The New Guy

The New Guy (1/8)

  1. If I have to choose from the selections, I would go with A Fist Full of Dollars. However, my suggestion for a good entry into Westerns would be High Plains Drifter. While it is more of a Weird Western than a traditional one, it has a bit of a ghost story element. I don't know about your wife, but my wife loves ghost stories which makes for a more palatable experience.
  2. Thanks for pointing episode out. I'll check it out. I've been picking up occasional issues of Batman: The Brave and the Bold and The Incredibles for my son since he got hooked through the animated versions.
  3. Many thanks on your review of Mouse Guard. I do like that you guys take the time to review some all ages fare like Mouse Guard and Bone. I think that comics are a great way to build literacy in kids. As a kid I loved reading Uncle Scrooge and Super Goof, so I was excited to see that Boom! starting publishing those comics at a more reasonable price point than the previous publisher since I know my son is not the type to bag his comics and keep them backed with acid free cardboard.
  4. I quit reading superhero comics in the 90's when the Spider-clone stuff was going on. I drifted into the humor indie stuff of Dan Clowes and Evan Dorkin for a while, but their releases were much more sporadic and eventually drifted off comics altogether in my early 20's. I still enjoyed the DCAU stuff on TV for the time being. I got back into comics now that I have a son who is crazy about Batman, after watching episodes of The Batman on Boomerang. My wife and I started picking up the full season DVDs I started dipping my toe back into the comic waters when I found that I could check out trades at my local library. I also have a job where I can listen to my ipod all day, but I got sick of music. I got into podcasts. It was then got into listening to World's Finest Podcast, Earth-2.net the Show, Funnybook Babylon, and IGN Comic Smash. I have taken my son to the local shop near my house a couple of times to pick up Batman: The Brave and the Bold and Uncle Scrooge for him and GL/GLC stuff for myself. He's still at the stage where I have to watch him like a hawk in the store, so I tend to stick with using the hold system on my library web page to quickly select book and pick them up.
  5. I really like how Brave and the Bold satisfies the long term fans and is accessible to the kids. One thing I am really curious about.
  6. I just watched Chill of the Night and I thought it was amazing. The climax of the story just gave me a chill down my spine (no pun intended). On an unrelated note: I know that WFP's mission is to cover the traditional DCAU, but I would like to hear reviews of The Batman and Batman: Brave and the Bold. While these shows are not part of the DCAU continuity, it almost seems like there is a meta-textual continuity between the DCAU shows, The Batman, and Batman: The Brave and the Bold where they follow a thread of Bruce Wayne's life from his early career in The Batman to the mainstream DCAU shows followed by Brave and the Bold and finally capping off with Batman Beyond. The details of the villains and supporting characters change, but it seems that Batman remains essentially the same character throughout the various shows. Does anyone else feel this way about the post-Superfriends DC shows?
  7. I think either Mouse Guard: Fall 1152 or Mouse Guard: Winter 1152 would make a good previously released pick for WFtT.
  8. Just checked out Chronic City by Jonathan Lethem from the library. I liked his other work and I hear it is a return to sci-fi. Now only if the kids will let me get a chance to focus on the book before it is due.
