Davedevil
Hidden ContentWhich would make him the second non-Jedi we ever see wield a lightsaber in the movies. But you never know. I was such a mess by the time Luke finally appeared onscreen. Not a line of dialogue, nothing beyond standing there and removing his hood. JasonC
Hidden ContentSpeaking of being the Force sensitive one. How exactly is it that someone who up until that point had no idea that she was even remotely approaching being force sensitive, manage to:a) Block another, considerably more experienced force user - even if it was Emo Vaderb) mind-manipulate a stormtrooper - something we've only seen Obi-Wan doc) manage to use a lightsaber well enough - or indeed at all - to beat Emo Vader. And I don't buy the excuse that he was bleeding out from Chewie's bow shooter. She'd never even seen one before finding it in the chest. For that matter, how the hell did Fin manage to use a lightsaber, when it was pretty much established very early on that he can only use a blaster? Missy
I would say:A. Even though Kylo Ren is clearly very powerful and has been trained in the ways of The Force, Rey might be even more powerful despite her lack of training.B. See A. Plus, it took her three tries.C. This, however, had me head-scratching, too. Yeah, she tapped into The Force via quick, mid-battle meditation, but something has to be going on there. Otherwise that's a problem. As for Finn: Since we saw that one Stormtrooper not only defend himself against a lightsaber, but also deftly use a saber-like weapon, swordwork might be part of the new Stormtrooper conditioning / training. Delete
I think the thing that made me happiest about this movie is that it was actually funny.
Donomark
I liked Kylo-Ren. He was such a different villain and has his own story arc going. This is flat out the best acted Star Wars movie. There's really no arguing that in my opinion. Davedevil
In addition to the great acting, I predict this being a Greatest Hits compilation of the Star Wars movies would make this much more rewatchable for some. Not that the original trilogy isn't endlessly entertaining, but this has everything in a nice little package. I mean, I could do with more of Mark Hamill, but hey we can't win all the time. S-T
Hidden ContentThat does make sense. If Finn actually was Force sensitive, Snoke would have sensed it and pushed him up the ladder. He probably would have been the apprentice instead of Emo Ren.
S-T
Maybe a spoiler, maybe not, but I'll hide it anyway:I don't think it's a plot hole that someone who isn't Force sensitive can use a lightsaber. People have been using swords in real life all through human history, and one would think that would be the case in Star Wars also. They just wouldn't be nearly as proficient with it as a Jedi or Sith. Heck, I could use a lightsaber if they existed.
Donomark
Didn't Han use a Lightsaber in Empire?
S-T
Yes, Donomark, he did.
JackFetch
I don't think using a lightsaber if you aren't force sensitive is an issue. A lightsaber is just a tool. The issue is that two people that have never used one before all the sudden became proficient with it enough to hold off someone trained with it. I've never seen the force work that way. Dan
Yeah, that was my issue. Luke was hugely powerful in the Force, and he was hopeless with the lightsaber in the first movie, barely managed to not die in Empire after having received some training, and only really could be called proficient in Jedi. Rey just instinctively knows how to pick up a saber for the first time and fight with it because she's strong in the Force? Admittedly, Kylo Ren hasn't finished his own training and is bleeding from being gutshot, but I questioned it.
Delete
Again I think that's the point of setting up how powerful the bowcaster is through the movie and then having Chewie shoot Ren after he kills Han. Ren is in no shape to be doing anything let alone fighting to the death at that point.
Molly
Also, Rey is very proficient in combat. She may have never used a lightsaber before, but she does know how to fight well.
JackFetch
R2D2's story arc has been explained by the writers, including why he woke up when he did, and where he got that map in the first place. http://www.ign.com/articles/2015/12/20/r2-d2s-arc-in-star-wars-the-force-awakens-explained?utm_campaign=fbposts&utm_source=facebook
Rjoyadet
I think the thing that made me happiest about this movie is that it was actually funny. The humor caught me off guard but it was a most welcome change. I am glad there was not something funny immediately after a sad moment. Missy
I loved Poe's "Do I talk first or you talk first? I talk first?" moment. I wasn't expecting that from an interrogation scene within Star Wars.
Davedevil
Poe in general was a delight. Bit underused in this, sadly. And that fakeout death in the beginning felt like a Marvel Studios move.

JackFetch
I think we are going to get a lot of payoffs in future movies. They've set of the world, and left some mysteries for later. I think that's why I have some questions about certain things that happened. They will be explained later.

Gareth
Honestly, after a second viewing I've become even less forgiving of the film. I don't really feel compelled to criticize it here though.

Donomark
^Batten down the hatches!Criticism on Fin's character has (inevitably) began sprouting up online. While some I can definitely see may make him problematiclike the fact that he doesn't have a name and is given oneothers I feel is knee-jerk, lazy criticism born from an honest need to not have any problematic black leads in films. It's simultaneously understandable and frustrating.
