The Incredible Hulk is muscling his way to primetime TV. ABC is in very early stages of development of a live-action series adaptation of the popular Marvel comic book character. There is no writer on board yet with search underway. Marvel, which was acquired by ABC parent Disney last year for $4 billion, started a major push in TV in June with the launch of Marvel Television whose goal was to adapt Marvel characters and stories to the small screen. Marvel TV head Jeph Loeb and his team quickly zeroed in on The Hulk, with rumors of a potential Hulk live-action series first surfacing in mid-summer.

They're both pretty bad.

Hulk works great as a TV show, it's just that the effects for the Hulk himself will probably be insanely expensive and not-so-cool.

Wonder Woman might be worse, though, if only because putting her on TV means that a movie is less likely, and the character needs a movie. (The Hulk's already had two in the last seven years)

The recently announced "Incredible Hulk" television series has found potential showrunners in the form of Guillermo del Toro and David Eick, reports Deadline.

Del Toro and Eick are said to be in negotiations for the series, to be produced between ABC Studios and Marvel TV. According to the article, it will feature a Dr. Bruce Banner in his 20's and will mix CGI with practical effects to depict the Hulk on-screen.

Del Toro and Eick are expected to work together on the story with Eick drafting the script and del Toro potentially attached to direct the pilot as well as develop the look of the Hulk himself. Though no specific timeline has been confirmed, Deadline suspects a fall 2012 premiere.

Del Toro is best known for his career as directing with projects like Hellboy and Pan's Labyrinth while Eick has acted as Executive Producer on the rebooted "Battlestar Galactica" and its subsequent spinoffs.

"We turned in the outline to ABC about four weeks ago,” filmmaker Guillermo del Torro, who's developing the series with David Eick, tells FEARnet. “And then we did a rewrite for ABC on the outline, and now we are lining up the pages."

Asked by FEARnet whether this Hulk will be different from what we've seen before, del Torro replied, "I think so. Or we wouldn't be trying it. Actually, one of the points of this project early on with Marvel, was 'We're going to do this thing different, and here's how. Are you interested?' And they were."

With Marvel's The Avengers already having earned over $1 billion at theaters worldwide, ABC Entertainment President Paul Lee said today in a conference call (via the New York Daily News) that they are still hoping to bring The Hulk back to the small screen as well.

Lee mentioned that ABC is working to have the show ready for the 2013-2014 season. “We had hoped it would be ready this year, but that didn’t happen," said Lee. The project is being developed by Guillermo del Toro and David Eick for ABC Studios and Marvel TV.

He added that the show could air on ABC or another network. "Wherever it would work best," said Lee.

Regarding "AKA Jessica Jones," which was also in development at ABC Studios, Lee said it hasn't been picked up but is not dead yet. "Other projects are more toward the front of the queue now." "Twilight" franchise screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg was adapting the comic.

There was no mention of "Cloak and Dagger," the third property that ABC was eyeing as a series.

There is no way they can do this cheap enough to be good on tv.

Hulk is just a bad property for TV. Yeah, it worked in the seventies, but that was a different kind of Hulk than what we have now. The Hulk works best in smaller doses, and a show focused on him can't do that. You want an ABC/Marvel show filled with sci fi and smashing? Why not something like a Marvel teamup style thing with The Thing?

If Steven Spielberg can't keep enough ratings to keep a sci fi show on the air, nothing can.

Spielberg has his hands in a thousand different things, many of which don't to that well. I didn't even realize he was connected to Terra Nova until you just mentioned it.

I think they can do a Hulk TV series fine; they just need to make it basically like the old TV show but replace Ferrigno with a CG Hulk.
