E3 2006: What's This? Super Paper Mario!

The best surprise for GameCube this year is an all-new 2D Mario.

May 9, 2006 - The DS's New Super Mario Bros was a welcome return to form for Mario. Even though his 3D adventures have been genre-defining, many still think of Mario as a two-dimensional fellow. Thankfully, Nintendo hasn't stopped there. A brand new entry in the Paper Mario franchise has been announced, with standard 2D platforming gameplay with Paper Mario 2D style (and a little bit of RPG elements for good measure, for those who still want some Super Mario RPG in their Paper Mario.)

Super Paper Mario (cute title, by the way) plays like a standard Paper Mario platformer, complete with block hopping, turtle stomping, and Bowser bopping. There's even a very cool callback to the DS game in that Mario can zoom to super sizes -- except while in the DS game, he grows into an incredibly well-rendered character, here they make Mario into a screen-filling, overly-pixilated 8-bit character! Speaking of DS games, since Princess Peach just revealed her platformer skills with Super Princess Peach, the princess naturally is now a playable character here on Cube (she's even armed with her parasol, just like on DS.) And for a third playable character? The infamous Bowser is playable -- yes, playable Bowser!

This single-player adventure is set up to mimic the 2D look of the Paper Mario franchise, but there are also 3D elements in the game, including deep-rendered 3D worlds behind your platformer and some dimensional activity as Mario explores the stages (somewhat like Super Mario 3, from what we can tell.) A few RPG elements are also promised, although we're not sure whether that just refers to the length of the quest or if there are in-depth character customization features of any kind. There are eight levels all told in the game, full of tricks and traps and puzzles and prizes -- and we're also told that elements will be drawn right in front of you to challenge Mario and friends even more.

Super Mario and the Legend of the Seven Stars was one of my favorite games back in the day, and still is today. I love the Mario RPG's, so keep the paper mario's coming on the systems and the mario and luigi games coming on the handhelds.

With Square putting games out on the GBA, I was hoping Nintendo would get them to do a sequel to Super Mario RPG.
