They try to science it up, but it was magic. While I'm okay with it this one time, I truly hope Discovery doesn't use the spores like TOS and TNG used the transporters as magical Get Out of Jail Free cards. They even baked in an in-continuity reason for the USS Discovery, spore drive, Section 31, and even Michael to never be spoken of in the TOS / TNG eras of Star Trek.
