ESCAPE FROM TOMORROW-upcoming show. Crazyness.

JUSTICE LEAGUE: WAR-More or less, I agree with what's already been said. Having read the comic, though, I have to say the movie is better. The dialogue is very spot on for the most part, but GL is far funnier out loud than read. The idea to include Shazam and not Aquaman was an interesting one. It's fine because he's likely the most inconsequential of the team members in the book anyway. The New 52 at least has an interesting take on Shazam (as they have seemed to do away with Captain Marvel entirely) even though he seems slightly redundant with Superman around. Flash is hardly in this, and so is Wonder Woman. It's very uneven, but still fun. The boys liked it because they say "hell" "damn" and even "shit" at one point. They are also fans of Darkseid, who they have taken to calling "Black Thing"...as in Ben Grimm.

GLOW: The Story of the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling-I expected to be entertained, but I did not expect to have a tear in my eye at the end. I think that I might have enjoyed GLOW more than WWF as a little kid partially because it really was a cartoon. This show came around right when I was beginning to understand that women were pretty much worth being interested in. Now, I have to say that there are a crazy amount of these GLOW women who are at least 50 and rocking it. Not only did I enjoy the movie, but I have a dozen entries for the next "A Man's Game" thread.

RoboCop (2014): Dear, José Padilha. How dare you make an entertaining, socially relevant, thought-provoking, heart-filled remake of RoboCop! You were supposed to be crap; a PG-13 piece of garbage for teens. Not smart, well-acted, and worthwhile!

Pump Up the Volume: This has just been added to my "watch at least once a year" pile.

Evita: I've seen the film more than a couple of times but it's been a few years. I enjoyed it a lot more than I remember. There are plenty of times that it feels a little bloated and has too much substance to anything resembling content. Still, Madonna is the star here and this is what of the few films where she is just a terrific actor in it. It's always beautiful and the songs are much more catchy than you would thing.

The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe (2005): A good enough adaptation. It does feel a little too much like they were trying to jump on the Harry Potter/Lord of the Rings band wagon but it's still a fun movie. But, in the long run, Tilda Swinton as The White Witch steals the entire movie. She is the highlight of the entire film.

The Lone Ranger: I stand by what I said last summer. Brainless, overlong, but with its charms.

The Punisher (1987): I haven't seen this in ages, and it's better than I remember. It's not great by a long shot, but wow does it get the character and tone correct. You could never do the Punisher as anything other than a direct-to-video B-movie, and I don't know why anyone would try.

Coriolanus: Technically a broadcast of a play, but it counts for the purposes of this thread. This production was honestly amazing, even without Hiddleston in the title role. Great use of the stage, and how they use it to evoke various settings. The supporting actors and actresses are all amazing, and it's always amazing to be able to understand the Shakespeare, especially when it's delivered clearly and competently. Hiddleston himself brings this absolutely insane level of intensity to the role, and I honestly recommend this to anyone who wants to see his range beyond Loki.

More catchup to come.

That is easily the best Punisher movie, and that isn't meant as a backhanded compliment; I mean it. You cannot be a post-Garth Ennis Punisher fan and rag on that movie, because so much of what he did was there.

The Wolverine - Just finished this and I have an overwhelming feeling of nothing. It was just moving images on my screen. Parts really dragged and the climax was just a cluster. It wasn't a bad film by any means, but not something I will watch again.

The Replacements - Keanu. And they really didn't get anything about football right. Also Keanu.

12 Short films from the National Film Board of Canada-Megan is putting on a French language film festival at her school and we were guinea pigs. Most of these are ponderous at best. I understand that these are the films the NFB is promoting as Canadiana and that my tax dollars go to other films, but man, most of the animation on the animated films look like they were done by a high schooler. Yikes. Tough to find some stuff to play for people. Some good ones though.

Catfish: Another film I heard the hype on and never got around to seeing. From the fucking get-go my bullshit meter was through the roof. Then they go and meet their "correspondent" and the reality comes crushing in. I truly believe that these guys knew exactly what was going on with this "relationship" and concocted a plan to get themselves infamy by exploiting a poor sad woman with a horrible life. I don't think that she is fake or her family...her real family...but I think those guys knew from the beginning. They found out. Researched like crazy and then decided to film it as if it were a neat little doc about the relationship between the bigshot New York photographer and the precocious "little girl" who happens to be pretty amazing at turning his photographs into paintings.

Yip. They were also able to rangle a TV series from it.

Rebel Without a Cause (1955) directed by Nicholas Ray

What an experience, this was absolutely brilliant. Wonderfully written, beautifully shot, and powerfully acted, this is just as compelling today as I'm sure it was 60 years ago. It really has aged marvellously well. Every character is intricately layered and thought-out. James Dean is truly magnificent and I was very surprised to find that this was his only performance he was not nominated for an Oscar for. In short I loved it, easily one of my favorite films.

So, I'm working my way through the Star Trek films as I have four days off and I've never seen them before, save the reboots. I've seen a fair amount of TNG and Voyager, but very little TOS. I'm up to Search for Spock, and I have a nagging question:

So, did V'Ger create the Borg or what?

The whole probe/Illia thing just feels like a finished product of the Borg beta process.

I've enjoyed the films, thus far. I just finished 3, and am in the opening seconds of 4 as we speak. Thus far, I can see Wrath of Khan is easily the best made film, but the overall vibe of Search for Spock (i.e. Kirk and his merry band of Outlaws) is my personal favorite. Bones is an incredible character, too.

EDIT: Also when was Kirstie Alley that hot?

I actually saw II, IV, and VI over the weekend and agree with Dan. II's a bit overrated, but I liked it better this time around (it was only non-Abrams one I had seen before). Initially, I had planned to go through the original six, but couldn't get more than 35 minutes into I because of all the starship porn.

The Motion Picture is by far my favorite Star Trek film.

Like everyone else has said, II is really great and IV is hilarious. V is atrocious, but it is actually worth listening to the commentary track just to get an idea about how incompetent of a filmmaker Shatner is. As far as the other two go, I can't remember a thing about them.
