RSS
The seventh season of the classic era comes to a close with the reality-hopping "Inferno," as does Liz Shaw's tenure as The Doctor's companion. Also, Mike has a wacky theory about Time Lords. jakob1978
Another great podcast. Have to say, this is one of those stories where my opinion differs from most of fandom. I find this such a dull story, I really don't like it at all. The Parallel earth scenes aren't too bad, but mostly i find it such a snoozefest. I agree that the primords were totally superflous. Unfortunatly it's a bit of a curse that sometimes they feel that there has to be a monster in Doctor Who, and shove one in unnecceseraly (see also the Slyther in Daleks Invasion of Earth, the Taran Wood Beast in Androids of Tara, and the Magma Beast in Caves of Androzani to name a few). It'll be interesting to hear you views on the next season, the show changes again from this militaristic format set in lots of research centres, to a lot more colourful cartoony action series (Terror of the Autons in particular with it's overreliance on CSO (blue screen) is a bit of a shock to the system). Dan
Yeah, the dictum that 'there must always be a monster in the story' has led to more than one mistake. The Magma Beast in "Caves of Androzani" is a prime example; it adds virtually nothing and brings moments of total goofy silliness in an otherwise gritty adult story. I can understand why some people wouldn't like "Inferno"; it could have been shorter, and the Primord monsters are totally unnecessary (which is interesting, as the story was originally about the Primords and the parallel Earth stuff was the filler added to bring it up to seven episodes). It's just so much fun to see the eyepatch wearin', EEEEEEEEEEEVIL Brigadier.
dc20willsave
I really want to listen to this episode now but Netflix was stupid and didn't send me Inferno yet. Blast.
Stavros
"I'm not sure Time Lords can't fly." How did the 4th doctor die from falling? Maybe they learn to fly as they get older. That's why Tennant can survive big falls and Tom Baker couldn't, he's closer to achieving flight.
Dan
Don't encourage him.
illogicology
I love Inferno, just to be a pain in the ass though, the parallel universe plot element being added later is a myth. It was there in Houghton's original outline; the monsters on the other hand weren't. Otherwise, awesome episode as always.
Dan
I was going by what producer Barry Letts said in his autobiography. It's always possible he misremembered.
Stavros
Don't encourage him. No, I think we're onto something here. Maybe Time Lords gain the ability to fly in last couple of lives. The recent new Who promo at least demonstrates that Matt Smith has a greater degree of aerial dexterity than his human companion. Tennant jumped off a moving spacecraft through a window to the floor and survived with very little damage. James Bond jumped off a cliff to catch a plane in Goldeneye. The evidence is mounting. illogicology
I was going by what producer Barry Letts said in his autobiography. It's always possible he misremembered. If it's in Lett's biography then I'm probably way off. (and heartily apologise for over-zealous correction if I am) I know it's an often repeated fact that then I read in something (I want to say Doctor Who Magazine) was a myth, since they found Houghton's outline but I think DWM is more likely to be mistaken than Letts. No, I'd be more likely to believe DWM. They have people who do an immense amount of research into the documents and paperwork that was around at the time. It's unsurprising that people involved in the show talk about 20, 30 or 40 years ago, occasionally misremember things.
illogicology
I was totally wrong about DWM, I remembered reading it on the BBC website and tracked down the link: http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/classic/episodeguide/inferno/detail.shtml edit: it's in a section handily labelled "myths"
