Marvel Universe mmo

If you got excited all over again by the recent announcement that Marvel is giving another shot at a Marvel Universe MMO game, then allow this bit of news to temper your zeal: According to Simon Philips, Marvel's president of worldwide consumer products, the game won't see release until all the way into 2012.

For some perspective, that means we won't be playing Marvel's MMO until after we've all had a chance to watch Iron Man 2 (2010), Spider-Man 4 (2011), and the new film adaptations of Captain America (also 2011) and The Avengers (2012). The idea is for the Marvel Universe MMO to follow The Avengers film that year.

"It sounds like a long way away, but it's not," Philips said to MTV Multiplayer (via Joystiq). "We've got to create, together with [game publisher] Gazillion, that environment that is going to be a totally immersive experience and a perpetual storytelling experience as well." Philips also explained that they're still deciding on which characters will make appearances, and what the overall setting will be. "We're looking at lots of different scenarios...We're still working on the different variations that are potentially possible," he said.

Also note that this new MMO has nothing to do with the canceled MMO Marvel was making in conjunction with Microsoft a few years back. "Every day, every week, and every month, there is a new element of technology that comes about," Phillips said. "So whatever plans we had for an MMO two years ago have now evolved to embrace that new technology."

They really do sound like they have some big master plan of the movies leading into each other leading into this game don't they? What's next, TV shows? How about comics? Nah it'll never work.
