What are you reading?

I'm currently picking up The Physics of Superheroes chapter by chapter but I wanted to mention that Bill Bryson's autobiography "Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid" is fucking brilliantly funny and I"m only one chapter in.

I also just finished Stephen King's "Cell" and it's got to be the best thing he's written in over a decade. He went downhill after Needful Things with very few moments that come up for air but this book was great. Probably has something to do with the fact that it's only 350 pages (1/3 the regular page count).

What are YOU reading?

As mentioned on the last episode of The Show, I'm almost done with Trouble Is My Business by Raymond Chandler. Not the best collection of short stories / novellas I've ever read (some of the endings are clichéd), but I forgive any bumps in the road because these stories are from early in his career (before he became a novelist).

The plan is to read Casino Royal by Ian Fleming next, which I started once before but put down for some reason.

I am reading Darkly Dreaming Dexter by Jeff Lindsay and when I get a chance the new John Connolly book

After watching the first episode of Dexter, I picked this novel up from the library. Liked what I read, but didn't have the time to finish it (which is the story of my life when it comes to books).

Just finished the fifth hardback collection of Superman/Batman, "Enemies Among Us". I really enjoyed it because I thought it was a great look at just how far Batman and Supes will go to save the world and each other. The final page is just awesome.

I just finished "Promise of the Witch-King" and "Road of the Patriarch," both by R.A Salvatore. I love Salvatore. It's the literary equivalent of an action movie. His battle descriptions are wonderful. I don't know how I felt about the end of the Sellsword trilogy, because I liked Entreri. Hopefully there's some more interaction with Drizzt for him in the future.

Currently reading Robert Graves' "I, Claudius." It started out slow but is picking up. But I love Ancient Rome, so my tolerance for long-windedness here is exceedingly high.

After seeing it name-dropped (sort of) in The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, I started reading Hyperion by Dan Simmons. It's fantastic and has pulled me into its world as well as any book I've read in a long time.

Once I'm finished with that, I'll be reading Lolita for The Modern Reader's Paradigm over on the Oratory. I've also got Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House waiting to be read.

Both are brilliant! If you like Dan Simmons, try "Carrion Comfort" which has to be the best vampire novel ever written next to I Am Legend.

  • 1 year later...

Bringing this thread back to life since I was about to make a new one and found this one.

I read through all of the Percy Jackson and the Olympians books, and just ordered Just Another Judgment Day which is book 9 in the Nightside series by Simon R. Green. Also reading Warcraft Archive which is the first 4 books set in the Warcraft universe.

I've already read 2 books this year, which I'm quietly proud of, hehehe. 3 weeks off work will do that though :)

Good to Great: Why some companies make the leap and some don't - Jim Collins

Moneyball: The art of winning an unfair game - Michael Lewis

Both books appeal to my interest of the contrarian approach to things. I have never really been in to baseball, but Moneyball I finished in about 9hrs of reading over 3 days.
