way out the door to another project, so when the artist told me that this piece wasn't going to be used, I figured I'd try to change the creator's mind. This was my first real experiment with secondary lightsources, so any help or advice would certainly be appreciated.
I had originally had a the light in the back much brighter, but it took away from the characters in the foreground, so I toned it down. Taking a second look at it though, I think I toned it down too much.

A bunch of us colorists have decided to get together to put together a tribute book for Mike Wieringo with the proceeds from the sale of the book going to a charity of Mike's family's choice.
This was the cover to Friendly Neighborhood Spiderman #13 originally colored by Paul Mounts. I'm hoping to find the time to finish a Fantastic Four Promo Poster that Mike did as well in the next few days. I'll post that when I get to it.

The first is a pic I colored as part of an open call for colorists in the Wildstorm Productions department of DC Comics. I'm not holding my breath, but I'd LOVE to get a response from them.

The second is the cover to the upcoming Mysterious Visions Anthology #7 from Dimestore Productions. The cover features a book I'm working on the side called Wannabez. It's about people that believe they've been given superpowers. Whether or not they actually have them remains to be seen, but it'll be a fun ride to find out.

Did a quick collaboration with Harold Edge on this pic while I was warming up for the second half of Fallen Justice #2.
After taking a day away from it, I can already see that the hair is too saturated and I need some stronger highlights on the gloves and boots. I'll have to get that fixed. What do you guys think though?

I found out about the 100 Artists Project late last week and even though I haven't picked up a pencil to draw anything of substance in over a decade, I decided to throw my hat in the ring. This is what I came up with. Feel free to tell me that it's complete crap.
For those of you interested in the project, information can be found here: 100 Artists Project Website There is a loose deadline to have things mailed by the 30th, so there isn't much time to get things in, but for those that may already have something to submit, it's definitely worth checking out.
Basically, they want 100 artists to submit a drawing that will be bound in a sketchbook and auctioned off. Proceeds will be donated to the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund and the Hero Initiative. All artists who submit a drawing will then be placed on a mailing list and a single sketchbook will be sent to each artist to do a drawing in, which will then also be auctioned. It's a great idea for a great cause, so if you can support it, please do so.

That Ross sure is a swell guy...
I'm sure I'll do another one some day. Unfortunately (or, thankfully, if you're looking at it from my bank accounts perspective), I'm hip deep in some other coloring work for the time being. In a month or two, I might be able to work something else up. Until then, if anyone has any questions or suggestions, please feel free to let me know.

I guess this is as good a place as any to introduce myself. My name is Ross Hughes. I'm a freelance digital colorist. Am I famous? No, not yet, but my wife keeps hoping.
I'm currently the colorist for a Small Press (for now) mini-series called Fallen Justice. It's written by Cary Kelly and Steven Forbes, and penciled by Harold Edge of Sixgun Samurai fame.
I haven't been fortunate enough to land a gig at one of the big two yet but a pin-up I worked on can be seen in back of Emissary #5 from Image Comics.
So here are a few pieces that I've colored either for those or just for fun.

Hey guys,
I'm the colorist on a project called Advent that is entered into this year's Small Press Idol contest over at Dimestore Productions website. The winner of the contest will have a four issue run published and printed through Dimestore. This is the second year that I've entered the contest. Last year, the team made it into the fourth (and final) round of the contest, but was forced to drop out when one of our team members couldn't participate any longer. This year the majority of the team is back together again, and we've all got something to prove.
We're into the second round, and we're asking for your vote to help us to get into Round 3. The first round is the one where we present our cover concept and story pitch, and Round 2 is character presentation. I've provided a link to our thread on the message boards here:

All you'll need to do to cast your vote in this round, and the next, will be to either log-in to the site, or sign up, and post the word "Yes" in our thread. You're welcome to post more and jump into the discussion, but only the word "Yes" will count as an actual vote for us, so posting "I think this should move on" won't count whereas "Yes, I think this should move on" would be perfectly fine.
Signing up for the site is easy, and more importantly, it's free. Unfortunately, you're only allowed to vote once, and they'll check IP addresses, so no ballot stuffing is allowed, but if you know of anyone that might be interested, feel free to pass this along to them and have them sign up to vote.

If you have any questions about anything feel free to let me know and I'll do what I can to answer them. There are 69 projects that made it through to Round 2 (twice as many as last year) so the competition will be pretty fierce. We'll need all the help we can get. =)
While I'm at it, I'll go ahead and post what was going to be our cover. We decided to scrap this one so that we can come up with something a little more impressive.

I haven't read it, but after reading your review, I figured I'd chime in on the slap. My wife and I have had very heated arguments (almost all her fault
) and she's told me several times that she just wanted to jump me several times when things got like that. It could be that that scene was just trying to depict both the passion and love that they have for each other. Anger is a powerful emotion, and a lot of women find it to be an aphrodisiac. That slap could have just been foreplay before some angry sex.
