The New Guy

The New Guy (1/8)

  1. You guys sort of touched on the answer--it's two fold and recently tested (and worked amazingly). Go to iTunes, put the comics on for $1.99, and when you subscribe you get it automatically--just like a subscription. Quit at any time or just buy one--and the graphics are stored on your computer forever (or until the terminator revolution when our computers become our masters). That, and comic stores have to become multi-purpose, like Des said of his local badmitton dude--like how most music stores added DVDs and became a multi-media store. Of course, all this would stop happening if Marvel would stop raising it's prices! The most interactive podcast ever--you guys made me want to go find a picket line somewhere for better comics at better prices!
  2. I read the Walking Dead will be covered--I strongly agree! I have never been this interested in comics since...ever. Honestly! On top of that, my local store only gets about 2/3 of the issues (even though it's on my pull list and I know several others'). Walking Dead Volume 1: Days Gone By. OK, I love Kirkman, but not so much for Marvel Zombies 2 and his "guidance" on Zombies 3. Invincible is slipping a little, I think. Still, I grew up in Kentucky (from 12-17) and Atlanta (from 1 1/2 to 11 and where my parents have a vacation home), so making things fairly local just ups TWD for me. That and I escaped Kentucky after college, and Kirkman lives in a semi-small town called Richmond, where I went to middle school (shudder). I'm not offended by any of his characterizations of the south--I've seen some pretty weird shit in my time, and the Zombie games in Woodbury wouldn't surprise me. OK, enough zombie gushing, pun intended. As a little different thread, maybe even reviewing one of the Essential or Showcase books? Not all of the titles in them, but maybe the first six issues in one Essential. It also gives an opportunity for those not on the boards to listen to what the Essentials and Showcases are, and the pros (cheap! and things you can find) and cons (newspaper, but still awesome for 24 or so issues for less than $20, and available almost everyone, including most bookstores). Plus, since they started these in 2000 (or 2001?) they keep going and expanding, plus now in the Essential X-Men they are adding some crossover comics, something we can't get on the CD ROM (which I also love). But it also gives you guys a chance to say where books are in a historical time line and whether they are considered good, top of the game, or just plain awful at the time, compared to later or earlier runs (both Mike's and Dan's opinion plus a general feeling from the comics community). One more suggestion (and first of all, not criticizing the selections so far--they are great! I just doubt you could get to review all the TPBs you ever wanted even if it were once a day--which would be exhausting even without a job): Maybe 100 Bullets Volume 1: First Shot, Last Call? I know it's Vertigo, but not Brian Wood (who I agree sounds like a complete ass from all the interviews and Mike's and Jenny's tapings), so maybe??? Sorry, I've just been reading all of the current trades for 100 Bullets in the last two days (1-7 so far and 8 hopefully tonight, then finish 9-12 tomorrow). It's the only TPB that I have started taking notes on for a good reason (instead of just trying to figure out a horrible story line)--just picking up hints of the family names and the Minutemen nicknames that I can match up. I think this is certainly my 3rd and probably my 4th time around (every time a new TPB gets released I reread the story since the tone changes in the past and you can see hints dropped when new reveals occur). So, after my spiel, I guess I'm interested in order: 100 Bullets Volume 1: First Shot, Last Call (so Mike and Dan don't have to try and reread the whole back history) Walking Dead (I would have it first, but others have spoken in favor of that, and you mentioned you a probably going to cover it later) Any type of Essential or Showcase, even part of one--Say Wolverine Essential #1--just to get a chance to talk about another way to read TPBs from the 60s-90s for a casual fan to get into without spending too much money (even though there's no color--another reason to buy back-issues if the story interests you so much). Thanks so much guys and keep it up!!! You have a wide, appreciative audience, from both Waiting for the Trades, Is it Tuesday Yet?, and other fun Earth-2 reviews with Mike and Jenny and Ian and Des and Dan and everyone else--not even including the awesome spin-offs (WFP led me into Earth-2.net in the first place). I guess my point is, with all the programs and spin-offs, I'm actually more interested in the shows than most new comic releases! Thanks! Derek
  3. I think the Old Man Logan thread from Wolverine was the only good book this week. I had a couple of questions during the main part of the story, and then they were answered in the end. Spoiler: Ultimate X-Men--Yoda's right, I just don't care about them anymore. Ultimate Spider-Man is the only interesting one in the group anymore. I hope the reboot does something to the ultimate universe. Ultimatum is just stupid. For instance-- I've cut down now to only one monthly--and occasional others, but the only comic I get interested in monthly anymore is Walking Dead. I'm rereading 100 Bullets, but taking it slowly, which is pretty awesome (on volume 12). If I can just avoid spoilers on issue #100 until the last trade comes out--
  4. Another great show, (not so) old chaps! I actually got to watch The Daleks from Netflix immediately before the show and it fell perfectly. One question: when you come to a show with missing episodes that you plan to cover, for example Marco Polo, can you tell use what media form you will be reviewing it in? That is, the old audiotape recordings that still exist or the special feature that comes with the Edge of Destruction disc (in the current Dr. Who DVD collection on amazon)--where audio is compressed with surviving stills (kind of like those old records Mike plays where you turn the page after a beep)? If you mention it on the show before or in the threads, that helps me keep up watching (I can pick up the recording or whatever form before the next podcast) so I don't lose track and can follow along nicely. I am trying to get an e-mail out before the next fortnightly show that has some intriguing follow-ups to show two. In that regard, when either of you have time (if possible [not a mean request, since you are providing all this wonderful content on your own time while we listen for free]) to do a quick episode list and for those missing episodes, say at the most the Hartnell and Troughton years, what alternative media form you will probably use, so we can follow along. Until then, pip pip...(I feel I must talk the Kings (or Queens) english after watching so many Doctor Who episodes keeping up with the podcast, even though I have a perfected yuppie accent with a twist of Minnesotan). Also, going to an American school originally chartered, named appropriately after British royalty, and created by the British before the American Revolution, I feel I must return to my fake British colonial roots. After all, Margaret Thatcher spoke at our commencement almost 11 1/2 years ago now  Of course, her totalitarian opinions nearly made me perform reverse paristalsis. For those who can name this school you will receive a no-prize but the utmost respect of someone who graduated from and owes a very large manure load of money to that college. You may also win that student loan if you are not careful! Thanks! Derek
  5. Thanks! I had forgotten the original theme, but I now remember the 5th doctor theme was a tribute to it (in one of the approximately google books I have being moved out of storage). Wow, I knew (emphasis on knew) everything about the Doctor when I was eight years old. I guess I'll be going through several Doctor-induced (non-drug) flashbacks for the next ten years.
  6. Amazing episode guys! The opening theme is awesome...is it the theme from the 5th Doctor (Davison)? I downloaded a bunch of Doctor Who themes on ITunes, but could not find the exact theme. Is there a place you can direct me to in order to download it? I get that special tingly sensation when I hear that version of the theme...not THAT type of tingly sensation...oh well...let's just say it makes me feel about 10 years old again...ah crap, let's just say I like it and leave it at that.
  7. Huh, I bought it but never read it. Thanks for reminding me, I'll do that today. Let you know what I think later on. Awesome! Thanks!
  8. Has anyone read the mini-series "Whiteout"? I know there's a movie coming out, but I was looking for the TPB a couple of years ago and couldn't find it. Now with the movie, it's in a new printing, apparently. I like the premise, but has anyone actually read it and what was your opinion?
  9. Hmmm....two episodes of "Old Lady Love Machine" did beat my series "MILF super heroes"--it only had the pilot episode, which was never picked up. Both of those are still better than Stan Lee's "So you want to be a superhero?" Maybe my new idea, "Superheroes who give you blue balls" will finally find success--it's just 30 minutes of Olivia D'Abo doing voice work...still I would pay damn well to see that.
  10. OK, there was one New BTAS episode where Clayface was poorly animated. That little mini-episode in Holiday Knights with Batgirl. I agree with Mike and James--that was a horrible episode, particularly one to relaunch the series on. The Clayface/Batgirl scene really was poorly animated. So there's the answer to James and Mike's question.
  11. Has anyone tried the new Marvel digital comic archive service? I'd like to, but I'm weary...I want to know more about it! Yes, it definitely sucks that I have Ghost Rider on DVD-ROM (sorry GR fans) but no Daredevil. I want my Frank Miller on my ginormous computer screen! :grumble:
  12. I had not looked at any spoilers or rumors...damn that was powerful! I did not see the end coming. As I started reading it, I thought, oh look, the Marvel Heroes have saved the Earth again with some special device (the negative zone portal). Then I saw the drool..."what the hell was that" I thought--maybe an inside joke? Then I got it--Kitty's the sweetest X-Man ever (ignoring her first year in the New Mutants, when she was a first class whiner). We hadn't seen her in continuity in years, then we get her for Astonishing X-Men, Peter's alive, all is good. Then she fuses with the rocket/large a** bullet?! I never even thought about that with her phasing powers. I almost always hate to see dead or other characters sent into the void to come back (e.g. Jean Grey--worst excuse ever for a comeback!). Hawkeye may be the one exception (I think the longer Captain America is dead [no Skrull changing-crap please], the more powerful his character will become) since it was such a short time, but from Bucky Barnes to Professor X (faking his death about 50 times and counting), they should stay dead. Except for Kitty. Particularly (even though they are in different universes) since Ultimate Kitty just saved Spider-Man's neck (literally). Bring her back now!!!
  13. I just received the CD/DVD collections of Civil War and House of M. I can't wait to read them and give a review if people want one! Not spoilers, per say, since this events have already occurred, but the idea of combining them into one group per event. Similar to when Marvel put out the Age of Apocalypse collections on TPB form about 2 years ago. About 8 years ago, I spent lots of time and effort trying to collect all of the Age of Apocalypse stories. The collections in the TPBs were amazing, except for there was now Legion tie-in series in the collection (which started the whole thing). Slightly misleading, but still a great read. I wo nall the of the other GIT Marvel collections, and like Michael, wish they would start with DC comics soon beyond the Mad magazine (question: how many Spiro Agnew and David Hasselhof jokes can in read in Mad before becoming literally mad (insane)? Great experiment--I just might try it!!! Derek
  14. Invincible + Walking Dead = Perfection. If you want a universe or two that is not complex in terms of numbers of characters, but complex in terms of characters themselves. Robert Kirkman does pretty well in Marvel also (Marvel Zombies  ), but nothing beats these two. I got back into comics after about 10 years, but as soon as I found these, I was hooked.
