slothian
We're in a fight. A Gene Kelly-based fight. The worst kind of fight. Watch The Band Wagon and tell me if you still think those parts are that bad as musicals go. Oh, I think Singin' in the Rain is very mugh at the high end of the scale of film musicals. I just have a bit of a blind spot to them, insofar that I have never sat through one that didn't have at least one duff song or irritatingly showy performance. Even the South Park movie has that song sung by Saddam Hussein - awesome sentence, lousy song.
dc20willsave
Pandy or Tom, we would appreciate one of you stepping in to redeem Great Britain after Ian just made the entire country seem like uncultured fussbudgets. But seriously, Singin' in the Rain is the gold standard against which an entire genre can be compared. There are few films in the genre of musical that even compare. Maybe just West Side Story, Chicago, The Wizard of Oz, or Cabaret come close. Speed is a movie with Keanu Reeves that isn't even in the top 10 action films of the 90s, let alone all time. I never called it a bad movie. seriously, Singin' in the Rain is the gold standard against which an entire genre can be compared. There are few films in the genre of musical that even compare. 3. I said as much - it's at the highest end of the genre scale.Speed is a movie with Keanu Reeves that isn't even in the top 10 action films of the 90s, let alone all time. 4. I also never said anywhere that I thought Speed was a better movie. I simply threw out one of the options that Flickchart offered when I was re-ranking the film. Mental note: choose safer options to avoid the outrage of musical lovers.
dc20willsave
It's all good. Slandering musicals is to us gays as going into a church and yelling Hail Satan is the most Christians.
JasonC
There is no comparison, and only one choice that can be made. Speed. Obviously.
Molly
Speed isn't even Keanu's best movie! No amount of Dennis Hopper can make Speed better than Gene Kelly.
JasonC
Musicals are boring.
Koete
"Boring" is too easy a word to toss around.
dc20willsave
I mean, maybe some of the Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals are a little trite but that's more a symptom of the time. If you don't like musicals, okay but don't condemn the entire genre as boring. I don't like most westerns but I'll still agree that they have artistic merit and I still like (and in some cases, love) many of the films in the genre. slothian
Yeah, I wouldn't go so far as to make a blanket statement about an entire film genre like that. There are parts of musicals I absolutely love, but I've yet to come across one that maintains a consistent level of awesomeness from start to finish. And it's fair to say that there's a great many I've yet to see. I'll be damned if Grease is one of those in the upper echelons though. Fuck that noise.... Pan-dub
I hate Grease. Fuck that noise.
dc20willsave
Grease works to some extent. It's one of my less favorite musicals but that's mainly since it's a textbook example of missing the point (the stage musical was written as a satire of 50s nostalgia). But I know I'm in the minority and son of the songs aren't that bad.
You Know Who
There are three musicals I hate as much (if not more) than the Wilsons hate Grease, but mentioning two of them would be trolling Will. On a related note, The Nightmare Before Christmas vs. The Wizard of Oz.
dc20willsave
Wizard of Oz. The Nightmare Before Christmas is gorgeous but The Wizard of Oz is timeless. Also, troll away. I might actually agree.

Dan
Nightmare is excellent, but yeah, it's Wizard of Oz.
You Know Who
Also, troll away. I might actually agree. O, you won't. The third is Annie.
dc20willsave
Annie is sickeningly wretched. I mean, Carol Brunette is great in it and keep it from being completely terrible but every moment is drenched in saccharine. The version from Wonderful World of Disney in the late 90s was better. JasonC
Wizard of Oz. And yes, I know its a musical. But its still better than Nightmare before Christmas.
slothian
Chalk up another one for Wizard of Oz. Good call on Annie, Christian.
slothian
Toy Story vs The Lion King
dc20willsave
Toy Story. It changed the entire industry and has a pretty decent story to boot with a good voice cast. I will admit, I'm not a fan of The Lion King but it does have a leg-up for music. Hans Zimmer, Tim Rice, and Elton John will always be a bit ahead of Randy Newman. You Know Who
Tough call, but Toy Story. Funnier and more influential.
Koete
Today's an "I fucking love Jeremy Irons" day, so I'm going to say Lion King.
